Once the remuneration decision is made, a separate set of mechanics decides what actually appears on an owner’s return, when tax has to be paid, and what the CRA will be comparing against. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Edmonton CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-edmonton).

**Quick answer:** An incorporated owner in Edmonton, Alberta reports remuneration through slips issued by their own corporation, and often owes tax with no withholding behind it. That combination produces [instalment](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html) obligations most employees never meet. EverStone prepares the corporate and personal returns together, entirely remotely. A basic T1 starts at $125.

Your own corporation files the slips you are measured against.

## The corporation issues the slips it will be measured against

An owner’s return is built from slips their corporation produced: a T4 for salary, with tax withheld and remitted during the year, and a T5 for dividends, with nothing withheld. Both also go to the CRA, so the return is matched against the corporation’s own figures. Careless slips, or slips that do not tie to the corporate accounts, create a self-inflicted mismatch. See [slip filing deadlines](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t4-t4a-t5-slip-filing-deadlines-canada).

## No withholding means the bill arrives whole

An employee has tax deducted every pay, so the return settles a small difference. An owner paid by dividend has had nothing withheld and owes a year’s personal tax at once. The first year is a shock; the second is worse, once instalments have usually begun. The remedy is setting money aside as dividends are declared, not treating them as spendable, which requires knowing the figure in advance.

## Instalments start after the tax, not with it

Personal instalments generally start once the amount owing at filing exceeds a threshold this year and in one of the two prior years. So an owner who switches to dividends owes a large first balance, then next year owes that year’s tax plus instalments toward it. [Instalment reminders](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments.html) follow prior filings, and unpaid required instalments attract interest, so plan against them. See [how instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada).

## Shareholder loans have to reconcile

Money taken from a corporation that is neither salary nor dividend generally sits in a shareholder loan account; amounts outstanding beyond a defined period can become personal income, and interest can be imputed on balances owing. An owner who draws all year and characterizes it later depends on a proper year-end reconciliation, as does the personal return, so one person should prepare both returns. See [shareholder loans](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/shareholder-loans-canada-taking-money-out-of-corporation).

## Two deadlines, and the one that is not extended

An individual who carried on a business, or whose spouse did, generally files by mid-June, but any [balance owing](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments.html) is due at the end of April, with interest from then. Owners often confuse the dates. The filing extension is real; a payment extension does not exist. See [personal tax deadlines](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cra-tax-deadlines#personal-tax-t1).

- T4 and T5 slip preparation tied to the corporate accounts
- Shareholder loan reconciliation between the two returns

Common questions

## Edmonton personal tax FAQ

**Which slip reports an owner’s remuneration?**

Salary goes on a T4, with tax withheld through the year; dividends on a T5, with none withheld. Both are filed with the CRA, so your return is matched against the corporation’s figures. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Why is there a large balance owing on a dividend year?**

Nothing was withheld. An employee settles a small difference; a dividend-paid owner owes the year’s full personal tax at once. Set the tax aside as dividends are declared, not treating them as spendable.

**When do personal tax instalments begin?**

Generally once the amount owing at filing exceeds a threshold this year and in one of the two prior years. The lag means a first large balance, then a year owing both new tax and instalments. Missed required instalments attract interest.

**What happens to money drawn that is neither salary nor dividend?**

It generally goes to a shareholder loan account. Amounts outstanding beyond a defined period can become personal income and balances can carry imputed interest, so one preparer should handle both returns.

**Does the June filing deadline extend the payment date?**

No. An individual who carried on a business, or whose spouse did, generally has until mid-June to file, but any balance owing is still due at the end of April and interest runs from then. Conflating the two dates is one of the most common and most avoidable costs on an owner’s file.

**Is there an EverStone office in Edmonton?**

No. Edmonton clients are served entirely remotely by video call, e-signature and secure document upload, with the federal and Alberta corporate returns and the personal return all prepared from one set of records.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Edmonton?**

Edmonton businesses pay the same published fees as everyone else. A basic T1 for an Edmonton filer is from $125. With self-employment schedules, expect $275 to $500 in most cases. Whatever the figure, it is confirmed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Edmonton itself?**

Yes. Owners in St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Nisku are served remotely just like Edmonton clients, using video, phone, email and a secure upload link, on the same fixed fees.
