# Trades accountant in *Airdrie*

Construction is one of the strengths the City of Airdrie lists for its workforce, and the residential growth across the city and Rocky View County keeps framers, electricians, plumbers, concrete and landscaping crews busy. Alberta gives those companies a simpler purchasing position than any neighbouring province and a stricter payment clock. EverStone is a [CPA for incorporated contractors](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant) and an [Airdrie small-business accountant](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-airdrie), working fully online.

**Quick answer:** Trades companies in Airdrie pay no provincial sales tax on materials and recover the 5% GST through input tax credits. They file a federal T2 and an Alberta AT1, report subcontractor payments on T5018 slips where construction is their main activity, carry WCB-Alberta coverage, and work to statutory prompt payment deadlines. Published fees start at $300 a month for bookkeeping and $100 for a personal return.

Bookkeeping for tradesmen in Airdrie is kept monthly, so the AT1 and the T2 come out of a reconciled, job-costed file rather than a shoebox in March.

## No provincial sales tax on the purchasing side

Alberta levies no provincial sales tax, which removes a layer a trades company in BC, Manitoba or Ontario cannot avoid. Materials carry [GST only](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts), and because a registrant recovers GST through [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html), sales tax on materials is not a cost buried inside an Airdrie bid. Estimating is cleaner and cash flow smoother, because the GST on a large lumber or fixtures order comes back on the next return. A company that later bids work in a PST province needs to know its estimating template no longer gives a correct number.

## Two corporate returns, not one

Alberta administers its own corporate income tax. A corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 and, separately, the AT1. Missing the second is a common failure for a company that moved its base to Airdrie from another province, because nothing about the federal return prompts the provincial one. Where crews work for extended stretches outside Alberta, income may also have to be allocated among provinces where the corporation has a permanent establishment. See [corporate tax in Airdrie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-airdrie).

## The payment clock runs on a statutory schedule

Alberta’s construction lien legislation sets prompt payment timelines through the contracting chain. Under the province’s published rules, an owner must pay the amount payable to a contractor within 28 calendar days of receiving a proper invoice, and a contractor must then pay each subcontractor within 7 calendar days of receiving payment from the owner. A subcontractor not paid within the required timeline can start an adjudication.

For an Airdrie subtrade working under a builder, that makes invoicing discipline a cash-flow tool: a proper invoice, issued promptly, starts the clock. For a general contractor, it means subtrade money received from the owner is a dated obligation, and a payables process that releases subtrade payments against receipt of owner funds is the operational answer.

## Holdbacks and work in progress

Amounts held back under a construction contract are recognized on their own timing, not simply when the invoice goes out, and they need their own schedule so nothing is forgotten when the holdback period ends. At year end, work completed but not yet billed has to be accrued and deposits for work not yet done treated as obligations. In a seasonal trade where much of the year’s revenue arrives between spring and late autumn, those cut-off entries decide what the year looks like to the CRA and to the bank.

## WCB-Alberta and the subtrade check

Coverage in Alberta is administered by WCB-Alberta, with premiums set by industry classification on assessable earnings. A hiring company that pays a subtrade without confirming its account standing can find the gap becomes its own liability. Build the confirmation into the release of final payment and file it with the invoice. It also forces the classification question into the open — whether a regular helper is a subcontractor or an employee — while it can still be answered cleanly. See [payroll in Airdrie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-airdrie) for the employee side.

## Subtrade slips and job costing

The federal **[T5018](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/t5018.html)** obligation applies in Alberta as everywhere else: a business whose main activity is construction, and which pays others for construction services, generally reports those payments. The reporting is only as good as the payables coding underneath it. Separating subtrade labour from materials at entry, and tagging both to a job, produces the slips as a by-product — and a defensible answer to which jobs and which builders actually made money. The [T5018 reporting guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t5018-subcontractor-reporting-construction) sets out the mechanics.

## Trucks, tools and equipment

Pickups, trailers, skid steers and larger tools are capitalized and claimed through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada), not expensed in full. A vehicle log separating business from personal kilometres is what supports the vehicle claim, and it has to be kept the same week, not rebuilt at tax time. Timing a large purchase relative to the fiscal year end changes the first-year claim, so talk about it before the order is placed.

## The licence and the home shop

The City of Airdrie requires a business licence for businesses carried on in the city, with home-based, commercial and non-resident categories, renewed each December. An Airdrie contractor running the business from home with tools, materials or deliveries at the house will usually need a home business development permit as well; one from out of town working in the city falls under the non-resident category. None of that is a tax filing, but it is the kind of obligation that is easy to let lapse in a busy season.

## Sole proprietor or corporation

Many Airdrie trades start as a sole proprietor filing a T2125 on the owner’s T1, and that is often right in the first year or two. The case for incorporating builds once the business earns comfortably more than the household needs to live on, because income left in the corporation is taxed at 11% combined rather than at personal rates. Incorporation brings two corporate returns, formal books, payroll or dividends for the owner, and liability protection that matters in a trade where a single job can go badly. [When to incorporate](https://www.everstonecpa.com/should-i-incorporate) works through the test.

## What is covered

One Chartered Professional Accountant handles the whole file:

- Federal T2 and Alberta AT1 corporate returns
- GST registration, filing and input tax credit reconciliation
- T5018 information returns and subtrade classification review
- Job-costed bookkeeping and holdback schedules
- Payroll, WCB-Alberta reporting and records of employment
- Year-end financial statements and owner pay planning

## Fully online, no office visits

EverStone works fully online and has no Airdrie location. Invoices, receipts and bank feeds come in electronically, questions go by email, and returns are e-signed. That suits a trade where the owner is on site all day and catches up on paperwork in the evening.

Common questions

## Airdrie trades accounting FAQ

**Is there sales tax on materials in Airdrie?**

Only GST. Alberta levies no provincial sales tax, and a registrant recovers the GST through input tax credits, so it is not a permanent cost inside a bid. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What are the prompt payment deadlines in Alberta?**

Under Alberta’s published rules, an owner pays a contractor within 28 calendar days of a proper invoice, and a contractor pays each subcontractor within 7 calendar days of being paid. An unpaid subcontractor can begin an adjudication.

**Do T5018 slips apply to Airdrie contractors?**

Yes. It is a federal requirement: a business whose main activity is construction and which pays others for construction services generally reports those payments.

**What does an accountant cost for an Airdrie trades business?**

**Do you work with trades outside Airdrie itself?**

Yes. Contractors in Crossfield, Balzac, Carstairs, Irricana and across Rocky View County are served the same way, at the same fixed fees.
