# Payroll services in *Airdrie*

Alberta charges no provincial payroll tax, which makes an Airdrie payroll structurally simpler than the same one in Ontario or BC. What it does not simplify is general holiday pay, WCB-Alberta reporting, or the records of employment a seasonal crew produces every autumn. EverStone runs payroll for [Airdrie businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-airdrie) remotely.

**Quick answer:** An Airdrie employer’s statutory payroll costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums — Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks before the holiday. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Payroll for Airdrie employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filings included.

## Who is on an Airdrie payroll

The City of Airdrie names construction, health care and social assistance, transportation and warehousing, and professional and technical services among the strengths of its workforce, and the city’s manufacturers employ production staff alongside them. Each of those groups brings a different payroll shape. Trades and landscaping crews grow in spring and shrink in late autumn. Warehouses and carriers run shifts, overtime and drivers paid by the load or the kilometre. Clinics and day programs carry part-time staff on irregular hours. Professional practices have a small salaried team and an owner deciding between salary and dividends. A payroll engagement that treats all of them the same produces wrong numbers in predictable places.

## What Alberta does not charge

Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax of the kind other provinces impose. For an Airdrie employer, the statutory cost of employing someone is CPP and EI on both the employee and employer side, plus workers’ compensation premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill. That is worth knowing when deciding whether to hire in Alberta or in a neighbouring province, and it simplifies the monthly accrual: there is no provincial payroll liability to provide for alongside the CRA remittance. The figures are tabled on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## Source deductions and the remittance schedule

Income tax, CPP and EI are withheld from every pay and remitted to the CRA on the schedule assigned to your payroll account — for most small employers, monthly, with larger employers remitting more often. Late or short remittances attract penalties that are steep relative to the amounts involved, and a director can be personally liable for unremitted source deductions. We run each pay on Alberta tax tables, remit on your schedule and reconcile the payroll account to the ledger every month, so the T4 summary in February is a formality. The [remittance calendar](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-remittance-calendar) sets out the remitter types.

## General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula

Alberta recognizes nine general holidays, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately preceding the holiday. The base is not wages alone: it includes vacation pay and earlier holiday pay, so a holiday that falls soon after another is calculated on a slightly larger base. This is a different mechanism from the average-day’s-pay or divide-by-twenty approaches used elsewhere, and it is one of the places a national payroll template produces the wrong number. Optional holidays should be a written policy, not a decision made the week the day arrives.

## Seasonal crews and records of employment

When a construction or landscaping season ends, a batch of employees is laid off at once, and each needs a record of employment showing insurable hours and earnings by pay period. Employers who keep clean pay-period records produce them in an afternoon. Employers who do not spend a week reconstructing them while also managing the layoff. The same discipline matters when crews come back in spring: start dates, rates and TD1 forms collected before the first pay, not after. Bonuses and retroactive increases have their own withholding method, and vacation pay should be accrued as a liability rather than discovered when someone leaves. See [vacation pay rules for employers](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/vacation-pay-rules-canada-employers).

## Shifts, overtime and drivers

Warehouse and logistics employers along the corridor often run shifts, and shift work brings overtime, shift premiums and irregular hours that a salaried template handles badly. Drivers may be paid by the hour, by the load or by distance, sometimes in combination, and the pay basis has to be clear in the payroll records so that vacation pay, holiday pay and insurable earnings come out right. Manufacturers add production bonuses and piece rates. Each of these is manageable when it is set up once, properly, as its own earning type, and painful when it is entered as a lump sum each pay.

## Switching mid-year

Payroll can move to us at any point in the year. We take the year-to-date figures for each employee from the previous provider or spreadsheet, so CPP and EI maximums and the year-end T4 are calculated correctly on the full year. The first pay run is checked line by line against the last one you ran, so employees see no change except, where needed, a correction.

## WCB-Alberta

Workers’ compensation is administered by WCB-Alberta, with premiums set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings. Registration and reporting are separate from your CRA accounts, on a different schedule, but they draw on the same wage data. An Airdrie contractor that hires subtrades also needs to check their coverage before final payment; see [trades accounting in Airdrie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trades-accountant-airdrie).

## Paying the owner

In an owner-managed corporation, the owner is often the largest line on the payroll, or deliberately not on it at all. Salary creates RRSP room and CPP entitlement and is deductible to the corporation; dividends avoid remittances. That choice is made before the year starts, not at filing time. See [personal tax in Airdrie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-airdrie).
