# Personal tax accountant in *Richmond Hill*

For a Richmond Hill business owner, the personal return is where the company’s decisions land: the salary or dividends you took, the rental unit, the investment account, the spouse on the share register. Ontario adds two calculations that make those choices behave differently here. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Richmond Hill CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-richmond-hill).

**Quick answer:** An owner filing a T1 in Richmond Hill, Ontario meets two provincial features absent from most provinces: a surtax calculated on provincial tax payable rather than on income, and a separate Ontario Health Premium. Both change how a dividend behaves compared with salary. EverStone prepares the personal and corporate returns together, entirely online. In Richmond Hill, a basic T1 starts at $100 and a self-employed return with schedules is commonly $250 to $450.

A personal return covers the T1 with slips such as the T4 and T5, RRSP and TFSA room, rental income on the T776 and business income on the T2125.

## Who files with us in Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill’s business base is weighted toward professional, scientific and technical services, health, and finance and insurance — the sectors the City itself names as its strongest — and small businesses account for more than 80% of the businesses in the city. That shows up in the personal returns we prepare. Incorporated engineers, IT consultants and developers paying themselves from a corporation. Health professionals and practice owners. Insurance and financial advisers with commission income on a T4A or through a corporation. Self-employed people reporting on form T2125 before they incorporate. Many of them also own a rental property or hold investments that produce T5 and T3 slips.

Each of those returns is straightforward to file and easy to get slightly wrong in a way that costs money for years: a dividend that should have been salary, an RRSP contribution made without room, a rental loss that does not survive a CRA review, or a home office claim made against the wrong income.

## A tax calculated on a tax

Most provinces compute personal tax by applying rates to taxable income and subtracting credits. Ontario does that and then adds a surtax computed as a percentage of the basic provincial tax itself, in tiers, once that tax passes set levels. That sounds like a technicality and is not.

Because the surtax multiplies provincial tax rather than income, anything that increases provincial tax also increases the surtax, and anything that reduces it — including non-refundable credits applied before the surtax is calculated — reduces the surtax too. A credit in Ontario is therefore worth more than its face rate suggests, and an extra dollar of provincial tax costs more than the marginal rate implies. For a household deciding which spouse claims donations or medical expenses, that matters.

## Why dividends behave differently in Ontario

A dividend is grossed up before tax is calculated and then reduced by a dividend tax credit. In a province with a simple rate-times-income structure those two steps offset in a predictable way. In Ontario the gross-up raises taxable income, which raises basic provincial tax, which raises the surtax; the dividend tax credit then pulls provincial tax and the surtax back down.

The two effects do not cancel neatly, so the crossover point between salary and dividends sits somewhere different in Ontario than in a province without a surtax. Salary also brings CPP contributions and RRSP room, and is deductible to the company; dividends bring neither but avoid payroll. The right mix for a Richmond Hill owner depends on how much they need to live on, what the company is retaining, and whether salary is also feeding an SR&ED claim. The difference between [eligible and non-eligible dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/eligible-vs-non-eligible-dividends-canada) changes the gross-up again, and [salary versus dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026) works through the trade-off.

## The health premium is a separate line

Ontario also charges a health premium through the personal tax system, calculated from taxable income in steps rather than as a percentage. It is not part of the surtax calculation and is not reduced by credits in the ordinary way. The practical consequence for an owner is that it responds to taxable income — including the grossed-up amount of a dividend rather than the cash actually received. It is one more item that reacts to how income is composed, not only how much there is.

## Family members on the share register

Many owner-managed corporations in Richmond Hill have a spouse or adult children holding shares. Dividends paid to them are reported on their own T1s, but the tax on split income rules can tax those dividends at the top rate unless an exception applies — for example, a sufficient labour contribution to the business, excluded shares, or an age-based exception. The test is factual, so it is reviewed before the dividend is declared and documented in the file. [Tax on split income](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/tosi-tax-on-split-income-canada) sets out the exceptions in plain terms.

## Instalments and the June deadline

Self-employed people have until June 15 to file but must pay by April 30, and anyone whose tax owing passes the CRA threshold in consecutive years will receive personal instalment reminders. Owners who pay themselves only dividends often end up here, because no tax is withheld at source. We size the instalments to the current year rather than leaving you to follow a reminder based on last year’s figures. The [instalment calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-instalment-calculator) gives a first estimate.

## The federal half is the same everywhere

None of this touches the federal return, which is calculated identically for every Canadian resident. That is why a CPA with no Richmond Hill office can prepare a Richmond Hill return: the federal legislation is national, and the Ontario layer is a defined schedule on top. What has to be right is the provincial schedule and the credits that belong to it, together with the company’s figures. See [Ontario tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/ontario-tax-facts) for the corporate rates behind the planning.

## Getting the sequence right

Almost all of this is decided before the return is prepared. The amount and form of pay is set around the corporate year-end, and by filing season the surtax, the premium and the credits are simply consequences. The useful conversation therefore happens in the autumn for a December year-end, or in the month before the company’s year-end otherwise. That is also why one preparer for both the T1 and the [corporate return in Richmond Hill](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-richmond-hill) matters more in Ontario than in a province with a flatter structure.

Common questions

## Richmond Hill personal tax FAQ

**What is the Ontario surtax?**

An additional amount calculated as a percentage of basic Ontario tax payable, in tiers, once that amount passes defined levels. Because it is computed on tax rather than on income, anything that raises provincial tax raises the surtax with it, and any credit that reduces provincial tax reduces the surtax too. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Should I pay myself salary or dividends from my Richmond Hill company?**

It depends on what you need to draw, what the company keeps, and whether you want CPP and RRSP room. In Ontario the surtax and health premium move the crossover point, so the mix is modelled with both returns side by side before the company’s year-end.

**What is the Ontario Health Premium?**

A separate amount paid through the personal income tax system, calculated from taxable income in steps rather than proportionally. For an owner it reacts to the grossed-up amount of a dividend rather than the cash received.

**Can my spouse receive dividends from my corporation?**

They can, but the tax on split income rules may tax them at the top rate unless an exception applies, such as a sufficient labour contribution or excluded shares. We review the facts before the dividend is declared.

**Can a CPA with no Richmond Hill office prepare my return?**

Yes. The federal calculation is national and identical for every resident; the Ontario layer is a defined schedule on top. Slips are downloaded from the CRA under your authorisation, and the return is reviewed with you by video before it is filed.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Richmond Hill?**

Nothing about a Richmond Hill address changes the fee. A basic T1 is from $100 and a self-employed return with schedules is commonly $250 to $450. The fee is fixed in writing before we start. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with people outside Richmond Hill itself?**

Yes. Owners in Oak Ridges, Aurora, Markham, Vaughan and elsewhere in York Region are served remotely exactly like Richmond Hill clients, at the same fixed fees. Toronto owners have the [Toronto accountant page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-toronto).

This is for a Richmond Hill owner whose Ontario return is shaped by more than wages: dividends from a corporation, self-employment, rental or investment income, or a year with a move or a sale. A single T4 and nothing else is a job for free software, and we will say that instead of quoting. Other returns are priced from the [published fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).
