# Payroll services in *Abbotsford*

Abbotsford employs the most seasonal farm labour in the Fraser Valley, and a payroll that triples in July behaves differently. EverStone runs [source deductions](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll/remitting-source-deductions.html), ROEs and T4s for [Abbotsford businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-abbotsford) remotely, for a fee agreed first.

**Quick answer:** Abbotsford employers withhold income tax, CPP and EI on every pay run and remit them to the CRA on an assigned schedule. British Columbia adds two provincial layers: [employer health tax](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/employer-health-tax) once BC remuneration passes the exemption, and [WorkSafeBC](https://www.worksafebc.com/en/insurance/need-coverage) premiums assessed on payroll by classification unit. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month.

Updated September 2026 .

Ten intense weeks count the same as twelve steady months.

## The two provincial charges a BC employer pays on top of CPP and EI

Federal payroll is the part every Canadian employer shares: income tax, Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance withheld from each cheque, plus the employer’s own CPP and EI contributions, remitted to the CRA together.

BC adds two obligations run by bodies other than the CRA. **Employer health tax** is self-assessed: $1,000,000 or less of BC remuneration in a calendar year is exempt; from $1,000,000.01 to $1,500,000 it is 5.85% of the excess over $1,000,000; above $1,500,000, 1.95% of the total with no exemption. **WorkSafeBC** premiums are set by classification unit on assessable payroll. See the [BC tax facts reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts).

## Why a seasonal Abbotsford payroll reaches the employer health tax line quietly

Berry farms, greenhouses, packers and processors run uneven payrolls: six staff can become seventy in July and August. Employer health tax measures *total BC remuneration for the calendar year*, not headcount, so ten harvest weeks count like twelve steady months. Employers who never felt large learn in spring they cleared the exemption — the notch band applies, and registration was due in the first year tax was owed.

Structure is the second trap. Associated employers share one exemption: a farming, packing and holding company all paying wages, common in the Valley, combine remuneration. Our [BC employer health tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-employer-health-tax-guide) guide covers the notch rate and associated-employer rules. Forecast the calendar-year wage bill in April, not March.

## Records of employment, and the week when a whole season ends at once

A crew that arrives together leaves together, producing a burst of ROEs, each with pay-period history, insurable hours and a reason code, each feeding an EI claim. Errors return as Service Canada requests months later, mid-planning for next season.

T4 slips and the T4 Summary are due by the last day of February, and a hundred short-service records take long to reconcile. See the [payroll year-end checklist](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/payroll-year-end-checklist-canada).

## What the payroll engagement covers

One CPA, one written scope, agreed before anything starts:

- Opening and maintaining your CRA payroll (RP) program account
- Every pay run calculated — income tax, CPP and EI, employee and employer sides
- Source deductions remitted on the schedule the CRA has assigned you
- Employer health tax registration, instalments and the annual BC return where the exemption is exceeded
- WorkSafeBC reporting of assessable payroll
- Records of employment issued as staff finish, including end-of-season batches
- T4 and T4A slips and summaries filed by the February deadline

## Remote, and honest about it

EverStone is a sole practitioner CPA firm working remotely by video, e-signature and secure exchange, since growers mid-harvest are busy. One accountant handles the file all year. The [payroll deduction calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-deduction-calculator) shows deductions and employer costs on any gross pay.

What a lender or a shareholder actually reads is [year-end statements in Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statements-abbotsford).

The year end this all feeds into is [corporate tax in Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-abbotsford).

A harvest payroll swings cash harder than any other bill, so its remittances belong on [a thirteen-week cash forecast](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cash-flow-management).

## Who this is for, and who it is not

Built for Abbotsford farms, trades and clinics with small core staff, with or without a summer crew: timely remittances, a balanced [PD7A](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/pd7a) and matching T4s. Unionized shift workforces need software we do not run. Otherwise, [a price](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fee-estimate) comes first.

## What happens when you get in touch

Three steps, whether you have four staff or forty pickers.

- **A half-hour call, no charge.** Your headcount through the year, pay basis, and where your RP account stands today.

- **Due dates set up front.** The remitter type fixes each deadline, so they are diarized before July, not after a [missed remittance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/payroll-remittances-canada-rp-account).

- **Season, then slips.** Each run remitted on time, ROEs issued as the crew leaves, and T4s filed before February closes.

Common questions

## Statutory holiday pay

BC Day falls in the middle of an Abbotsford harvest. Each qualifying picker is owed an average day’s pay, and anyone who worked the holiday earns a premium as well. Our [BC stat pay calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-stat-holiday-pay-calculator) works out both, and the [qualifying rules](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/statutory-holiday-pay-canada-employers) are set out separately.

In Abbotsford, EverStone also works with [dental practices](https://www.everstonecpa.com/dental-accountant-abbotsford) and [farms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/farm-accountant-abbotsford).

## Abbotsford payroll questions

**Does a seasonal Abbotsford farm crew count toward employer health tax?**

Yes. The tax is assessed on total BC remuneration paid in the calendar year, not headcount or duration. Ten weeks of harvest wages count the same as twelve months of salary, so a seasonal employer can cross the exemption without feeling large. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**We run a farm company and a separate packing company. Do we get two exemptions?**

No. Associated employers share one employer health tax exemption based on combined BC remuneration. Splitting wages across two related companies does not create a second exemption, and assuming it does is an expensive mistake for a Fraser Valley business.

**When do the records of employment for a finished season have to be issued?**

Each record of employment follows one person's interruption of earnings, so a crew finishing together creates one batch due at once. Accurate payroll records by pay period decide how fast it is produced.

**Do you handle WorkSafeBC as well as the CRA remittances?**

Yes. WorkSafeBC is outside the tax system, with its own registration, classification and assessable payroll reporting, but uses the same wage data. Report it from your remittance records to keep both consistent.

**Do I need to visit an office?**

No. The practice is deliberately built to run online — video calls, e-signature and secure file exchange — and no part of a payroll engagement requires you to come in, whether the operation is in Abbotsford or anywhere else.

**Can payroll start partway through a year?**

Yes, often, since seasonal businesses rarely switch in January. We reconcile prior remittances, accumulated CPP and EI, and recorded benefits before the first run, so T4s cover the full year.

**What does payroll cost for an Abbotsford business?**

The fee is the same in Abbotsford as anywhere else EverStone works. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month; a payroll-only engagement is quoted by headcount and pay frequency, in writing, after we review your enquiry. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Abbotsford itself?**

Yes. Employers in Clearbrook, Matsqui, Sumas Prairie and Bradner are set up the same way as those in Abbotsford: payroll runs remotely, remittances are scheduled, and the fee does not change with the address.
