# Trades accountant in *Leduc*

Leduc’s trades work two markets at once: industrial work in the Leduc and Nisku business parks, where welders, electricians and fabricators support manufacturing and energy operations, and residential and commercial building in Leduc and the communities around it. Alberta gives both a simpler purchasing position than any neighbouring province and a stricter payment clock. EverStone is a [CPA for incorporated contractors](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant) and a [Leduc small-business accountant](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-leduc), working remotely.

**Quick answer:** Trades companies in Leduc pay no provincial sales tax on materials. They do file a separate Alberta corporate return, carry WCB Alberta obligations, report subtrade payments on T5018 slips, and work to statutory payment deadlines down the contracting chain. EverStone prepares the federal and Alberta returns, GST filings and subtrade slips remotely. For a Leduc trades business, published fees start at $300 a month for bookkeeping and $100 for a personal return.

Bookkeeping for tradesmen in Leduc is kept monthly, so the AT1 and the T2 come out of a reconciled, job-costed file rather than a box of receipts in the spring.

## Industrial and residential work, one set of books

The City of Leduc points to its local tradespeople — metal fabricators, welders and electrical specialists among them — as part of what supports energy and manufacturing operations in the area. Leduc County’s Nisku Business Park adds energy, food processing, logistics and manufacturing businesses that all need maintenance, installation and fabrication work. At the same time, residential and light commercial building continues in Leduc, Beaumont, Devon and the county.

Many Leduc trades companies do both, and the two markets behave differently. Industrial work tends to come through purchase orders and master service agreements with long payment terms, safety prequalification and detailed invoicing requirements. Residential and commercial work runs through general contractors and owners, with holdbacks and the prompt payment rules described below. A ledger that does not separate them cannot tell an owner which side of the business is actually making money.

## No provincial sales tax changes the purchasing side

Alberta does not levy a provincial sales tax, which removes a layer of complexity a trades company in British Columbia, Manitoba or Ontario cannot avoid. Materials carry [GST only](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts), and because GST is fully recoverable by a registrant through [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html), sales tax on materials is not a cost buried inside a Leduc bid. Estimating is cleaner, cash flow is smoother because the tax on a large material order comes back, and a company that later bids work in a PST province needs to know its estimating template will no longer produce a correct number.

## Two corporate returns, not one

Alberta administers its own corporate income tax. A corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 and, separately, an Alberta AT1. Missing the second one is a common and entirely avoidable failure for a company new to the province, because completing the federal return feels like the whole obligation. Where crews work an extended stretch in another province, income may also have to be allocated among the provinces where the corporation has a permanent establishment — a tax fact, not just a scheduling one.

## The payment clock runs on a statutory schedule

Alberta’s construction lien legislation sets prompt payment timelines through the contracting chain. Under the province’s published rules, an owner must pay the amount payable to a contractor within 28 calendar days of receiving a proper invoice, and a contractor must then pay each subcontractor what is owed within 7 calendar days of receiving payment from the owner. A subcontractor who is not paid within the required timeline can start an adjudication.

For accounting that is not a legal footnote. A company sitting on subtrade money after being paid is carrying a defined, dated exposure. Invoices have to be “proper” for the clock to start, so invoicing discipline has direct cash consequences. A payables process that releases subtrade payments against receipt of owner funds, and a receivables process that issues complete invoices promptly, are the operational answer. Holdbacks are tracked separately on both sides, because they are recognized on their own timing. [Holdbacks in the accounts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/construction-holdbacks-accounting-canada) explains the entries.

## WCB Alberta and the subtrade check

Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by WCB Alberta. A hiring company that pays a subtrade without confirming its account standing can find the gap becomes its own liability later. Building the confirmation into the release of final payment, and filing it with the invoice, keeps the exposure inside the job it belongs to. It also brings the classification question into the open: a long-running “subcontractor” who works only for you, on your schedule, with your tools, may be an employee for both the CRA and WCB. [Employee or contractor](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/employee-vs-contractor-cra-worker-classification) sets out the factors.

## Subtrade slips and job costing

The federal **[T5018](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/t5018.html)** obligation applies in Alberta exactly as elsewhere. A business whose main activity is construction, and which pays others for construction services, generally reports those payments. The reporting is only as good as the payables coding underneath it. Separating subtrade labour from materials at entry, and tagging both to a job, produces the slips as a by-product — and produces something more useful besides: a defensible answer to which job made money. The [T5018 reporting guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t5018-subcontractor-reporting-construction) sets out the mechanics.

## Trucks, tools and the CCA schedule

Service trucks, trailers, welders, lifts and shop tools are capital assets recovered through capital cost allowance at the rate for each class. Small tools may be expensed; larger equipment is capitalized. Trade-ins are disposals even when no cash moves, and claiming more CCA than a well-kept truck actually lost in value brings recapture into income when it is sold. A vehicle used for both work and home needs a logbook, whether it belongs to the corporation or the owner.

## Municipal licensing in Leduc

The City of Leduc requires all businesses operating within the city, including home-based and temporary businesses, to hold a business licence, and it has a separate non-resident category for businesses from outside the city. A contractor from Beaumont or the county taking work inside Leduc should check which applies before the job starts. That is a municipal requirement rather than a tax one, but it belongs on the same start-up checklist as GST registration and a WCB account.

## What is covered

One Chartered Professional Accountant handles the whole file:

- Federal T2 and Alberta AT1 corporate returns
- Income allocation where work crosses provincial lines
- GST registration, filing and input tax credit reconciliation
- T5018 information returns and subtrade classification review
- Job-costed bookkeeping, holdback schedules and work in progress
- Payroll for crews, including overtime, holiday pay and ROEs
- Year-end financial statements and owner remuneration planning

Common questions

## Leduc trades accounting FAQ

**Is there sales tax on materials in Leduc?**

Alberta levies no provincial sales tax, so materials carry GST only. Because a registrant recovers GST through input tax credits, sales tax on materials is not a permanent cost inside a Leduc bid the way provincial tax is in BC, Manitoba or Ontario. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Does an Alberta corporation file a separate provincial return?**

Yes. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 and a separate Alberta AT1. Companies that have recently started operating in Alberta commonly miss the second filing.

**What are the prompt payment deadlines in Alberta?**

Under Alberta’s published prompt payment rules, an owner must pay a contractor the amount payable within 28 calendar days of receiving a proper invoice, and a contractor must pay each subcontractor within 7 calendar days of receiving payment from the owner. An unpaid subcontractor can begin an adjudication.

**Do T5018 slips apply to Alberta contractors?**

Yes — it is a federal requirement, so it applies regardless of province. A business whose main activity is construction and which pays others for construction services generally reports those payments.

**I do both industrial and residential work. Should the books separate them?**

Yes. The two markets have different payment terms, invoicing rules and margins. Tagging revenue and direct costs by market and by job shows which side is earning, and makes holdbacks and receivables easier to manage.

**Do I need a Leduc business licence for a job in the city?**

The City of Leduc says all businesses operating within the city need a licence, and it has a non-resident category for businesses from elsewhere. Check the city’s business licence page before the job starts.

**What does an accountant cost for a Leduc trades business?**

Nothing about a Leduc address changes the fee. Monthly bookkeeping starts from $300 a month and a personal return from $100; a corporate return is quoted after we review your enquiry. A single question can go to a 45-minute Advice Call, a flat fee of $200 + GST. Every fee is fixed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with trades businesses outside Leduc itself?**

Yes. Trades businesses in Nisku, Leduc County, Beaumont and Devon are served the same way as those in Leduc, remotely and at the same fixed fees.
