What Ontario adds for a Whitby business
Provincial rules sit on top of the federal ones.
One sales tax
Ontario charges a single 13% HST: one registration, one return, and input tax credits that recover both parts of the tax on materials and equipment.
Corporate tax rate
Ontario taxes active small-business income at 2.2% after 30 June 2026 (3.2% before, prorated), plus the 9% federal rate, on a $500,000 business limit. Profit above it, or non-active income, is taxed at the 26.5% combined general rate. See Ontario tax facts.
Employer Health Tax and WSIB
Above the $1,000,000 Ontario payroll exemption, Employer Health Tax applies, and associated employers share one exemption. WSIB is separate again, with its own registration and reporting.

Built for Whitby trades, contractors and professional firms
Whitby has grown steadily as a commuter community east of Toronto, which keeps builders, renovators and service trades busy. Alongside them work incorporated engineers, consultants and health practitioners.
A contractor needs job costing, holdbacks and subcontractor slips handled. A professional needs clean billing records and a sensible owner-pay plan. We handle both at a fixed fee.

Keeping the books for jobs, crews and clients
For a contractor, the books should show profit by job. Materials, labour and subcontractors are coded to each job, and deposits tracked separately. Holdbacks need their own accounts, as the construction holdbacks guide explains.
For a professional firm, unbilled work and receivables must land in the right year. If the books are behind, catch-up bookkeeping brings them current first.
HST on jobs, materials and fees
Once registered, a Whitby business charges 13% HST on most of what it sells. Contractors charge it on labour and materials and claim input tax credits on what they buy. Professionals charge it on fees to most clients.
Common errors are credits missed on unrecorded receipts and HST charged on the wrong amount after a change order. We reconcile HST to the books before every filing.
Payroll, WSIB and subcontractors
Crews raise three payroll questions: who is an employee and who is a subcontractor, how source deductions are remitted, and when WSIB and Employer Health Tax apply. CRA decides worker status on the facts, not the contract title. See subcontractor or employee.
We run pay, remit CPP, EI and income tax, issue T4 slips by the end of February, and prepare the T5018 subcontractor return.
Year-end and paying yourself
The T2 is due six months after year-end, but the balance owing is due before the filing deadline. The Ontario Business Registry annual return is due within six months of year-end. Trucks and tools are claimed through capital cost allowance.
Owner pay is usually a mix of salary and dividends. Salary builds RRSP room and CPP; dividends keep payroll simpler. Try the salary vs dividends calculator, then we confirm the mix before year-end. Professionals with one main client should read about personal services business risk.
