# Payroll services in *Grande Prairie*

A Grande Prairie payroll is simpler than most on the provincial side — Alberta charges no payroll tax — and harder than most on the human side, because crews grow and shrink with the gas plays, the forestry calendar and construction season. EverStone runs payroll for [Grande Prairie businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-grande-prairie) remotely, from first remittance to February slips.

**Quick answer:** Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax, so a Grande Prairie employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks before the holiday. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Payroll for Grande Prairie employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filings included.

## What Alberta does not charge

Alberta has no employer health tax or provincial payroll levy. For a Grande Prairie employer, the statutory cost of a worker is federal — CPP and EI on both the employee and employer side, with income tax withheld — plus workers’ compensation premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill. For an owner who also runs crews in northern British Columbia, that difference is worth keeping in view, because a BC payroll above the exemption carries employer health tax that the Alberta payroll does not. The figures for both provinces sit on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## A payroll that changes size

The defining feature of most Grande Prairie payrolls is volatility. Service companies add hands when a drilling or completions program starts and release them when it ends. Forestry contractors, haulers and construction firms follow their own seasons, and spring breakup slows field work across the region. Each expansion means new TD1 forms, new payroll records and correct province of employment. Each contraction means a batch of records of employment, with insurable hours and earnings reported by pay period.

Employers who keep clean pay-period records produce those ROEs in an afternoon. Employers who do not spend a week reconstructing them while also managing the layoff itself. We keep the records in a state where the layoff batch is routine, and we file each ROE on time so former employees are not waiting on their EI claim.

## General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula

Alberta recognizes nine general holidays, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. The base is wider than wages alone: it includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, so a holiday that falls shortly after another is calculated on a slightly larger base.

That mechanism is different from British Columbia’s average day’s pay and Ontario’s divide-by-twenty formula. A national payroll template, or one carried over from a BC operation, can quietly produce the wrong figure. Rotations, camp schedules and long shifts make the calculation worth doing properly rather than approximating. The optional holidays should be a written policy, not a decision made the week the day falls. Our guide to [statutory holiday pay across provinces](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/statutory-holiday-pay-canada-employers) compares the formulas.

## Camps, travel and taxable benefits

Field work out of Grande Prairie often comes with board and lodging, travel time, per diems and vehicle use. Some of those payments are taxable benefits that belong on the T4 and in the withholding calculation; others are not, depending on how the arrangement is structured and documented. Getting this wrong is expensive, because the employer is assessed for the source deductions it should have withheld, plus penalties and interest. We review allowances and benefits when payroll is set up, so the treatment is decided once and applied consistently.

## Contractor or employee?

Long-term field hands paid as contractors are a common reassessment target in resource regions. Classification turns on the substance of the arrangement — who controls the schedule, who supplies the equipment, who carries financial risk and whether the worker can send a replacement — not on the label in the contract. Where the answer is employee, CPP and EI should have been withheld. [Subcontractor versus employee](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/subcontractor-vs-employee-cra) sets out the CRA’s tests.

## WCB-Alberta

Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by WCB-Alberta. Premiums are set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings, and the account is entirely separate from your CRA payroll account. The reporting draws on the same wage data but goes to a different body on a different schedule. We reconcile the two so that assessable earnings reported to WCB-Alberta match what the payroll actually paid.

## Remittances and the payroll account

Source deductions are remitted to the CRA on the schedule assigned to your payroll (RP) program account, and late remittances carry penalties that apply even when the payroll itself was correct. Variable pay compounds the risk: bonuses and retroactive increases have their own withholding method, and a large bonus run at the end of a strong season can change the remittance amount sharply. [How payroll remittances work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/payroll-remittances-canada-rp-account) explains the schedules.

## What the engagement covers

- Pay runs with Alberta tax tables, and the correct province of employment where crews work across the BC line

- Income tax, CPP and EI withheld and remitted on your assigned CRA schedule

- General holiday pay on the Alberta 4.2% basis, including an optional-holiday policy

- Vacation pay accrued and tracked as a liability

- WCB-Alberta registration support and assessable earnings reporting

- Records of employment from pay-period records, including seasonal layoff batches

- T4 and T4A slips and summaries filed by the last day of February

## Remote, and there is no Grande Prairie office

EverStone works online and has no Grande Prairie location. Payroll travels well remotely, because the inputs are timesheets and the outputs are pay stubs, remittances and slips. Hours arrive by upload or from your time-tracking app, approvals are by email, and one CPA holds the file all year. The [payroll deduction calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-deduction-calculator) is there if you want to check a single cheque yourself.

Common questions

## Grande Prairie payroll questions

**Does Alberta charge an employer health tax?**

No. Alberta has no employer payroll health tax. A Grande Prairie employer’s statutory employment costs are CPP and EI on both sides plus WCB-Alberta premiums, with nothing provincial charged on the wage bill itself. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How is general holiday pay calculated in Alberta?**

At least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the general holiday. The base includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, not just regular wages.

**How many general holidays does Alberta have?**

Nine, with four additional optional days an employer may choose to recognize. Because the optional days are elective, they should be set out in a written policy so employees and payroll know in advance which list applies.

**We lay off part of the crew every spring. What do we need to file?**

A record of employment for each employee who has an interruption of earnings, reporting insurable hours and earnings by pay period, filed within the required time. Clean pay-period records make this quick; we prepare the batch from the payroll file.

**Some of our crew work on jobs in BC. Which province applies?**

Province of employment generally follows where the employee reports for work, or for those who do not report to a location, where the employer’s establishment they are paid from is. It decides the provincial tax table and can bring BC rules into play. We set it per employee at onboarding.

**Does EverStone have a Grande Prairie office?**

No. The firm serves Grande Prairie employers remotely by email, video call, secure file exchange and e-signature. Nothing in a payroll engagement requires a physical meeting. Businesses in Clairmont, Sexsmith, Wembley and Beaverlodge are served the same way.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This is for a Grande Prairie employer with a core staff that grows and shrinks with field and project work — an oilfield service contractor, a hauler, a construction or forestry contractor, or the supplier behind them — that wants holiday pay right, ROEs fast and T4s that match the ledger. A large unionized workforce on shift-scheduling software needs a dedicated payroll platform, and we will say so in the first email.

## What happens when you get in touch

Alberta payroll has no provincial tax layer, which makes the first month simpler than most.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
