What BC adds for a Port Moody business
Provincial rules sit on top of the federal ones, and each has its own registration and calendar.
Two sales taxes
BC charges 5% GST and 7% PST as separate taxes with separate returns. A restaurant charges none on most food but does on liquor. GST registration becomes mandatory once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters.
Corporate rates
BC taxes active business income under the small business deduction at 2% and other income at 12%, on a $500,000 limit shared by associated corporations. The figures are on the BC tax facts page.
Payroll layers
WorkSafeBC registration and premiums for every employer, and the employer health tax once BC remuneration passes $1,000,000. BC vacation pay starts at 4% and rises to 6% after five years.
Professionals, tech and local shops: what the books need
Port Moody’s small businesses fall into two groups. One sells expertise: consultants, engineers, health professionals and developers. The other sells to people walking in the door.
For incorporated professionals and IT consultants, the work is light on transactions but heavy on planning: what to leave in the company and how to pay yourself.
For tech startups, the issues are SR&ED claims on Form T661, grants that reduce the claim, and stock options for early staff.
For shops, restaurants and breweries, the focus is daily sales, inventory, tips and staff costs, matched to bank deposits monthly.
GST and PST for services, shops and restaurants
The CRA administers GST at 5%; the BC Ministry of Finance administers PST at 7% separately, with its own registration, return and taxability rules.
A consultant’s first question is usually GST, and many register early to claim input tax credits on start-up costs. Shops and restaurants usually need both registrations. We file both returns monthly; see GST and PST filing.
Payroll for small teams, servers and first hires
A professional corporation may pay only the owner; a restaurant may pay a dozen servers sharing tips. Both need CPP and EI deducted, remittances on time and T4 slips by the end of February.
Every BC employer registers with WorkSafeBC. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping; see payroll services.
Year-end and the T2 for a Port Moody corporation
A BC corporation files one T2 covering federal and provincial tax, plus a BC annual report. The T2 is due six months after year-end, but any balance owing is due two or three months after it.
Year-end means the salary-dividend mix and shareholder loans for a professional, and inventory and accruals for a shop or restaurant. We plan before the year closes; see the T2 return page. If the books are behind, catch-up bookkeeping comes first.
Paying yourself from a Port Moody corporation
Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at a combined 11% (9% federal, 2% BC) on the first $500,000. That is why many professionals leave surplus cash in the company.
Salary builds RRSP room and CPP; dividends skip payroll but add neither. Try the salary vs dividends calculator, then settle the mix through tax planning. Still a sole proprietor? Read whether to incorporate.
