What this is measuring
Statistics Canada publishes counts of businesses with employees by municipality and by employee size. This tool reads those counts and nothing else.
The reference period is 2025-01, from table 33-10-1016-01, retrieved 2026-08-03. Every municipal total shown here matches the figures independently verified on our Fraser Valley Small Business Report.
What this is not measuring
This compares business counts and composition only: how many businesses are your size, not what they earn, pay or are worth.
There is no revenue, margin or salary benchmark here, because no public municipal data exists for them. A tool that offered them would be inventing numbers, and an untraceable benchmark is worse than none.
Two more limits. These are businesses with employees; those without are counted separately, so the true total in each municipality is higher, often substantially. And small counts are withheld for confidentiality — shown as not published, not zero.
How to read your result
Position matters more than raw count. That 929 businesses in Abbotsford employ 10 to 19 people is context; that this size puts you in the upper fifth of employers in your market is what changes how an owner thinks about the next hire. The usual answer to “how to benchmark my business” therefore starts with your position in the size bands, not the raw count.
Operational changes cluster at band boundaries too. Moving from four employees to six is where informal payroll stops working; passing twenty is usually where someone must own scheduling full time.
