# Payroll services in *Leduc*

Alberta charges no provincial payroll tax, so a Leduc payroll is structurally simpler than the same payroll in Vancouver or Toronto. What it does not simplify is the work itself: shift crews, overtime, a general holiday formula unique to Alberta, and the records of employment that follow every slowdown. EverStone runs payroll for [Leduc businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-leduc) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax, so a Leduc employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. For a Leduc employer, payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Payroll for Leduc employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filings included.

## What Alberta does not charge

Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax. For a Leduc employer, the statutory cost of employing someone is federal — CPP and EI on both the employee and employer sides — plus workers’ compensation premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill.

That absence is worth quantifying rather than filing away as a general advantage. A British Columbia employer with $2,000,000 of remuneration pays [employer health tax](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/employer-health-tax) at 1.95% on the whole amount; the same payroll in Leduc attracts no equivalent provincial charge. For a company deciding where to place a growing team, or one already running payroll in more than one province, that is a recurring line item rather than a rounding difference. Both sides are tabled on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) and the [BC equivalent](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts).

## Leduc payrolls move with the work

The industries the City of Leduc and Leduc County name as their base — manufacturing and fabrication, energy services, transportation and warehousing, food processing, construction — all staff up and down with contracts and seasons. A fabrication shop adds welders for a large order. A contractor working in the business parks runs longer hours through the summer. A logistics operation near Edmonton International Airport runs shifts across evenings and weekends. Each of those patterns has a payroll consequence.

Overtime has to be calculated on the hours actually worked, under the rules that apply to the employee. Shift premiums, standby and travel time need clear policies so they are paid consistently. Bonuses and retroactive increases use their own withholding method rather than the ordinary periodic tables. And when the work slows, each departure produces a **record of employment** reporting insurable hours and earnings by pay period. Employers who keep clean pay-period records produce those in an afternoon; employers who do not spend a week reconstructing them while also managing the layoff itself.

## General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula

Alberta recognizes **nine general holidays**, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least **4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately preceding the general holiday**. Note what sits inside that base: not just wages, but vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay too, so a holiday falling shortly after another is calculated on a slightly larger figure.

That is a different mechanism from the average day’s pay used in British Columbia or the divide-by-twenty formula used in Ontario, and it is one of the places a national payroll template quietly produces the wrong number. A Leduc employer with rotating shifts or a crew whose hours change week to week has to compute it rather than approximate it. The optional holidays should be a written policy, not a decision made in the week the day falls.

## Vacation pay and its liability

Vacation pay accrues as employees work, whether it is paid out each cheque or banked and taken later. Where it is banked, the unpaid balance is a liability that belongs on the balance sheet and in the year-end figures, and it has to be paid out correctly when someone leaves. Tracking it per employee from the start avoids the most common termination-pay disputes. [Vacation pay rules for employers](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/vacation-pay-rules-canada-employers) covers the basics.

## WCB-Alberta and the classification question

Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by **WCB-Alberta**, with premiums set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings. Registration and reporting are separate from your CRA payroll account entirely, and the annual reporting draws on the same wage data. For Leduc businesses that hire both employees and subcontractors, the classification question matters twice: once for the CRA, which decides whether source deductions were owed, and once for WCB coverage. [Employee or contractor](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/employee-vs-contractor-cra-worker-classification) sets out the factors.

## Remittances, RC59 and the CRA schedule

Income tax, CPP and EI withheld from each pay are remitted on the schedule the CRA assigns to your payroll account, which depends on the size of your average monthly withholding. Late remittances attract penalties even when the payroll itself was correct. Our access to your payroll account comes through the CRA’s Represent a Client service or an RC59 authorization, so notices and balances are checked directly. At the end of the calendar year, T4 slips and the summary are filed by the last day of February, with T4A slips where you paid contractors or other amounts that need one.

## What the engagement covers

- Pay runs with Alberta tax tables applied to Alberta employees
- Income tax, CPP and EI withheld and remitted on your assigned CRA schedule
- Overtime, shift and standby pay applied consistently from written policies
- General holiday pay calculated on the Alberta 4.2% basis, including optional-holiday policy
- Vacation pay accrued and tracked as a liability
- WCB-Alberta registration support and assessable earnings reporting
- Records of employment produced from pay-period records, including layoff batches
- T4 and T4A slips and summaries filed by the last day of February

## Remote, and there is no Leduc office

EverStone is a CPA firm that works fully online. There is no Leduc office to visit. Leduc employers are served by video call, secure document exchange and e-signature, and timesheets or pay data come in by upload or from your time-tracking system. Payroll travels well remotely because the inputs are data and the outputs are documents. One accountant holds the file from the first remittance through to the February slips. The [deduction calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-deduction-calculator) is there if you want to check a single cheque first.

## Who this suits, and who it does not

This is for a Leduc employer with a core staff that grows and shrinks with contracts or seasons: a fabrication or machine shop, an energy-services contractor, a carrier or warehouse, a construction firm or the supplier behind them. You want holiday pay worked on Alberta’s formula, layoff ROEs produced quickly and T4s that match the ledger. A large unionized workforce on shift-scheduling software needs a dedicated payroll platform instead, and we will say so at the first conversation.

Contract payrolls swing with work timing, so the remittances belong in [forecasting the cash it needs](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cash-flow-management).

Common questions

## Leduc payroll questions

**Does Alberta charge an employer health tax?**

No. Alberta has no employer payroll health tax comparable to those in British Columbia, Ontario or Manitoba. A Leduc employer’s statutory employment costs are CPP and EI on both sides plus WCB-Alberta premiums. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**How is general holiday pay calculated in Alberta?**

At least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the general holiday. The base includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, not just regular wages.

**How many general holidays does Alberta have?**

Nine, with four additional optional days an employer may choose to recognize. Because the optional days are elective, they should be set out in a written policy so employees and payroll both know which list applies.

**We are laying off part of a crew. What do we need?**

A record of employment for each person, reporting insurable hours and earnings by pay period, plus final pay including any banked vacation pay. Clean pay-period records make the ROEs quick to produce; we prepare them from the payroll file.

**Who administers workers’ compensation in Alberta?**

WCB-Alberta. Premiums are set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings, and registration is separate from your CRA payroll account.

**Does EverStone have a Leduc office?**

No. The firm serves Leduc employers remotely by video call, secure file exchange and e-signature. Nothing in a payroll engagement requires a physical meeting.

**Do you run payroll for employers outside Leduc itself?**

Yes. Employers in Nisku, Leduc County, Beaumont, Devon and around Edmonton International Airport are served exactly as Leduc ones are, at the same fixed fees.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you.
