# Accountant for *Maple Ridge* manufacturers

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have many small manufacturers and fabricators, whose numbers differ from a service firm’s. EverStone serves [incorporated trades and production businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant) as a [Maple Ridge small business CPA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-maple-ridge), online.

**Quick answer:** A production business carries two things a service business does not: inventory that has to be valued at year-end, and work in progress that sits between raw material and a finished sale. Both change taxable income directly. For Maple Ridge businesses, EverStone handles inventory and WIP alongside the T2, equipment schedules and GST, at a fixed fee agreed up front. Published fees start at $325 a month for bookkeeping and $125 for a personal return.

For a one-owner Maple Ridge manufacturer, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements usually cost from $500 to $700 a month all-in.

## Inventory is a tax number, not just a stock number

Year-end inventory directly affects profit, because cost of goods sold comes from opening stock, purchases and closing stock. Value closing inventory too high and you overstate profit; too low and you understate it, which attracts attention. For a fabricator holding steel, components and finished units, the count and valuation basis matter as much as sales. Our [inventory accounting guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/inventory-accounting-bc) sets out the approaches.

### Work in progress: the part that is neither

Production businesses always hold part-finished value — material issued, labour applied, nothing sold. It belongs on the balance sheet, not expensed as incurred. Expensing everything understates assets and distorts the year, especially when a large job straddles year-end. A consistent WIP basis is high-value first-year work and makes every later year easier to close.

## Equipment, and the machine you eventually replace

Machinery, tooling and fit-out are recovered through **[capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#cca)** at class rates. The half-year rule halves the first claim; the **Accelerated Investment Incentive** suspends it for eligible property, allowing a larger first-year deduction.

Shops often miss the sale. Proceeds are compared with the [undepreciated capital cost](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#ucc) in the class, and excess depreciation returns to income as **recapture** — fully taxable in the year of sale, trade-ins included.

## Costing a job properly, before you quote it

Here the accounting and commercial questions are one. If material, labour and overhead are not attributed to jobs consistently, your product-line margin is a guess, and quoting off a guess makes a busy year thin. Getting costing right serves the return and pricing at once.

## Sales tax on what you make and what you buy

Manufacturing inputs, machinery and finished goods are treated differently under BC’s [provincial sales tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#pst), and some production inputs differ from general purchases. With GST on both sides, a shop can pay tax it need not and miss tax it should collect. It is routine, but worth setting up correctly once.

## Selling to larger customers

Supplying a larger customer changes a production business more than the order suggests. Terms stretch, purchase orders and paperwork arrive, and the customer may want financial statements first.

For most owner-managed shops the answer is a **compilation engagement** under CSRS 4200: statements with a compilation engagement report and a note on the basis of accounting. It is not an audit or a review, and the report says so; it provides no assurance. If a customer requires assurance, that is a different engagement, and we will say so plainly.

Cash matters too. Longer terms mean financing production longer, so a growing order book can squeeze cash just as the tax on a strong year arrives. Plan for it in advance.

## What EverStone handles for you

One CPA, one fixed fee agreed up front:

- T2 corporate return and year-end financial statements
- Inventory valuation basis set and applied consistently
- Work in progress established and carried properly
- Equipment CCA schedules, disposals and recapture
- GST and PST treatment on inputs and output
- Job costing structured so margins are real numbers
- Salary-versus-dividend planning each year

## Fixed fees, fully online

Every engagement runs online by video, phone and secure upload, so nobody leaves the shop. The fee is fixed first, so a call before a machine purchase costs nothing extra. See [what it costs](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

The items that decide an equipment-heavy year-end — for a business operating in Maple Ridge, British Columbia

| Item | Why it matters |

| Capital assets | Large purchases are depreciated over time rather than deducted at once |

| Work in progress | Unfinished work is an asset until it is delivered |

| Inventory and materials | Costing method drives the reported margin |

| Financing and leases | A lease and a purchase produce different deductions for the same machine |

Common questions

## Maple Ridge accounting for small manufacturers and fabricators FAQ

**Why does my inventory count change my tax bill?**

Cost of goods sold comes from opening inventory, purchases and closing inventory. A higher closing figure raises profit; a lower one cuts it. So the count and a consistent valuation basis matter as much as sales. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Do I have to carry work in progress?**

Part-finished production at year-end generally belongs on the balance sheet, not fully expensed. Expensing everything understates assets and distorts profit, especially when a large job crosses year-end. Set a consistent basis once.

**I sold an old machine and my tax went up. Why?**

Recapture. Proceeds are compared with the undepreciated capital cost of the class; depreciation beyond the actual loss in value is fully taxable income in the year of sale. A trade-in counts too.

**Do you work with shops across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows?**

Yes — small manufacturers, fabricators and production businesses throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, including Albion and the industrial areas, and across the Fraser Valley. Everything runs online, which suits a business where the people who know the numbers are usually on the floor.

**What costs belong in my finished goods, and what stays as an expense?**

Direct materials, direct labour and manufacturing overhead belong in inventory; selling, administrative and financing costs do not. That line changes reported margin and taxable income, because costs absorbed into inventory are deferred until goods sell. Set the method once and apply it consistently.

**Can my Maple Ridge shop deduct product development work?**

Some development work qualifies for scientific research and experimental development incentives, giving a Canadian-controlled private corporation refundable credits. The bar is technological uncertainty, not market novelty. Keep records as the work happens.

**How is machinery written off for a manufacturer?**

Through capital cost allowance, in manufacturing and processing classes. An asset must be available for use to be claimed, so uncommissioned equipment at year-end may not qualify. Confirm the in-service date first.
