# Personal tax accountant in *Leduc*

For a Leduc owner, the personal return is where the year’s business decisions finally land: the salary or dividends you took, the truck you use for both work and home, the rental suite, the instalments you did or did not pay. EverStone prepares T1 returns for owners, their families and self-employed people in Leduc entirely online. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Leduc CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-leduc).

**Quick answer:** A Leduc owner’s T1 is decided mostly before it is filed: the mix of salary and dividends, CPP and RRSP room, and instalments all follow from choices made during the year. EverStone models those choices on Alberta figures and prepares the personal and corporate returns together, remotely. For a Leduc filer, a basic T1 starts at $100.

## The return reflects decisions made months earlier

By the time the slips arrive in February, most of the personal tax result is already fixed. A salary was either run through payroll during the year or it was not. Dividends were declared out of retained earnings, or they were not. Instalments were paid on the CRA’s reminders, or a balance has been building. The filing itself is the record; the planning that changes the number happens earlier, ideally before the corporation’s own year end.

For Leduc owners that planning has a particular shape. Many run capital-heavy companies — fabrication, energy services, trucking, construction — where profit is uneven and the corporation needs to keep cash for equipment. The question is rarely just how much tax the owner pays this year. It is how much to draw, in what form, without starving the business of the cash it needs for the next purchase.

## Salary or dividends: a combined-rate question

Salary is deductible to the corporation and taxed personally as employment income, reported on a T4. A dividend is paid from income already taxed in the corporation, grossed up on the personal return and reduced by a dividend tax credit, and reported on a T5. The system is designed so the two routes produce broadly similar total tax — the idea called integration — but the alignment is never exact. The size and direction of the gap depend on the personal rates in the owner’s province and on which corporate rate the underlying income bore.

In Alberta, active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined in the corporation. A dividend paid out of that income is a non-eligible dividend, with a smaller gross-up and credit. Income taxed at the 23% general rate can support eligible dividends, with a larger gross-up and credit. Which kind a Leduc corporation can pay depends on its own tax history, not on preference. [Eligible versus non-eligible dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/eligible-vs-non-eligible-dividends-canada) explains the difference.

## The non-tax factors usually decide it

Where the pure tax difference between the two routes is modest, everything else stops being a tiebreaker and becomes the decision. Salary creates RRSP contribution room and requires CPP contributions, which is a cost to an owner near retirement and a benefit to a younger one. Salary is income a lender can verify, which matters to anyone financing a house, a shop or a piece of land. Dividends avoid [payroll remittance](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll/remitting-source-deductions.html) obligations and can be declared after a year is over. None of those are tax arguments, and all of them routinely outweigh the tax difference. See [CPP for incorporated owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/cpp-for-incorporated-business-owners-canada).

## Vehicles, home offices and mixed-use costs

A pickup that hauls tools on weekdays and the family on weekends is one of the most common items on a Leduc owner’s file, and one of the most commonly reviewed. Where the vehicle belongs to the corporation, personal use creates a taxable benefit on the owner’s T4. Where it belongs to the owner, the business share of costs is claimable against a reimbursement or on a self-employed return. Either way the support is a logbook kept at the time, not an estimate made at filing. Home offices follow the same rule: the workspace has to meet the conditions, and the share claimed has to be recorded, not remembered.

## Self-employed returns and the T2125

Not every Leduc client is incorporated. Sole proprietors — a welder working on contract, a trucker with one unit, a consultant billing a few operators, a home-based business in Beaumont or Devon — report business income on form T2125 within their T1. The self-employed get until June 15 to file but must still pay by April 30, and interest runs from that date on anything unpaid. CPP is paid on both the employee and employer shares. Once tax owing passes the CRA’s threshold, quarterly instalments follow, and the reminders arrive whether the year was strong or not. A return like that needs the same care as a small corporation’s books, and it often raises the question of whether incorporating would now make sense.

## Families, rental income and investment slips

Many Leduc households combine employment income from the industrial parks or the airport with a business, a rental suite or investment accounts. Each adds slips and schedules: T5s for investment income, T3s from trusts and funds, rental statements with their own expense rules and CCA choices. Paying a family member through the corporation brings split-income rules into view; paying them through payroll requires that the work is real and the pay reasonable. We prepare the family’s returns together where that helps, so credits and transfers land where they are worth most.

## The decision has a deadline

A salary requires withholding through the year and slips after it ends, so it has to be decided in advance. A dividend has more flexibility after year end but is limited by the corporation’s retained earnings and by split-income rules if it is paid to someone else. Neither is a filing-season decision, and treating it as one removes most of the options before anyone looks at the numbers.

The moment there are employees, [payroll in Leduc](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-leduc) becomes the recurring obligation.

## What is covered

- RRSP room and CPP trade-off reviewed together

- T1 prepared alongside the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1
- T2125 self-employment schedules, rental statements and investment slips
- Instalment review and CRA correspondence

EverStone has no Leduc location. Engagements run entirely online — video meetings, e-signature and secure upload — and our CRA authorization lets us retrieve most slips directly. See [accounting for Alberta businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) for the provincial picture.

Common questions

## Leduc personal tax FAQ

**Is salary or dividends better for an Alberta owner?**

There is no universal answer, because the comparison depends on a combined federal and Alberta rate and on which corporate rate the underlying income bore. The tax gap is often modest, so RRSP room, CPP, lending needs and the corporation’s cash usually decide it. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**I am self-employed in Leduc. When do I file and pay?**

File by June 15, but pay any balance by April 30. Interest runs from April 30 on anything unpaid, so the later filing date does not delay the payment. Business income goes on form T2125 within your T1.

**Why do I get instalment reminders from the CRA?**

Because your tax owing at filing passed the CRA’s threshold, usually from self-employment, rental or dividend income with no tax withheld. The reminders suggest amounts based on past years; paying them avoids instalment interest, and we review whether a different amount suits the year you are having.

**Can I claim my truck on my personal return?**

The business share of costs can be claimed on a self-employed return, supported by a logbook. If the corporation owns the truck, personal use instead creates a taxable benefit on your T4. Either way the record kept at the time is what supports the figure.

**Are all dividends taxed the same personally?**

No. A dividend paid from income taxed at the small business rate is non-eligible, with a smaller gross-up and credit. One paid from income taxed at the general rate can be eligible, with a larger gross-up and credit. Which is available depends on the corporation’s own tax history.

**Can the salary-or-dividend decision be made at filing time?**

Not really. Salary requires withholding through the year and slips after it, so it must be decided in advance. A dividend has more flexibility after year end but is limited by retained earnings and by split-income rules where it is paid to a family member.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Leduc?**

The fee is the same in Leduc as anywhere else EverStone works. For a Leduc filer, a basic T1 costs from $100, and a self-employed return with schedules usually costs $250 to $450. The fee is written down before any work. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with filers outside Leduc itself?**

Yes. Because nothing needs a visit, owners and families in Nisku, Leduc County, Beaumont and Devon work with us exactly as Leduc clients do: video, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This is aimed at a Leduc filer whose return carries real decisions: salary and dividends from a corporation, self-employment, rental or investment income, or a year with a move between provinces or a sale. A single T4 with nothing else belongs in free software, and we will point you there rather than send a quote. Everything else is priced from the [published fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

Leduc files move through three steps, all remote, with the fee fixed at the first.

- **An email enquiry.** We look at how you were paid, what changed during the year, and what the CRA already shows. The fee follows in writing.

- **No chasing paper.** Our [CRA authorization](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) lets us retrieve the T4 and T5 slips filed under your SIN. You provide only what the CRA does not receive.

- **A review call, then filing.** You see the return before it is sent, with a short explanation of the balance and of any change to next year’s salary and dividend mix.
