# Personal tax accountant in *Oakville*

Ontario adds two things to a personal return that most provinces do not, and both make an Oakville owner’s choice between salary and dividends behave differently. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Oakville CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-oakville).

**Quick answer:** An owner filing a T1 in Oakville, Ontario meets two provincial features absent in most provinces: a surtax calculated on provincial tax payable rather than on income, and a separate health premium. Both change how a dividend behaves. EverStone prepares the personal and corporate returns together, entirely online. For an Oakville resident, a basic T1 starts at $100.

A personal return covers the T1 with slips such as the T4 and T5, RRSP and TFSA room, rental income on the T776 and business income on the T2125.

A tax calculated on a tax behaves differently from one on income.

## Who files with us in Oakville

Most of our Oakville personal returns belong to people whose income is shaped by more than a single employer. The town’s economic development office lists professional services, technology and digital media, health and life sciences, and advanced manufacturing as its key sectors, and a good share of the people working in those fields eventually incorporate a consultancy or a practice. Their T1 then carries T4 salary and T5 dividends from their own company, and often a rental property, an investment account or a spouse who also draws from the corporation. Others are still employed and run a side business on a T2125, or have just sold a property, retired from a corporate role, or moved in from another province.

What those returns have in common is that the answer depends on decisions made earlier in the year — how much salary the company paid, whether a dividend was declared, whether RRSP room was used — and on Ontario’s provincial layer, which works differently from most other provinces.

## A tax calculated on a tax

Most provinces compute personal tax by applying rates to taxable income and then subtracting credits. Ontario does that and then adds a surtax computed as a percentage of the basic provincial tax payable itself, in tiers, once that amount passes defined levels. The difference between a tax on income and a tax on tax sounds academic and is not.

Because the surtax multiplies provincial tax rather than income, anything that increases provincial tax increases the surtax with it, and anything that reduces provincial tax — including non-refundable credits applied before the surtax is computed — reduces the surtax as well. A credit in Ontario is therefore worth more than its face rate suggests, and an extra dollar of provincial tax costs more than the marginal rate implies. For an Oakville household with two incomes, where donations, medical expenses and other credits are claimed matters more than it would elsewhere.

## Why this matters more for dividends

A dividend is grossed up before tax is calculated and then reduced by a dividend tax credit. In a province with a plain rate-times-income structure, those two steps largely offset in a predictable way. In Ontario, the gross-up raises taxable income, which raises basic provincial tax, which raises the surtax, and the dividend tax credit then reduces provincial tax and therefore the surtax as well.

The two effects do not cancel neatly. The result is that the crossover between paying salary and paying dividends sits in a different place in Ontario than in a province without a surtax. An owner who moved to Oakville from elsewhere and kept the same pay policy is not keeping the same outcome. The distinction between [eligible and non-eligible dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/eligible-vs-non-eligible-dividends-canada) changes the size of the gross-up, and most small-company dividends are non-eligible.

## The health premium is a separate line

Ontario also levies a health premium through the personal income tax system, calculated by reference to taxable income and stepped rather than proportional. It is not part of the surtax calculation. For an owner, the practical point is that it responds to taxable income, including the grossed-up amount of a dividend rather than the cash received, so it reacts to the mix of income and not only its size.

## Salary, dividends and RRSP room

Salary paid by your corporation appears on a T4, carries CPP contributions and creates RRSP contribution room for the following year. Dividends appear on a T5, carry no CPP and create no RRSP room. Neither is better in every case. An owner who wants to build RRSP room, qualify for a mortgage on a steady T4 income, or keep paying into CPP will lean toward salary; an owner with enough retirement savings who wants to keep the corporate payroll simple may lean toward dividends. Ontario’s surtax moves the crossover between the two, which is why we run the numbers each year rather than repeating last year’s split. See [salary versus dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026) and the [calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/salary-vs-dividends-calculator).

## Rental property and capital gains

Many Oakville owners hold a rental condo or a basement suite alongside the business. Rental income goes on form T776, with expenses claimed against it and capital cost allowance considered carefully, because claiming CCA on a rental building is recaptured when the property is sold. A sale of a property that was not your principal residence produces a capital gain; selling a principal residence still has to be reported, with the designation made on the return. We keep the history of each property on file so the numbers are ready when the sale happens, not reconstructed from memory.

## The federal half is the same everywhere

None of this touches the federal return, which is computed identically for every Canadian resident. That is why a CPA outside Oakville can prepare an Oakville resident’s return: the federal legislation is national, and the Ontario layer is a defined schedule applied on top of it. What has to be right is the provincial schedule and the credits that belong to it. See [Ontario tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/ontario-tax-facts).

## Getting the sequence right

For an incorporated owner, all of this is decided before the T1 is prepared. The amount and form of pay is set around the corporate year-end, and by filing season the surtax, the premium and the credits are simply consequences. The useful work happens in the autumn for a December year-end, or in the month before the corporate year-end for anyone else. That is why one preparer for both the T2 and the T1 matters more in Ontario. The corporate side is covered on [corporate tax in Oakville](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-oakville).

## Instalments and the self-employed deadline

A self-employed Oakville resident files by June 15 but still has to pay by April 30, and interest runs on anything unpaid after that date. Once the balance owing passes the CRA’s threshold in two consecutive years, quarterly instalment reminders start arriving. Owners paid mainly by dividends meet this sooner than they expect, because no tax is withheld at source on a dividend. We work out whether instalments are needed and how much, so the April balance is not a surprise.

## What is covered

One Chartered Professional Accountant handles the whole file:

- T1 preparation with the full Ontario provincial schedule
- Surtax and health premium effects modelled before pay is set
- Salary and dividend mix reviewed against the provincial structure
- T2125 business income, T776 rental income and capital gains
- Corporate return prepared on the same file
- Instalment review and CRA correspondence

## Remote, and there is no Oakville office

EverStone has no Oakville location. Engagements run entirely online — video meetings, e-signature and secure document upload. Personal income tax is federal legislation with a provincial schedule on top, so preparation is not tied to a local address.

The moment there are employees, [payroll in Oakville](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-oakville) becomes the recurring obligation.

Common questions

## Oakville personal tax FAQ

**What is the Ontario surtax?**

An additional amount calculated as a percentage of basic Ontario tax payable, in tiers, once that amount passes defined levels. Because it is computed on tax rather than on income, anything that raises provincial tax raises the surtax with it, and any credit that reduces provincial tax reduces the surtax as well. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Are non-refundable credits worth more in Ontario?**

In effect, yes. Because credits reduce basic provincial tax before the surtax is applied, reducing provincial tax also reduces the surtax computed on it. The combined benefit of a credit is therefore larger than its stated provincial rate implies, which makes credit placement across a household worth attention.

**Why does Ontario change the salary-versus-dividend answer?**

Because the dividend gross-up raises taxable income and therefore basic provincial tax and the surtax on it, while the dividend tax credit reduces provincial tax and the surtax together. The two effects do not offset neatly, so the crossover between salary and dividends sits in a different place than in a province without a surtax.

**What is the Ontario Health Premium?**

A separate amount paid through the personal income tax system, calculated by reference to taxable income in steps rather than proportionally. It responds to taxable income, which for an owner means the grossed-up amount of a dividend rather than the cash received.

**I own a rental condo as well as my business. What changes?**

The rental goes on form T776 with its expenses. Whether to claim CCA on the building is a judgment call, because it is recaptured on sale. We keep the purchase cost and improvement history on file so the eventual sale is reported correctly.

**When should the salary or dividend decision be made?**

Before the corporate year-end, not at filing time. By the time the personal return is prepared, the surtax, the premium and every credit are consequences of choices already made. For a December year-end that means the useful conversation happens in the autumn.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Oakville?**

Nothing about an Oakville address changes the fee. In Oakville, a basic T1 is from $100 and a self-employed return with schedules is commonly $250 to $450. The fee is fixed in writing before we start. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with people outside Oakville itself?**

Yes. Owners in Burlington, Milton, Halton Hills and Mississauga are served remotely like Oakville clients, with video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This is for an Oakville resident whose Ontario return is shaped by more than wages: dividends from a corporation, self-employment, rental or investment income, or a year with a move or a sale. A single T4 and nothing else is a job for free software, and we will say that instead of quoting. Other returns are priced from the [published fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

Oakville files are handled remotely in three steps, with the fee confirmed before any preparation.
