**Quick answer:** A Windsor resident files a Canadian T1 reporting income from everywhere, including wages earned in Michigan, and claims a credit for US tax already paid on them. The return is due April 30, or June 15 if you or your spouse are self-employed, with any balance still due April 30. EverStone prepares personal returns from $125 and self-employed returns with schedules commonly for $275 to $500 and all of it runs remotely.

## Living in Windsor, working in Detroit

Windsor is one of the few Canadian cities where a daily commute can cross an international border. Nurses, engineers and tradespeople who live here and work in Michigan are taxed by both countries on the same wages: the United States taxes the employment income where it is earned, and Canada taxes its residents on worldwide income. The Canadian return reports the US wages converted to Canadian dollars and claims a foreign tax credit for the US income tax paid on them, so the same dollar is not fully taxed twice. The US return is a separate filing, and the Canadian T1 is built from it, so the US figures need to be final before the Canadian one is finished.

The details are where errors creep in: the exchange rate used, US deductions that have no Canadian equivalent, contributions to a US retirement plan, and the timing between the two filing seasons. We work from your US return and W-2 and prepare the Canadian side so it lines up.

## The dates that apply to you

Most individuals file by April 30. If you or your spouse carry on a business, the filing deadline moves to June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30, and interest starts from that date. If your net tax owing is more than $3,000 in the current year and in either of the two previous years, the CRA expects instalments on March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. Cross-border workers often land in instalments without expecting to, because no Canadian tax is withheld from a US paycheque. The [instalment calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-instalment-calculator) shows whether you are affected, and the [personal tax deadline](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-deadline) page lists the rest.

## Owners of Essex County corporations

If you own a manufacturing shop, a trucking company or a contracting business through a corporation, your T1 is where the corporation’s choices land. Salary arrives on a T4, dividends on a T5, and the mix between them decides your RRSP room, your CPP and your personal tax. A shareholder loan not repaid within one year after the corporation’s year-end is generally taxed as your income, and it surfaces on the T1 rather than the T2. We prepare the corporate and personal returns together where we hold both, so the numbers agree. The [Windsor corporate tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-windsor) page covers the company side.

Timing matters too. A dividend declared in December lands on this year’s return; one declared in January waits a year. A bonus accrued by the corporation has to be paid within a set period after year-end to stay deductible. Those are decisions made in the autumn, before the slips are printed, which is why we raise them then rather than in April.

## Self-employed and owner-operators

Unincorporated owners report business income on form T2125 within the T1: the owner-operator hauling under a carrier’s authority, the renovator working across LaSalle and Lakeshore, the retailer who has not incorporated yet. Vehicle costs need a log, home office costs need a measured space, and equipment goes through capital cost allowance rather than being expensed. HST registration is required once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters. A self-employed return with schedules is commonly $275 to $500 and the [self-employed return](https://www.everstonecpa.com/self-employed-tax-return) page covers what we need from you. Drivers should also read the [Windsor trucking page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trucking-accountant-windsor).

## Growers who report farm income personally

Not every greenhouse in Leamington or Kingsville is incorporated. A grower who farms as a sole proprietor or through a partnership reports farm income on the T1 and can use the cash method, recording income when it is received and expenses when they are paid. That flexibility makes year-end timing a planning tool. Qualified farm property can also qualify for the lifetime capital gains exemption on a sale, and can pass to a child through an intergenerational rollover, and both reward planning that starts years before the transfer. The [Essex County greenhouse page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/greenhouse-accountant-windsor) goes into the operating side.

## US accounts, US property and the T1135

Living next to Detroit, many Windsor residents hold a US bank account, a US brokerage account or a property across the river. Foreign income from those assets is reported on the T1 in Canadian dollars, and once the total cost of specified foreign property passes the reporting threshold, form T1135 is required alongside the return. Penalties for a missing T1135 apply even when no tax is owing, so it is worth confirming each year. [T1135 reporting](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t1135-foreign-income-verification-canada) explains what counts.

## What it costs and how it runs

A personal return starts at $125 for a straightforward file. A self-employed return with schedules is commonly $275 to $500 depending on the records. Cross-border and farm returns are quoted after a short conversation, in writing, before work begins. You send slips and statements through a secure upload link, we prepare the return, and you sign electronically. If a notice of assessment arrives that you disagree with, a notice of objection has to be filed within 90 days. Keep your records for six years. Common questions

## Windsor personal tax questions

**Do you prepare the US return as well?**

EverStone prepares the Canadian T1. The US return is a separate filing, and we build the Canadian return from it so the foreign tax credit matches what was actually paid. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Why do I owe Canadian tax when I already paid US tax?**

The foreign tax credit is limited to the Canadian tax on that income. Where Canadian tax on the wages is higher than the US tax paid, the difference is owed in Canada.

**When is my return due if I am self-employed?**

June 15, but the balance owing is still due April 30. Paying by April 30 avoids interest even if the return is filed later.

**What exchange rate is used for my US wages?**

Generally the Bank of Canada annual average rate for the year, or the daily rate where income was received on specific dates. The same rate approach is applied to the US tax paid, so the credit and the income match.

**Do I need to report a US bank account?**

Interest from it is reported every year. The account itself goes on form T1135 once your total foreign property cost passes the reporting threshold at any time in the year.

**Can you prepare my spouse’s return as well?**

Yes. Family returns are usually prepared together so credits, pension splitting and dependants are claimed on the right return.

**I have not filed for a few years. Can you help?**

Yes. We gather the slips the CRA holds, rebuild the missing years and file them in order. [Catching up on taxes](https://www.everstonecpa.com/behind-on-taxes-catch-up) explains how it works.

**What does a personal tax return cost in Windsor?**

Nothing about a Windsor address changes the fee. A basic T1 starts from $125. A self-employed return with schedules commonly runs $275 to $500. The fee is quoted in writing before any work begins. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Windsor itself?**

Yes. Returns for people in LaSalle, Tecumseh, Lakeshore, Leamington and the rest of Essex County are prepared the same way as for Windsor: documents come in through a secure upload link, and the fee is the same.
