Personal tax (T1) · Fort McMurray

Personal tax accountant in Fort McMurray

A Fort McMurray T1 is rarely a single T4. It is a rotation worker whose home is in another province, an incorporated contractor deciding between salary and dividends, a family with rental property in the city, or all three. EverStone prepares those returns remotely. See personal tax services and the Fort McMurray CPA page.

Quick answer: For people who live or work in Fort McMurray, the personal return turns on three questions: which province you were resident in on December 31, how your employer treated camp lodging and travel, and — for incorporated owners — the salary-versus-dividend mix on Alberta’s combined rates. EverStone prepares T1 returns entirely remotely. A basic T1 starts at $100.

Where you live on December 31 decides the provincial tax

Personal income tax in Canada is charged by the province you are resident in on the last day of the year, not by the province where the money was earned. That single rule shapes more Fort McMurray returns than anything else. A heavy-equipment operator who flies in from Newfoundland and Labrador, or drives up from British Columbia, and keeps a home and family there, is usually resident in that province for tax purposes, even after a full year of rotations in Wood Buffalo. The T4 from an Alberta employer may show Alberta withholding, but the return is filed as a resident of the home province, and the balance owing or refund follows from that.

The reverse case matters too. Someone who has moved to Fort McMurray, rents or owns here, has their family here and goes home only for holidays is likely an Alberta resident, whatever their driver’s licence says. Residence is decided on the whole picture — home, spouse and dependants, personal ties — so it deserves a deliberate answer rather than a default. When it is wrong, the return is wrong in a way the CRA can correct years later, and the difference between two provinces’ rates is assessed with interest.

Camp lodging, travel and the special work site rules

Many people working the oil sands live in camp on rotation. Board and lodging provided by an employer is normally a taxable benefit, but the Income Tax Act exempts it where the employment is at a special work site or a remote location and the conditions are met; the employer documents this on form TD4. Transportation to and from the site can be covered the same way. Whether the exemption applied should already be reflected on your T4, but it is worth checking when box amounts do not match what you expected, and when you changed employers or sites during the year.

Employees who pay their own costs are in a different position. Ordinary commuting is personal and not deductible, even when the commute is long. Specific employment expenses can be claimed only where the employer certifies the conditions on form T2200, and they are then claimed on form T777. Tradespeople who must supply their own tools have a separate deduction with its own rules. We look at what your employer actually certified before claiming anything, because an employment-expense claim without a signed T2200 is one of the first things a review disallows.

Northern residents deductions: check, do not assume

The northern residents deductions, claimed on form T2222, reduce tax for people who live in prescribed northern and intermediate zones. Eligibility depends on the specific place you lived, the length of time you lived there and the CRA’s published list of prescribed zones; it is not granted simply because a location feels remote. Fort McMurray, the hamlets in Wood Buffalo and Fort Chipewyan are not all treated alike, and the list is worth checking for your actual address and year. Where a claim applies, it covers a residency deduction and, in some cases, travel benefits; where it does not, claiming it invites a reassessment. We confirm the zone before the line is filled in.

Moving for the work

Moving to Fort McMurray to start a job or a business can make the cost of the move deductible against income earned at the new location, on form T1-M, provided the move brings you sufficiently closer to the new work as the CRA defines it. Eligible costs include transport of household goods, temporary accommodation near the new home for a limited period, and some costs of selling the old home. The deduction is claimed against income at the new location only, so a mid-year move often carries part of the claim forward. Receipts kept at the time of the move are the whole case.

Incorporated owners: salary, dividends and the Alberta rates

For owners of a Wood Buffalo corporation, the personal return is the other half of the corporate one. Salary is deductible to the corporation and taxed personally as employment income. A dividend is paid from income already taxed in the corporation, grossed up on the personal return and reduced by a dividend tax credit. The system aims for the two routes to produce broadly similar total tax, but the alignment is never exact, and its direction depends on the owner’s province of residence and the corporate rate the income bore. Income taxed at Alberta’s 11% combined small-business rate supports non-eligible dividends; income taxed at the 23% general rate can support eligible dividends with a larger credit. See eligible versus non-eligible dividends.

The non-tax factors often decide it. Salary creates RRSP room and CPP contributions, and it is verifiable income for a mortgage lender — relevant to anyone buying in the city. Dividends avoid payroll remittances and can be declared after the year has ended. In a region where income swings with turnaround seasons, mixing the two across years usually beats a fixed formula. See CPP for incorporated owners, and model your own figures with the salary and dividend calculator.

Self-employed returns and the T2125

Unincorporated contractors, owner-operators and side businesses report on form T2125 with the T1. The self-employed filing deadline is June 15, but any balance is still due April 30, and interest runs from then. Vehicle expenses need a log separating business from personal kilometres; home-office costs need the space to qualify; and GST registrants claim the business portion of vehicle and supply costs net of input tax credits. A contractor who earned well during a shutdown season should also expect personal instalment notices the following year. Vehicle and mileage deductions covers the records.

Rental property in Fort McMurray

A good number of owners here rent out a house, a suite or a condo to people working in the region. Rental income is reported on form T776. Mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, repairs and utilities you pay are deductible; capital improvements are not deducted at once but added to the cost of the property. Claiming capital cost allowance on a rental building is allowed but cannot create or increase a rental loss, and it adds recapture when the property is sold, so it is a decision rather than a default. See rental income returns.

The moment there are employees, payroll in Fort McMurray becomes the recurring obligation.

Common questions

Fort McMurray personal tax FAQ

I work in Fort McMurray but my home is in another province. Where do I pay tax?+
Usually in your home province. Provincial tax is charged by your province of residence on December 31, decided by where your home, spouse, dependants and personal ties are. Working rotations in Alberta does not by itself make you an Alberta resident. Ask about your case →
Is camp accommodation a taxable benefit?+
Board and lodging from an employer is normally taxable, but it can be exempt at a special work site or remote location where the conditions are met. The employer documents this on form TD4, and the treatment should show on your T4. If the figures look wrong, it is worth asking before you file.
Can I claim the northern residents deduction?+
Only if you lived in a prescribed northern or intermediate zone for the required period. Eligibility depends on the exact place and is set by the CRA’s published list, so check it for your address and year before claiming on form T2222.
Can I deduct my drive or flight to site?+
Ordinary travel between home and a regular work location is personal. Some employment travel can be claimed where the employer certifies the conditions on form T2200, and an employer can sometimes provide transport to a special work site tax-free. A long commute alone does not create a deduction.
Is salary or dividends better for an Alberta owner?+
There is no universal answer. It depends on your province of residence, the corporate rate the income bore and non-tax factors such as RRSP room, CPP and how a mortgage lender will read your income. Mixing the two across years usually suits income that swings with the work.
Are my moving expenses to Fort McMurray deductible?+
They can be, on form T1-M, if you moved to start work or a business and the move brought you sufficiently closer to the new work location. The deduction is limited to income earned at the new location, so part of it may carry forward to the next year.
What does a personal tax return cost in Fort McMurray?+
The fee is the same in Fort McMurray as anywhere else EverStone works. A basic T1 costs from $100, and a self-employed return with schedules usually costs $250 to $450. The fee is written down before any work. See the published fees.
Do you work with people outside Fort McMurray itself?+
Yes. Because nothing needs a visit, people in Anzac, Fort McKay, Conklin, Janvier, Fort Chipewyan and elsewhere in Wood Buffalo work with us exactly as Fort McMurray clients do: email, video, a secure upload link and the same fixed fees.

Who this is for, and who it is not

This is aimed at a Fort McMurray filer whose return carries real decisions: salary and dividends from a corporation, self-employment, rental income, a move into or out of the region, or a home in one province and work in another. A single T4 with nothing else belongs in free software, and we will point you there rather than send a quote. Everything else is priced from the published fixed fees.

What happens when you get in touch

Fort McMurray files move through three steps, all remote, with the fee fixed at the first.

  1. An email enquiry. We look at how you were paid, where your home is, what changed during the year and what the CRA already shows. The fee follows in writing.
  2. No chasing paper. Our CRA authorization lets us retrieve the T4 and T5 slips filed under your SIN. You provide only what the CRA does not receive, such as rental records or a T2200.
  3. A review, then filing. You see the return before it is sent, with a short written explanation of the balance and of anything to change for next year.
