# Payroll services in *Fort Saskatchewan*

Alberta charges no provincial payroll tax, which keeps a Fort Saskatchewan payroll structurally simple. What it does not simplify is a workforce that grows for a plant shutdown and shrinks afterwards, Alberta’s own general holiday formula, and WCB-Alberta reporting on top of the CRA. EverStone runs payroll for [Fort Saskatchewan businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-fort-saskatchewan) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax, so a Fort Saskatchewan employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. For a Fort Saskatchewan employer, payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Payroll for Fort Saskatchewan employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filing included.

## What Alberta does not charge

Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax. For a Fort Saskatchewan employer, the statutory cost of employing someone is CPP and EI, on both the employee and employer sides, plus workers’ compensation premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill, so there is no second payroll return and no monthly provincial liability to accrue.

That matters most to a contractor or fabricator deciding whether to add staff, or one already running crews in more than one province. A payroll template built for an employer elsewhere may include a provincial levy that does not apply here, and one built in Alberta will miss the levy when the same crew is moved to a job in a province that has one. The provincial position is tabled with its source on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## Shutdown crews and records of employment

The city’s economic development office lists industrial support services, fabrication and maintenance among the sectors it targets, and the businesses in that work tend to staff up for large plant maintenance programs and release people when the work ends. Each contraction produces a batch of **records of employment**, with insurable hours and earnings reported by pay period. Employers with clean pay-period records produce them quickly. Employers without them spend days reconstructing hours while also managing the layoff itself, and a late or wrong ROE delays the former employee’s EI claim.

Short, intense work periods also bring overtime, shift premiums, travel and living allowances and bonuses at the end of a job. Each has its own treatment: some allowances are taxable and pensionable, some are not, and a lump-sum bonus has its own withholding method rather than following the ordinary periodic tables. Getting those right on the pay run is much cheaper than correcting T4 slips after year end.

## General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula

Alberta recognizes **nine general holidays**, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least **4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately preceding the general holiday**. The base is not simply wages: it includes vacation pay and prior general holiday pay, so a holiday falling shortly after another one is calculated on a slightly larger base.

This is a different mechanism from the formulas used in other provinces, and it is one of the places a national payroll template quietly produces the wrong number. An employer with rotating shifts, long stretches on and off, or a crew that changes size every month has to compute it rather than approximate it. The optional holidays should be a written policy, decided in advance, not a choice made the week the day falls.

## WCB-Alberta and subcontracted labour

Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by **WCB-Alberta**, with premiums set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings. Registration and reporting are separate from your CRA payroll account entirely; the reporting draws on the same wage data but goes to a different body on a different schedule.

The related question is who is actually an employee. Contractors around industrial sites often use a mix of their own staff and individual subcontractors. Classification turns on the substance of the arrangement — control, tools, financial risk and the ability to send a replacement — rather than the label in the contract. Getting it wrong means back source deductions, penalties and interest assessed against the payer, and potentially WCB-Alberta premiums on top. It is worth settling before the first cheque, not after a review.

## Remittances on the CRA’s schedule

Income tax, CPP and EI withheld from each pay, plus the employer’s share, are remitted to the CRA on the schedule assigned to your payroll account, and that schedule depends on your average monthly withholding. A business whose payroll jumps for a busy season can move to a more frequent remitter category, and a missed or late remittance attracts penalties even when the total is eventually paid. [Payroll remittances and the RP account](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/payroll-remittances-canada-rp-account) covers the categories.

## What the engagement covers

- Pay runs with Alberta tax tables applied to Alberta employees
- Income tax, CPP and EI withheld and remitted on your assigned CRA schedule
- Overtime, allowances and end-of-job bonuses treated correctly at source
- General holiday pay calculated on the Alberta 4.2% basis, including optional-holiday policy
- Vacation pay accrued and tracked as a liability
- WCB-Alberta registration support and assessable earnings reporting
- Records of employment produced from pay-period records, including layoff batches
- T4 and T4A slips and summaries filed by the last day of February

## Remote, with no Fort Saskatchewan office

EverStone is a sole practitioner CPA firm that works online. There is no office in Fort Saskatchewan to visit. Employers are served through video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature. Payroll travels well remotely because the inputs are data — timesheets, rates, hires and terminations — and the outputs are documents. One accountant holds the file from the first remittance through to the February slips. The [deduction calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-deduction-calculator) is there if you want to check a single pay before you ask.

## Who this suits, and who it does not

This is for a Fort Saskatchewan employer with a core staff that grows and shrinks with project work — a fabrication shop, a mechanical or electrical contractor, an industrial services firm or a supplier behind them — as well as local retailers and service businesses with a steady team. You want general holiday pay worked on Alberta’s formula, layoff ROEs produced quickly and T4s that match the ledger. A large unionized workforce on shift-scheduling software needs a dedicated payroll platform instead, and we will say so at the first conversation.

Project payrolls swing with contract timing, so the remittances belong on [forecasting the cash it needs](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cash-flow-management).

Common questions

## Fort Saskatchewan payroll questions

**Does Alberta charge an employer health tax?**

No. Alberta has no employer payroll health tax. A Fort Saskatchewan employer’s statutory employment costs are CPP and EI on both sides plus WCB-Alberta premiums, with nothing provincial charged on the wage bill itself. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How is general holiday pay calculated in Alberta?**

At least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the general holiday. The base includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, not just regular wages.

**How many general holidays does Alberta have?**

Nine, with four additional optional days an employer may choose to recognize. Because the optional days are elective, they should be set out as a written policy so employees and payroll both know in advance which list applies.

**We staff up for shutdowns. What does payroll need?**

Clean onboarding records (TD1 forms, SINs, rates), hours by pay period, and a plan for the end of the job: final pay, vacation pay owing and a record of employment for each person within the required time. Allowances and end-of-job bonuses need their own treatment.

**Who administers workers’ compensation in Alberta?**

WCB-Alberta. Premiums are set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings, and registration is entirely separate from your CRA payroll account.

**Are my subcontractors really employees?**

It depends on the substance: who controls the work, who supplies the tools, who carries the financial risk and whether the worker can send someone else. If the answer points to employment, source deductions are owed by the payer, with penalties and interest if missed.

**Does EverStone have a Fort Saskatchewan office?**

No. The firm serves Fort Saskatchewan employers remotely by video meeting, secure file exchange and e-signature. Nothing in a payroll engagement requires a physical meeting.

**What does payroll cost for a Fort Saskatchewan employer?**

Payroll is part of the monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with bookkeeping and GST filing included; the fee depends on headcount and pay frequency and is fixed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

Alberta payroll has no provincial tax layer, which makes the first month simpler than most.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** Headcount, pay frequency, how the crew changes through the year, and what is filed or overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so remittance balances and notices get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), year-to-date payroll figures are requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Pay runs set up with Alberta tables, holiday policy written down, and the next twelve months of remittance and slip deadlines set before they arrive.
