# Personal tax accountant in *Abbotsford*

For an incorporated Abbotsford owner, the personal return finishes decisions made at the corporate year-end, so EverStone prepares both as one file. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Abbotsford CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-abbotsford).

**Quick answer:** An incorporated owner in Abbotsford, British Columbia has a personal return whose contents were largely determined by the corporation months earlier. EverStone prepares the T1 and the corporate return together so the salary and dividend mix, RRSP room and provincial credit layer are settled once rather than reconciled afterwards. One CPA reads the T1s and the T2 side by side, and the fee is fixed in writing first. A basic T1 starts at $125.

By filing season every choice on the return is already fixed.

## The personal return is decided before it is filed

An employee’s T1 reports what happened; an owner’s T1 reports what was chosen. Salary or dividend, how much and which year are decided at the corporate year-end and fixed before the personal return. So one Chartered Professional Accountant should handle both.

This is personal tax for business owners and their families, prepared alongside the corporate file — not a walk-in return service.
Done separately, the corporate return surfaces personal consequences too late, and the personal return works from slips nobody planned. The [year-end checklist for incorporated owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/year-end-tax-checklist-incorporated-owners) lists what to settle before the window closes.

## Two calendars that do not line up

A corporation’s fiscal year can end in any month; an individual’s is the calendar year. A payment in the corporation’s final month can fall in either personal year, depending on structure and timing.

Owners with a non-December year-end feel this most: a strong corporate year can sit beside a light personal one. Knowing where a payment lands lets you smooth income over two years instead of stacking it into one.

## Only some of it creates RRSP room

Salary is employment income: it creates RRSP room and needs payroll withholding and remittances. Dividends create none. So an owner paid only dividends for years often has almost no contribution room, and that cannot be fixed retroactively.

That matters only if registered savings, not the corporation, are part of the plan. Decide it deliberately, not by default. See [RRSPs versus dividends for business owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/rrsp-vs-dividends-business-owner-canada).

## The provincial layer, and what it actually changes

Every Canadian resident pays federal tax computed on one set of brackets and provincial tax computed on another. British Columbia sets its own rates and its own list of non-refundable credits, applied to a taxable income figure that is largely federally defined.

The combined rate at each income level decides whether an extra dollar is better as salary or dividend. Provincial rates differ, so the right answer in Abbotsford may not suit an owner who moves. The [salary versus dividends comparison](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026) works through the mechanics.

## What normally comes with an owner’s return

Owner households also have items to coordinate. Either spouse can claim medical expenses and donations; tuition or childcare depends on who has income. A [home office](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-22900-other-employment-expenses/work-space-home-expenses.html) claim must match the corporate treatment, and [shareholder loan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/shareholder-loans-canada-taking-money-out-of-corporation) activity must reconcile to the books. They interact, so each answer depends on the others.

## What is covered

One Chartered Professional Accountant handles the whole file:

- T1 personal return, prepared alongside the corporate return
- Salary and dividend mix set before the corporate year-end closes
- RRSP room reviewed against the remuneration plan
- Spousal coordination on credits and claims
- Shareholder loan reconciliation between the two returns
- Instalment review and CRA correspondence

## Remote

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm, and every engagement runs online: video meetings, e-signature and secure upload. A local owner keeps the working morning, and the CPA who prepared the corporate return prepares the personal one.

The moment there are employees, [payroll in Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-abbotsford) becomes the recurring obligation.

For [fractional CFO in Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cfo-services-abbotsford), the scope and the fixed-fee approach are the same.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

The fit is an Abbotsford household with a complex T1: self-employment or rental income, investments, a corporation paying the owner, or a move or property sale. A single-T4 return suits free software, and we would say so. Otherwise the fee comes from the [published fixed fee schedule](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

For an Abbotsford owner the steps run in the same order every year, and the fee is settled at the first one.

- **Thirty minutes, at no charge.** We go through the corporate year-end, what was paid out, and what the CRA already holds. The fee is then confirmed in writing.

- **Slips pulled from the CRA.** With [CRA authorization](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) in place, the slips issued under your SIN come straight from the agency. Your part is the items it never receives.

- **A walk-through before filing.** You see the return before it goes in, with a short note on what set the balance and what to adjust ahead of the next corporate year-end.

Common questions

## Abbotsford personal tax FAQ

**Why prepare the personal and corporate returns together?**

It mostly reports decisions the corporation already made: salary or dividend, how much and which year, all fixed once slips are issued. With two preparers, at least one works blind. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Do dividends build RRSP contribution room?**

No; only earned income such as salary creates room. Years of dividends leave little room, which cannot be recovered retroactively. That matters only if registered savings, not the corporation, are the main savings vehicle.

**What happens when the corporate year-end is not December?**

The corporation reports on its fiscal year and an individual on the calendar year, so payments near the corporate year-end can fall in either personal year. That allows some smoothing of personal income, but only if planned before the payment.

**Does living in British Columbia change the salary-versus-dividend answer?**

It can. Each province sets its own rates and credits, and the combined rate at your income drives the salary-dividend decision. Moving provinces leaves the corporation unchanged but changes that arithmetic.

**Which spouse should claim medical expenses and donations?**

It depends on both incomes and other claims, since these items interact. Coordinating them across the household beats optimizing each return alone, one reason to prepare both returns together.

**Is an in-person meeting needed?**

No. The engagement is delivered remotely by video call, e-signature and secure upload. For a working owner that usually means the personal return is dealt with in a scheduled call rather than a lost morning.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Abbotsford?**

Abbotsford pays the same as anywhere EverStone works: from $125 for a basic T1, and usually $275 to $500 with self-employment schedules, fixed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Abbotsford itself?**

Yes. Owners in Clearbrook, Matsqui, Sumas Prairie and Bradner are looked after by video, phone, email and a secure upload link, on the same fixed fees that apply inside Abbotsford.
