Personal tax (T1) · Calgary

# Personal tax accountant in *Calgary*

The salary-versus-dividend question has no national answer, because half of the arithmetic is provincial. Alberta’s provincial layer is structured differently enough that a plan imported from another province usually needs re-running. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Calgary CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary).

**Quick answer:** For an incorporated owner in Calgary, Alberta the salary-versus-dividend decision turns on a combined federal and provincial rate, and Alberta’s provincial structure differs materially from British Columbia’s or Ontario’s. EverStone models the decision and prepares both the personal and corporate returns, entirely remotely. A basic T1 starts at $125.

When the tax gap narrows, everything else becomes the decision.

## The crossover is a combined-rate question

Salary is deductible to the corporation and taxed as employment income; dividends come from taxed corporate income, grossed up and offset by a dividend tax credit. Integration aims for similar total tax but never matches; provincial rates and the corporate rate the income bore set the gap.

Because the provincial half of the personal rate is set by each province and the provincial half of the corporate rate is too, integration is imperfect in a different way in each jurisdiction. That is why the answer genuinely moves when an owner moves.

## A flatter provincial layer changes the shape of the curve

Alberta has fewer provincial brackets across a wide range than several provinces and no Ontario-style surtax. So the combined marginal rate climbs gently through the middle range, weakening the case for holding income in the corporation, and the exact draw matters less than non-tax factors.

## Which makes the non-tax factors decisive

When the tax gap is small, other factors decide. Salary builds RRSP room and requires public pension contributions, a cost near retirement but a benefit when young, and gives lenders verifiable income. Dividends avoid [payroll remittance](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll/remitting-source-deductions.html) obligations and penalties and can be declared after year-end. These usually outweigh the tax difference. See [CPP for incorporated owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/cpp-for-incorporated-business-owners-canada).

## The corporate rate the income bore matters too

Dividends from small-business-rate income are non-eligible, with a smaller gross-up and credit; from general-rate income they can be eligible, with larger ones. The results differ meaningfully, and corporate history, not preference, decides. See [eligible versus non-eligible dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/eligible-vs-non-eligible-dividends-canada).

## The decision has a deadline

Salary needs withholding and slips, so decide it in advance. Dividends are more flexible after year-end but limited by retained earnings and split-income rules if paid to others. Leaving either to filing season removes most options.

The moment there are employees, [payroll in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-calgary) becomes the recurring obligation.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

For a Calgary owner with real decisions: corporate pay, self-employment, rental or investment income, an interprovincial move or a sale. A single T4 belongs in free software, and we will say so. Otherwise, see the [published fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

Calgary files move through three steps, all remote, with the fee fixed at the first.

- **An email enquiry.** We look at how you were paid, what changed during the year, and what the CRA already shows. The fee follows in writing.

- **No chasing paper.** Our [CRA authorization](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) lets us retrieve the T4 and T5 slips filed under your SIN. You provide only what the CRA does not receive.

- **A review call, then filing.** You see the return before it is sent, with a short explanation of the balance and of any change to next year's salary and dividend mix.

Common questions

## Calgary personal tax FAQ

**Is salary or dividends better for an Alberta owner?**

There is no universal answer: it depends on combined federal and provincial rates and the corporate rate the income bore. The routes never match exactly, and the gap varies by province. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Why does moving provinces change the answer?**

Each province sets its own personal and corporate rates, and the salary-dividend balance depends on both. A plan from another province is untested here and worth re-running.

**What does a flatter provincial structure change?**

Fewer provincial brackets across a wide range and no surtax on provincial tax, so the marginal rate climbs gently and an exact draw matters less.

**What are the non-tax reasons to take salary?**

Salary builds RRSP room, requires public pension contributions and gives lenders verifiable income. When the tax gap is small, these usually decide.

**Are all dividends taxed the same personally?**

No. Small-business-rate income pays non-eligible dividends with a smaller gross-up and credit; general-rate income can pay eligible dividends with larger ones. Corporate history decides.

**Can the decision be made at filing time?**

Not really. Salary needs withholding and slips, so decide it in advance. Dividends are more flexible after year-end but limited by retained earnings and split-income rules for family. Waiting removes options.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Calgary?**

Calgary pays the same fees: a basic T1 from $125, a self-employed return with schedules usually $275 to $500, fixed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Calgary itself?**

Yes. Because nothing needs a visit, owners in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere work with us exactly as Calgary clients do: video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.
