# Payroll services in *Langley*

Langley payrolls often include commissions, quarterly bonuses and company trucks driven home, each a benefit or withholding question that lands on the T4. EverStone runs payroll for [Langley businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-langley) remotely, at a written fixed fee.

**Quick answer:** Langley employers withhold income tax, CPP and EI on salary, commission and bonus pay, and must add the value of taxable benefits — company vehicles most commonly — to employment income. British Columbia layers [employer health tax](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/employer-health-tax) above an exemption and [WorkSafeBC](https://www.worksafebc.com/en/insurance/need-coverage) premiums on top of the federal deductions. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month.

Payroll covers the source deductions for CPP, EI premiums and income tax, the remittances to the CRA, the year-end T4 and T4A slips, and access through My Business Account.

The mileage log is what sizes the benefit — nothing else does.

## The company vehicle is a payroll problem before it is a tax problem

Langley has many businesses that put people in vehicles: dealerships, equipment and truck sales, distribution, field service and trades supply. An employer vehicle available for personal use is a **taxable benefit** in two parts: a *standby charge* for availability, and an *operating expense benefit* for employer-paid running costs on personal kilometres. Both are added to employment income, withheld on and reported on the T4.

The amount turns on the business-personal kilometre split, so it rests on a mileage log nobody enjoys keeping. Rebuilding the log in February is guessing, and a guess in the employee’s favour is what a review looks for. Decide in January how vehicles are tracked, and you pay correctly each month and finish February in an afternoon.

## Commission, bonuses and the withholding that goes with them

A salaried employee’s withholding is simple because pay repeats; commission does not. A commission earner claiming employment expenses can file a TD1X, so withholding uses estimated net commission, avoiding a big spring refund or, worse, an unexpected [balance owing](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments.html).

Bonuses have their own arithmetic. Running a lump sum through the ordinary periodic tables over-withholds, so there is a defined method for bonuses and retroactive increases. Errors rarely cost the business money, but they cost the employee’s trust, which in a commission-driven Langley business costs more.

## The BC layers: employer health tax and WorkSafeBC

Two provincial charges apply. Employer health tax exempts up to $1,000,000 of BC remuneration in a calendar year; between $1,000,000.01 and $1,500,000 it is 5.85% of the excess over $1,000,000; above $1,500,000, 1.95% of the total. Taxable benefits generally count as remuneration, so company vehicles push toward the threshold too. WorkSafeBC is assessed separately, by classification unit on assessable payroll. See the [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts) and our [guide to the $1M rule](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-employer-health-tax-guide).

## What the engagement includes

- Pay runs covering salary, hourly, commission and bonus pay
- Standby charge and operating expense benefits calculated from your vehicle records
- Other taxable benefits — allowances, parking, insurance — identified as they arise
- Income tax, CPP and EI withheld and remitted on your CRA schedule
- TD1 and TD1X forms collected and applied correctly
- T4 slips reflecting benefits in the right boxes, filed by the end of February
- Employer health tax and WorkSafeBC payroll reporting

## Remote by design

EverStone has no Langley office. Pay data arrives securely, approvals happen by email or short video call, and slips are delivered digitally, which suits managers on a lot rather than a desk. One CPA owns the file year-round, which matters most in February, when benefit calculations made the previous March must reconcile to the slips. The [payroll hub](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-hub) collects the guides if you prefer to read first.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This suits a Langley dealership, distributor or trades firm with commissioned staff, a company truck or two and a payroll in the dozens, wanting the [PD7A](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/pd7a) reconciled monthly and benefits on the T4s. A unionized shift workforce needs dedicated software. For the rest, [the fee](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fee-estimate) is agreed first.

Common questions

## Statutory holiday pay

A commissioned Langley salesperson is still owed stat pay. Qualifying employees receive an average day’s pay, and working the holiday adds a premium, calculated on the commission they actually earned. Use the [BC stat pay calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-stat-holiday-pay-calculator) for the amounts and our [holiday pay guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/statutory-holiday-pay-canada-employers) for eligibility.

## Langley payroll questions

**Is a company truck a taxable benefit if it is only driven to job sites?**

Home-to-work travel is generally personal, which surprises people. A vehicle available for personal use can create both a standby charge and an operating expense benefit. It turns on actual use, so a kilometre log kept at the time beats any later argument. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is a TD1X and which Langley employees should file one?**

It lets a commission earner have withholding based on estimated net commission rather than gross pay, suiting employees with swinging commissions or large employment expenses. Without it, the ordinary tables apply and the correction waits for assessment.

**Why is the tax on a bonus calculated differently?**

Periodic tables assume the amount repeats each pay period, so applying them to a lump sum treats it as annual salary and over-withholds heavily. The separate bonus and retroactive pay method keeps the deduction near the employee’s real liability.

**Do taxable benefits count toward BC employer health tax?**

Most taxable benefits count as BC remuneration for the tax, alongside salary, wages and bonuses. For a fleet business that can move the total meaningfully, so calculate it when you are near the exemption.

**Is there an EverStone office in Langley?**

No. Langley employers are served entirely remotely through video calls, secure document exchange and e-signature, which for a business with people spread across a yard or a territory is usually more convenient than a meeting in either city.

**Can benefits be added to payroll monthly instead of at year-end?**

Yes, and it is better practice. Adding benefits as they accrue spreads withholding and keeps net pay predictable. Leaving it to February means one large deduction on a single cheque, which no employer enjoys explaining.

**What does payroll cost for a Langley business?**

Nothing about a Langley address changes the fee. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month; a payroll-only engagement is quoted by headcount and pay frequency, in writing, after we review your enquiry. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Langley itself?**

Yes. Employers in Walnut Grove, Willoughby, Brookswood, Murrayville and Fort Langley are set up the same way as those in Langley: payroll runs remotely, remittances are scheduled, and the fee does not change with the address.

## Benefits and bonuses on the T4, not in a surprise

Company vehicles, commissions and bonuses handled the way the CRA expects them. Send an enquiry to a CPA.

## Remote payroll

EverStone handles Langley payrolls online. **There is no Langley office and no staff based there.** Commission reports and mileage logs arrive by secure upload; questions are settled by phone or video. Remittance dates matter more than proximity: the CRA rarely forgives a late payroll deposit.
