**Quick answer:** An incorporated owner in Maple Ridge, British Columbia chooses between three places to keep surplus: a registered plan, a tax-free account, or the corporation itself. The three behave differently on the personal return and at withdrawal. EverStone prepares the T1 and the corporate return together, entirely remotely. The T1s and the T2 are prepared together by one CPA, at a fee fixed in writing beforehand. A basic T1 starts at $125.

A deferral is worth the gap between two rates — and no more.

## Three places to put a surplus dollar

An incorporated owner has a third place to save: the corporation. An RRSP-type contribution cuts tax now and is taxed on withdrawal. A tax-free account gives no deduction and no tax later. Money kept in the corporation is taxed at corporate rates now and personally when drawn.

None is always better. The comparison depends on your marginal rate now, your expected rate at withdrawal, and how long the money sits. It is an owner’s decision because the corporate route exists only if the money is never drawn.

## The room has to be created before it can be used

Registered retirement plan room comes from earned income, mainly salary, at a set percentage up to an annual maximum. Dividends create none, so a dividend-only owner has no room, not because of a rule about owners but because the input was never there. Tax-free account room accrues to every adult resident regardless of income, making it the one channel unaffected by how you pay yourself. Know this before a pay policy becomes a decade-long habit.

## Deferral is only worth something if the rate falls

A registered plan pays off when you deduct at a higher rate than you will pay on withdrawal. For an owner with an unusually high-income year and a lower expected retirement income, that gap is real. For one with modest income now and a large corporation paying out later, the gap can be small or reversed.

An incorporated owner can partly control personal income in both periods, so the standard advice can be tested instead of guessed. See [leaving money in the corporation or paying it out](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/leave-money-in-corporation-or-pay-out-canada).

## What retaining earnings costs and what it buys

Retained active income is taxed at corporate rates, leaving more capital working. But corporate investment income is taxed less favourably, passive assets can erode the small-business rate, the money is taxed again when drawn, and creditors can reach it. See [investment income in a corporation](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/small-business-deduction-passive-income-canada).

## The contribution and the return are separate events

A registered contribution made in the first sixty days of a year can generally count for the prior year or be carried forward, so you can place the deduction where it is worth most. For an owner with uneven income, holding a deduction for a higher-income year is legitimate; deducting by reflex wastes that flexibility. See [RRSPs versus dividends for business owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/rrsp-vs-dividends-business-owner-canada).

Owners who need [fractional CFO in Maple Ridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cfo-services-maple-ridge) as well will find it on the same terms.

If [Maple Ridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-maple-ridge) and [getting the Maple Ridge returns filed](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-maple-ridge) is the more pressing job, start there instead.

For a Maple Ridge owner deciding between an RRSP, a TFSA or the corporation, or with self-employment, rental or investment income, a move or a sale. ## What happens when you get in touch

For a Maple Ridge household the three steps are the same each year, with the fee agreed at the start.

- **A thirty-minute call, free.** We look at contribution room, how you were paid, and what the CRA already has. The fee is confirmed in writing.

- **We pull the slips.** With [authorization on your CRA account](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), the slips and RRSP receipts filed under your SIN come directly to us. You add only what the CRA cannot see.

- **Reviewed before filing.** We show you the return and the room it leaves for next year, so the next contribution is a decision rather than a guess.

Common questions

## Maple Ridge personal tax FAQ

**Is an RRSP or the corporation better for an incorporated owner?**

Neither always. A registered plan deducts now and is taxed on withdrawal; retained earnings are taxed corporately now and personally later. It turns on your current and future rates and the holding period, so model real figures. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Why is there almost no RRSP room after years of dividends?**

Room comes from earned income such as salary, at a set percentage up to an annual maximum, and dividends create none. It is not a rule aimed at owners; the input was simply missing, and past years cannot be recovered.

**Does a TFSA depend on how the owner is paid?**

No. Every adult Canadian resident earns room regardless of income, so dividend-only pay does not close it. With little RRSP room, a TFSA matters more.

**What is the downside of leaving money in the corporation?**

Corporate investment income is taxed less favourably, passive assets can erode the small-business rate, and the money is taxed again when drawn. Creditors can also reach it.

**Must an RRSP contribution be deducted in the year it is made?**

No. A contribution in the first sixty days can generally apply to the prior year, and deductions carry forward. With uneven income, saving it for a higher-income year is legitimate.

**Is there an EverStone office in Maple Ridge?**

No. Maple Ridge clients are served remotely by video call, e-signature and secure upload. For a discussion that is essentially about comparing numbers on a shared screen, the remote format is if anything the better one.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Maple Ridge?**

Maple Ridge pays the same as anywhere. A basic T1 starts at $125; self-employment returns usually run $275 to $500, quoted in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Maple Ridge itself?**

Yes. Pitt Meadows, Albion, Silver Valley and Whonnock owners are served remotely on the same terms as Maple Ridge: video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.
