# Personal tax accountant in *Medicine Hat*

Most Medicine Hat returns that need an accountant are not complicated because of one big item. They are complicated because several ordinary things meet on one T1: a salary from a corporation, a farm schedule, a T2125 for a side business, a rental, a land sale. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Medicine Hat CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-medicine-hat).

**Quick answer:** For an incorporated owner, self-employed person or farm family in Medicine Hat, Alberta, the personal return is where the corporation’s pay decisions, farm income and any side business finally meet. EverStone prepares the T1 alongside the corporate return, models salary against dividends on Alberta numbers, and works entirely remotely. A basic T1 starts at $100.

Medicine Hat T1 files commonly carry T4 and T5 slips from an owner’s corporation, a T2125 business schedule, farming income, rental income, RRSP room and instalment reminders.

## Salary or dividends is a combined-rate question

Salary is deductible to the corporation and taxed personally as employment income, reported on a T4. A dividend is paid from income the corporation has already taxed, grossed up on the personal return and reduced by a dividend tax credit, and reported on a T5. The system is designed so the two routes produce broadly similar total tax, but the alignment is never exact. The size and direction of the gap depend on the owner’s province and on which corporate rate the income bore.

That is why a plan built on another province’s numbers needs re-running in Alberta, and why a Medicine Hat owner who moved here from Saskatchewan, Ontario or British Columbia should not assume last year’s mix still fits. The [salary and dividend calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/salary-vs-dividends-calculator) shows the shape of the comparison; the real answer comes from the corporation’s actual figures.

## Alberta’s flatter provincial layer

Alberta applies fewer provincial rate steps across a wide range of income than several other provinces do, and it does not add a surtax computed on provincial tax. Two consequences follow. The combined marginal rate rises less sharply through the middle range, which weakens the usual argument for holding personal income down just to leave it in the corporation. And small changes in the amount drawn produce small changes in the marginal rate, so the decision is less about hitting an exact number and more about the non-tax factors below.

## Which makes the non-tax factors decisive

Where the pure tax difference between salary and dividends is modest, everything else decides it. Salary creates RRSP contribution room and requires CPP contributions, which is a cost to an owner near retirement and a benefit to a younger one. Salary is verifiable income for a lender, which matters to anyone financing a house, an acreage or more land. Dividends avoid [payroll remittance](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll/remitting-source-deductions.html) obligations and can be declared after the year’s results are known. See [CPP for incorporated owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/cpp-for-incorporated-business-owners-canada).

## Eligible and non-eligible dividends

A dividend paid from income taxed at the small business rate is non-eligible, with a smaller gross-up and credit. A dividend paid from income taxed at the general rate can be eligible, with a larger gross-up and credit. Many Medicine Hat corporations earn mostly small-business income, so most of their dividends are non-eligible; a corporation that has grown past the $500,000 limit, or earned general-rate income in a strong year, may have eligible dividend capacity it is not using. Which kind is available depends on the corporation’s tax history, not on preference. See [eligible versus non-eligible dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/eligible-vs-non-eligible-dividends-canada).

## Self-employed: the T2125 and the June deadline

Unincorporated contractors, consultants, hair and wellness practitioners, and the many tradespeople who start out as sole proprietors report business income on form T2125 inside the T1. The filing deadline for a self-employed person is June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30, and interest runs from then. The usual problems are predictable: vehicle expenses without a log, a home office claimed at a proportion that cannot be shown, and GST collected on sales but treated as income. A sole proprietor who passes the $30,000 small-supplier threshold also has to register for GST, which changes how income is reported on the T2125.

## Farm income on the personal return

An unincorporated farm around Medicine Hat reports on the farming schedule rather than the T2125, usually on the cash method, which lets sales and prepaid inputs move between years. That flexibility belongs in a plan made before December, not a reconstruction in April. Where farming is not the family’s chief source of income — a hay field or a small herd alongside a plant job, for example — a loss can be restricted. The rules are set out on [farm accounting in Medicine Hat](https://www.everstonecpa.com/farm-accountant-medicine-hat).

## Instalments for people who are not on payroll

Owners paid mostly by dividends, farmers in a good year and self-employed people have no tax withheld at source, so the CRA may ask for personal instalments once the balance owing passes its threshold. The reminders arrive with a suggested amount based on prior years, which is often wrong for someone whose income moves with a crop, a contract or the plant turnaround calendar. We review the reminder against the year you are actually having, because underpaying produces instalment interest and overpaying ties up cash for a year. The [instalment calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-instalment-calculator) shows how the methods differ.

The moment there are employees, [payroll in Medicine Hat](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-medicine-hat) becomes the recurring obligation.

Common questions

## Medicine Hat personal tax FAQ

**Is salary or dividends better for an Alberta owner?**

There is no universal answer, because the comparison depends on a combined federal and provincial rate and on which corporate rate the income bore. Where the tax gap is modest, RRSP room, CPP and how a lender sees your income usually decide it. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**I moved to Medicine Hat from another province. Does my pay plan still work?**

Not necessarily. Each province sets its own personal and corporate rates, and the balance between salary and dividends depends on both. A plan built on another province’s numbers is not wrong so much as untested, and it is worth re-running for Alberta.

**When is my self-employed return due?**

June 15 for filing, but any balance owing is due April 30. Interest runs from April 30 on anything unpaid, so a self-employed person who waits until June to find out what they owe usually pays some interest.

**Why did the CRA send me instalment reminders?**

Because your balance owing passed the CRA’s threshold in recent years and little or no tax is withheld at source. The suggested amounts are based on past years; if this year is different, another method may be more accurate.

**Are all dividends taxed the same personally?**

No. Dividends from small-business-rate income are non-eligible, with a smaller gross-up and credit. Dividends from general-rate income can be eligible, with a larger gross-up and credit. Which kind is available depends on the corporation’s own history.

**Can the salary and dividend decision wait until tax time?**

Not really. Salary requires withholding through the year and T4 slips after it, so it has to be decided in advance. A dividend is more flexible but is limited by retained earnings and by split-income rules where it is paid to a family member.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Medicine Hat?**

The fee is the same in Medicine Hat as anywhere else EverStone works. A basic T1 costs from $100, and a self-employed return with schedules usually costs $250 to $450. The fee is written down before any work. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with people outside Medicine Hat itself?**

Yes. Because nothing needs a visit, owners and families in Redcliff, Dunmore, Cypress County, Bow Island and Brooks work with us exactly as Medicine Hat clients do: email, video, a secure upload link and the same fixed fees.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This is aimed at a Medicine Hat owner or family whose return carries real decisions: salary and dividends from a corporation, self-employment, farm income, a rental, or a year with a move between provinces or a land sale. A single T4 with nothing else belongs in free software, and we will point you there rather than send a quote. Everything else is priced from the [published fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

Medicine Hat files move through three steps, all remote, with the fee fixed at the first.

- **An email enquiry.** We look at how you were paid, what changed during the year, and what the CRA already shows. The fee follows in writing.

- **No chasing paper.** Our [CRA authorization](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) lets us retrieve the T4 and T5 slips filed under your SIN. You provide only what the CRA does not receive: business records, farm receipts, rental figures.

- **A review, then filing.** You see the return before it is sent, with a short explanation of the balance and of any change to next year’s salary and dividend mix or instalments.
