Payroll services in Spruce Grove
Alberta charges no provincial payroll tax, which keeps a Spruce Grove payroll structurally simple. What it does not simplify is a crew that grows in spring and shrinks in winter, overtime on long project days, and a general holiday formula that Alberta shares with no other province. EverStone runs payroll for Spruce Grove businesses remotely.
Quick answer: Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax, so a Spruce Grove employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. For a Spruce Grove employer, payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.
Payroll for Spruce Grove employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filings included.
What Alberta does not charge
Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax. For a Spruce Grove employer, the statutory cost of employing someone is CPP and EI on both the employee and employer side, plus workers’ compensation premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill. That keeps the monthly liability simple, but it does not reduce the work of getting each pay run right, because every remittance, ROE and T4 is built from the same pay-period records.
Seasonal crews and the record of employment
The industries around Spruce Grove move with the seasons and with project schedules. Parkland County lists energy services, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and value-added agriculture among its main sectors, and construction and landscaping work across the region peaks in the warmer months. A Spruce Grove employer in any of those lines tends to hire in spring, run long weeks through summer and autumn, and lay off when the ground freezes or a contract ends.
Each layoff produces a record of employment, with insurable hours and earnings reported by pay period. Employers with clean pay-period records produce a batch of ROEs in an afternoon; employers without them spend a week reconstructing hours while also managing the layoff. The difference is entirely in how the payroll was kept during the busy months. Our guide to the record of employment covers the detail.
General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula
Alberta recognizes nine general holidays, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately preceding the general holiday. The base is not just wages: it includes vacation pay and earlier holiday pay, so a holiday falling soon after another one is calculated on a slightly larger base.
This is a different mechanism from the formulas used in other provinces, and it is one of the places a generic payroll template silently produces the wrong number. For a Spruce Grove crew whose hours swing from week to week, the 4.2% has to be calculated from the actual four-week history, not approximated. The optional holidays should be a written policy, decided in advance, so staff and payroll both know which list applies.
Vacation pay and overtime on long project days
Vacation pay accrues on every pay run and is a real liability on the balance sheet, not something to think about only when someone books time off. Overtime on long days in the field adds a second layer: it has to be identified on each timesheet, paid at the correct rate and included in insurable earnings. A pay run that pays a flat amount regardless of the hours worked is easy to process and hard to defend later. See vacation pay rules for employers.
WCB-Alberta and subtrades
Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by WCB-Alberta, with premiums set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings. Registration and reporting are separate from your CRA accounts, and the annual earnings report draws on the same wage data. Where a Spruce Grove contractor uses subtrades rather than employees, the classification question matters as much as the premium: a worker treated as a contractor who is in substance an employee leaves the payer owing source deductions, penalties and interest.
Remittances, T4s and the year end
Income tax, CPP and EI withheld from each pay are remitted on the schedule the CRA assigns to your payroll account, and late remittances attract penalties even when the amount is small. After the calendar year ends, T4 and T4A slips and summaries are filed by the last day of February. Owners who pay themselves a salary are on the same payroll, which is where the salary and dividend decision becomes a payroll decision.

Remote, and there is no Spruce Grove office
EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Spruce Grove office to visit. Timesheets and payroll changes arrive by email or secure upload, pay runs are approved by e-signature, and questions are answered in writing. Payroll travels well remotely because the inputs are data and the outputs are documents. The deduction calculator is there if you want to check a single cheque before you email.
Who this suits, and who it does not
This is for a Spruce Grove employer with a core staff that grows and shrinks with the season or the contract: a contractor, a landscaping or snow-clearing company, a trucking operator or a shop serving the industrial parks. A large unionized workforce on shift-scheduling software needs a dedicated payroll platform instead, and we will say so in the first reply. The same service is available to Edmonton employers.
Seasonal payrolls swing with the work, so the remittances belong on forecasting the cash it needs.

What happens when you get in touch
Alberta payroll has no provincial tax layer, which makes the first month simpler than most.
- A free first conversation. How many people you pay, how often, and what is behind. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.
- Access, in the first week. We are authorized with the CRA, so the payroll account, remittance history and notices get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are switching firms, your file is requested the same week.
- Current, then ahead. Payroll set up or brought current, any missed remittance dealt with first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
