Trades accountant in Aldergrove

A lot of Aldergrove trades work is run by one person with a truck, a home shop and a route that crosses two municipalities before lunch. The accounting questions that come with that are different from a general contractor's. EverStone is a CPA for contractors and an Aldergrove small-business accountant.
Quick answer: Owner-operator trades businesses based in Aldergrove, British Columbia usually face three decisions before they face a complicated return: whether to incorporate, when GST registration becomes mandatory, and how much of a home shop and work vehicle is genuinely claimable. EverStone works through those and files the returns remotely.
Incorporating is a timing decision, not a status symbol
An unincorporated trade pays tax on every dollar of profit at personal rates in the year it is earned, whether or not that money was withdrawn. A corporation is a separate taxpayer, which means profit left in the business is taxed at corporate rates and the personal tax is deferred until it comes out. That deferral is the whole benefit, and it is worth nothing to an owner who takes out everything they earn. The honest test is therefore not revenue — it is whether profit consistently exceeds what the household actually needs, plus whether liability, contracts or hiring make a separate legal entity useful for reasons that have nothing to do with tax. Incorporating early adds annual filings and cost for a benefit that has not arrived yet. The incorporate or stay a sole proprietor comparison sets out the arithmetic.
GST registration is a threshold, not a choice
Registration becomes mandatory once worldwide taxable revenue passes the small supplier threshold, and the obligation can begin partway through a quarter rather than at a tidy year-end. A trades business that grows through a busy summer can therefore cross the line without noticing, and the amounts it should have been collecting do not disappear because nobody invoiced them. Voluntary registration before the threshold is also worth considering for a trade buying a lot of material, because input tax credits on those purchases are only recoverable once registered. The GST registration guide covers how the threshold is measured.
The home shop, and the part people get wrong
Aldergrove properties often come with an outbuilding that becomes a real working shop — welding, storage, small fabrication. A proportion of the costs of that space can be claimable where it is genuinely used for the business, measured on a defensible basis such as floor area, and the claim is different depending on whether the business is incorporated. What creates trouble is not the claim itself but the absence of any working out: an owner who names a percentage without being able to show how it was derived has nothing to point at when asked. It is also worth understanding how business use of a home interacts with the principal residence rules before the property is ever sold. See home office expenses for incorporated owners.
Crossing three jurisdictions before lunch
A trade based in Aldergrove might start in the Township of Langley, work through Abbotsford and finish in Surrey. For income tax that changes nothing — the corporation files where it is resident and carries on business. What it does change is municipal business licensing, which is set locally and is a genuine cost of operating across boundaries, and it changes the vehicle log, because a driving pattern like that is almost entirely business and almost entirely undocumented. A log that records destination and purpose, kept as it happens, is the only evidence that survives a review. Reconstructed logs are the most commonly rejected item in an owner-operator file. See the vehicle mileage guide.
Paying help without creating a payroll problem
A one-person trade that gets busy usually brings in a hand before it brings in an employee. If that person works set hours, uses the company's tools and has no other customers, the arrangement looks like employment regardless of what the invoice says — and the cost of getting it wrong falls on the payer, in the form of the deductions that should have been withheld. Deciding deliberately, and documenting the reasoning, is far cheaper than defending a default. The subcontractor or employee guide sets out the factors that actually carry weight.
What is covered
One Chartered Professional Accountant handles the whole file:
- Incorporation timing analysis, and the transition if it makes sense
- GST registration, filing and input tax credit review
- Home-shop and vehicle claims with the working papers behind them
- Worker classification before a helper becomes a liability
- T2 or self-employment reporting, and the personal return alongside it
Remote, and there is no Aldergrove office
EverStone has one office, in Abbotsford, and no location in Aldergrove. Everything is handled online — video meetings, e-signature and secure upload — which for a sole operator means the file moves without a lost half-day. Receipts photographed from the truck are as useful as receipts in a shoebox, and considerably easier to find in February.
