# Personal tax accountant in *Winnipeg*

Manitoba has distinctive personal credits, several tied to housing costs. If your income is adjustable, learn them before the year closes. See [personal tax services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) and the [Winnipeg CPA page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-winnipeg).

**Quick answer:** An incorporated owner filing in Winnipeg, Manitoba completes a provincial schedule with its own credits, including amounts connected to residential property costs rather than income alone. Some are refundable and some are not. EverStone prepares the personal and corporate returns together, entirely remotely. A basic T1 starts at $125.

Personal tax returns for Winnipeg residents start from $125 per return; a self-employed return is commonly $275 to $500. A personal return covers the T1 with slips such as the T4 and T5, RRSP and TFSA room, rental income on the T776 and business income on the T2125.

The provincial schedule is a separate document, not a copy.

## The provincial schedule is not a copy of the federal one

Federal and provincial tax are computed on separate rules. Manitoba keeps its own non-refundable credits and rates, applied to a largely federal taxable income figure, so a claim can be worth a different amount provincially, and some exist in only one calculation. Copying the federal figures across and assuming the provincial side follows is how real entitlements go unclaimed — simply by never reading the provincial schedule as its own document.

## Credits connected to where you live, not only what you earn

Manitoba offers personal credits linked to property tax or rent, for homeowners and tenants under defined conditions. Because they depend on housing rather than income, households that assume they do not qualify often miss them. They also interact with a home-based business: where home costs are claimed elsewhere, both claims cannot take the full amount.

## Refundable and non-refundable behave differently

A non-refundable credit reduces tax to zero and no further. A refundable credit can pay out even when no tax is owed. Manitoba’s credits include both, which changes what a low-income year is worth. For an owner who controls their draw, a deliberately low-income year can still bring refundable amounts, while non-refundable amounts are wasted. Knowing each claim’s category makes that a decision, not an accident.

## Which is why the draw and the credits should be set together

An incorporated owner controls the amount and form of personal income. Drawing more can reduce income-tested and refundable provincial amounts; drawing less preserves them but leaves income taxed at corporate rates. Neither is always right: test both on actual figures before the corporate year-end, not at filing. See [Manitoba tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/manitoba-tax-facts) and [salary versus dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026).

## The rest of the return is national

Everything outside the provincial schedule — the dividend gross-up, capital gains inclusion, shareholder loans, when [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/payments/payments-cra/individual-payments/income-tax-instalments.html) are required — is federal law, identical in Winnipeg and the Fraser Valley. That is why a CPA outside Manitoba can prepare a Manitoba return properly: the national portion does not vary, and the provincial portion is a defined schedule worked on its own terms. See [accounting for Manitoba businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-manitoba).

## What is covered

One Chartered Professional Accountant handles the whole file:

- T1 preparation with the Manitoba provincial schedule worked separately
- Property-related and other provincial credits reviewed against eligibility
- Refundable and non-refundable amounts distinguished before the draw is set
- Home-based business claims kept consistent across both claims
- Corporate return prepared on the same file

## Remote, and there is no Winnipeg office

EverStone has no Winnipeg location. Engagements run entirely online — video meetings, e-signature and secure document upload, and personal income tax is federal legislation with a provincial schedule on top.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This suits a Winnipeg owner whose Manitoba return goes beyond wages: a corporation, self-employment, a home business, rental or investment income, a move or sale. A single T4 belongs in free software. Other files use the [published fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

Winnipeg returns are prepared remotely in three steps, with the fee agreed before any work.

- **A no-cost thirty-minute call.** We cover your income, your housing costs and what the CRA has on file. The fee is then set out in writing.

- **Slips pulled from the CRA.** Our [authorization with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) lets us collect the slips reported under your SIN. You provide property tax and rent records, which it does not receive.

Common questions

## Winnipeg personal tax FAQ

**Are Manitoba credits the same as the federal ones?**

No. Manitoba has its own non-refundable credits and rates on a largely federal taxable income, so a claim can be worth a different amount provincially or exist on only one side. Work the schedule separately. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Are there credits tied to housing costs?**

Manitoba has credits tied to property tax or rent, for homeowners and tenants under defined conditions. Because they depend on housing, not income, households that assume they do not qualify often miss them.

**What is the difference between refundable and non-refundable?**

A non-refundable credit reduces tax payable to zero and no further, so it is wasted where there is no tax to reduce. A refundable credit can produce a payment even where nothing is owed. Manitoba has both kinds, and the distinction changes what a deliberately low-income year is actually worth.

**Should an owner draw less to preserve credits?**

Sometimes, not automatically. Drawing more can reduce income-tested provincial amounts; drawing less preserves them but defers income at corporate rates. Test both before the corporate year-end.

**How does a home-based business affect these claims?**

The claims must be consistent. If a share of a residence’s costs is already claimed against business income, the same costs cannot also be claimed in full elsewhere. Aligning the two is easy when done deliberately.

**Can a CPA outside Manitoba prepare a Manitoba return?**

Yes. Everything outside the provincial schedule — the dividend gross-up, capital gains inclusion, shareholder loan rules, instalment thresholds — is federal law and identical nationwide. The provincial portion is a defined schedule that needs no local address.

**Do you work with businesses outside Winnipeg itself?**

Yes. Returns for people in Steinbach, Selkirk and the surrounding Capital Region are prepared the same way as for Winnipeg: documents come in through a secure upload link, and the fee is the same.
