Port Coquitlam is the working end of the Tri-Cities. Industrial parks sit along the Fraser and Pitt rivers, and a major rail yard runs through the city. Many owners here run crews, trucks or a shop floor rather than a storefront.
You work with one Chartered Professional Accountant who knows your numbers year-round. Questions come by email, meetings happen by video when they help, documents arrive through a secure upload link, and returns are signed electronically.

What BC adds for a Port Coquitlam business
Provincial rules sit on top of the federal ones, and each has its own registration and calendar.
Two sales taxes
BC charges 5% GST and 7% PST as separate taxes with separate returns. A contractor pays PST on materials installed into a home. GST registration becomes mandatory once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters.
Corporate rates
BC taxes active business income under the small business deduction at 2% and other income at 12%, on a $500,000 limit shared by associated corporations. The figures are on the BC tax facts page.
Payroll layers
WorkSafeBC registration and premiums for every employer, and the employer health tax once BC remuneration passes $1,000,000. BC vacation pay starts at 4% and rises to 6% after five years.
Trades, industrial and logistics: what the books need
Money in a trade or industrial business moves through jobs, loads and equipment. The books have to show which jobs pay and which trucks earn their keep.
For trades and contractors, that means job costing, progress billing, holdbacks and T5018 slips. The T5018 subcontractor tracker helps through the year. See also plumbers and electricians.
For warehouses, shops and carriers, it means tracking fuel, repairs and equipment by unit. A vehicle log supports each vehicle’s business use. Owner-operators can read our page for truckers.
GST and PST for contractors, shops and carriers
The CRA administers GST at 5%; the BC Ministry of Finance administers PST at 7% separately, with its own registration, return and taxability rules.
A renovation contractor usually pays PST on materials installed into a home instead of charging it. A carrier mostly claims GST input tax credits on fuel, repairs and equipment. We file both returns monthly as part of bookkeeping; see GST and PST filing and construction accounting in BC.
Payroll for crews, drivers and warehouse staff
Trades and logistics firms have hourly staff, overtime, apprentices and turnover. Each pay run needs CPP and EI deducted and remittances sent on time, with records of employment when someone leaves.
WorkSafeBC premiums depend on the work your crew does. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping, with T4 slips by the end of February; see payroll services.
Year-end and the T2 for a Port Coquitlam corporation
A BC corporation files one T2 covering federal and provincial tax, plus a BC annual report. The T2 is due six months after year-end, but any balance owing is due two or three months after it.
For a trades firm, year-end means work in progress, holdbacks, equipment additions and shareholder loans. We plan before the year closes, while a bonus, dividend or purchase can still help. See the T2 return page. If the books are behind, catch-up bookkeeping comes first.
Paying yourself from the business
Most incorporated owners take a mix of salary and dividends. Salary builds RRSP room and CPP; dividends skip payroll but add neither. Try the salary vs dividends calculator, then settle the mix with us through tax planning.
