# Trades accountant in *Spruce Grove*

Alberta gives a trades company a simpler purchasing position than any of its neighbours and a more demanding payment clock. For a Spruce Grove contractor working residential builds in a growing city and commercial jobs across the Edmonton region, both change how the file should be run. EverStone is a [CPA for incorporated contractors](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant) and a [Spruce Grove small-business accountant](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-spruce-grove), working remotely.

**Quick answer:** Trades companies in Spruce Grove, Alberta pay no provincial sales tax on materials. They do file a separate provincial corporate return, carry WCB-Alberta obligations, and work to statutory payment deadlines down the contracting chain. EverStone prepares the federal and Alberta corporate returns, GST filings and T5018 slips remotely. For a Spruce Grove contractor, published fees start at $300 a month for bookkeeping and $100 for a personal return.

Bookkeeping for tradespeople in Spruce Grove is kept monthly, so the AT1 and the T2 come out of a reconciled, job-costed file rather than a shoebox in March.

## A growing city, and work across the region

The City of Spruce Grove’s own industrial land study describes it as one of the fastest growing municipalities in the Edmonton Region, with a growing residential base and more commercial and service businesses opening to serve it. For trades, that means steady residential and renovation work close to home. It also means many Spruce Grove contractors spend much of the year on sites in Stony Plain, Acheson, Parkland County and Edmonton, sometimes for general contractors they bill on long payment terms. The accounting has to follow the work, not the address.

## No provincial sales tax changes the purchasing side

Alberta does not levy a provincial sales tax. Materials carry [GST only](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts), and a registrant recovers that GST through [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html), so sales tax on materials is not a cost buried inside a Spruce Grove bid the way provincial tax is in British Columbia, Manitoba or Ontario. Estimating is cleaner and cash flow is smoother, because the tax paid on a large lumber, steel or electrical order comes back. A company that later bids work in a PST province needs to know its estimating template no longer produces the right number.

## Two corporate returns, not one

Alberta administers its own corporate income tax. A trades corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 and, separately, an Alberta AT1 return. Missing the second is a common and avoidable failure for a company that incorporated recently, because completing the federal return feels like the whole obligation. Where crews work for an extended period outside Alberta, income may also have to be allocated between provinces — a question about where the crews were becomes a question about which government gets the tax.

## The payment clock runs on a statutory schedule

Alberta’s construction lien legislation sets prompt payment timelines through the contracting chain. Under the province’s published rules, an owner must pay the amount payable to a contractor within 28 calendar days of receiving a proper invoice, and a contractor must then pay each subcontractor what is owed within 7 calendar days of receiving payment from the owner. A subcontractor not paid within the required timeline can start an adjudication.

For the books, that turns invoicing discipline into a cash item. A Spruce Grove general contractor holding subtrade money after being paid is carrying a dated exposure, and because the owner’s 28 days run from a proper invoice, an incomplete invoice only delays the money. A payables process that releases subtrade payments against receipt of owner funds, and a receivables process that issues proper invoices promptly, are the practical answer.

## Holdbacks and work in progress

Amounts held back under a construction contract are recognized on their own timing, not simply when invoiced, and they need their own schedule so they are collected when released rather than forgotten. Jobs that straddle the year end need work in progress measured, so that one year’s profit is not pushed into the next. Both matter more as a Spruce Grove contractor moves from small residential jobs to larger commercial packages. See [construction holdbacks](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/construction-holdbacks-accounting-canada).

## WCB-Alberta and the subtrade check

Coverage in Alberta is administered by WCB-Alberta, with premiums set by industry classification on assessable earnings. A hiring company that pays a subtrade without confirming its account standing can find the gap becomes its own liability later. Building the clearance check into the release of final payment, and filing it with the invoice, keeps the exposure inside the job it belongs to. It also forces the worker classification question into the open while it can still be answered — see [subcontractor versus employee](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/subcontractor-vs-employee-cra).

## T5018 slips and job costing

The federal **[T5018](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/t5018.html)** obligation applies in Alberta exactly as elsewhere. A business whose main activity is construction, and which pays others for construction services, generally reports those payments. The reporting is only as good as the payables coding underneath it. Separating subtrade labour from materials at entry, and tagging both to a job, produces the slips as a by-product — and produces something more useful besides: a straight answer to which jobs made money. The [T5018 reporting guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t5018-subcontractor-reporting-construction) sets out the mechanics.

## Trucks, tools and the business licence

Work trucks, trailers and larger tools are capital, recovered through capital cost allowance by class, and a vehicle log separating business from personal kilometres is what supports the claim. On the local side, the City of Spruce Grove requires all businesses and individuals providing goods or services in the city to hold a current business licence, so a contractor working jobs inside the city keeps that renewal on the same calendar as the GST and payroll deadlines.

## What is covered

Common questions

## Spruce Grove trades accounting FAQ

**Is there sales tax on materials in Spruce Grove?**

Alberta levies no provincial sales tax, so materials carry GST only, which a registrant recovers through input tax credits. Estimating templates built for PST provinces do not transfer cleanly. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Does an Alberta corporation file a separate provincial return?**

Yes. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 and a separate Alberta AT1. Recently incorporated companies commonly miss the second filing.

**What are the prompt payment deadlines in Alberta?**

Under Alberta’s published rules, an owner must pay a contractor within 28 calendar days of receiving a proper invoice, and a contractor must pay each subcontractor within 7 calendar days of being paid. An unpaid subcontractor can begin an adjudication.

**Do T5018 slips apply to Alberta contractors?**

Yes — it is a federal requirement. A business whose main activity is construction and which pays others for construction services generally reports those payments.

**Do I need a Spruce Grove business licence?**

The City of Spruce Grove requires all businesses and individuals providing goods or services in the city to have a current business licence. It is separate from your CRA, Alberta and WCB-Alberta accounts.

**Do you have an office in Spruce Grove?**

No. The engagement runs remotely by email, e-signature and secure upload. What matters is that the T2, the AT1 and the GST filings are all prepared from the same set of books.

**What does an accountant cost for a Spruce Grove trades business?**

A Spruce Grove address does not change the fee. Monthly bookkeeping starts from $300 a month and a personal return from $100; a corporate return is quoted after we review your enquiry. A single question can go to a 45-minute Advice Call, a flat fee of $200 + GST. Every fee is fixed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with trades outside Spruce Grove itself?**

Yes. Trades businesses in Stony Plain, Parkland County and Acheson are served the same way as those in Spruce Grove, remotely and at the same fixed fees.
