St. Albert accountant for owner-managed businesses
EverStone CPA works with incorporated and self-employed St. Albert owners entirely online: the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1, monthly bookkeeping, GST and owner-pay planning from one Chartered Professional Accountant, at a fixed fee agreed before any work starts. Owners in Morinville, Gibbons, Bon Accord, Legal and the rest of Sturgeon County work with us the same way.
Who we help here: trades and construction companies, light manufacturers and distributors in the city's business parks, health and professional practices, and the retail and service businesses that serve a largely residential city on Edmonton's northwest edge.
Quick answer: A St. Albert corporation files two income tax returns, the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration, and charges 5% GST with no provincial sales tax. EverStone prepares both returns from one set of books, keeps the GST filings current and plans owner pay, fully online. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

One CPA who knows the whole file
Most St. Albert owners we hear from have the same complaint about their last accountant: they saw them once a year, in a rush, and the advice arrived after the decision had already been made. A corporation's tax result is mostly decided during the year. When equipment is bought, how the owner is paid, whether a big job is billed before or after the year end, all of that is settled long before the T2 is prepared. We work through the year so those questions get asked while there is still a choice.
Every client works with one Chartered Professional Accountant who prepares the returns and answers the email. The firm is fully virtual: there is no St. Albert office, no office visits and no courier. Meetings are by video, documents arrive by secure upload, returns are signed electronically, and the fee is fixed in writing first.

What operating from St. Albert means for your filings
Fewer returns on the sales-tax side, one extra return on the corporate side.
No provincial sales tax
Alberta charges no PST. A St. Albert business selling within the province charges 5% GST and nothing else, holds one sales-tax registration and files one return. The exposure moves to the border: sell into an HST province, or one with its own PST, and the rules of the place of supply follow the customer.
Low corporate rates
Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group. Income above it is taxed at 23% combined, and Alberta's 8% general rate is the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.
A second corporate return
Alberta collects its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files an AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration as well as the T2. Alberta also runs its own instalment stream. Owners who have only ever seen one confirmation number are usually missing a filing, not exempt from it.

Owner and family T1 returns, T2125 for the self-employed, and the salary-versus-dividend decision made before the year ends rather than at filing time.

Payroll
Pay runs, CRA remittances, Alberta general holiday pay, WCB-Alberta reporting, records of employment and the February T4s.
GST filing
GST returns filed on your assigned schedule, with input tax credits claimed against records that would survive a review.
Fractional CFO
Forecasts, cash planning and lender reporting for growing companies that need more than a year-end, part-time and remote.
A residential city with a working industrial edge
St. Albert is mostly homes, shops and services, and that shapes a lot of the files we see: retail and food businesses, salons and studios, clinics and dental offices, consultants who work from home and commute into Edmonton. The other side of the city is its business districts. The City of St. Albert lists Campbell Business Park, Riel Business Park, the South Riel Business District and the newer Lakeview Business District, and names advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, cleantech, health sciences, construction and logistics as the sectors it hosts. South Riel and Campbell sit on Anthony Henday Drive, which is why distributors and contractors working across the Edmonton region locate there.
North of the city, Sturgeon County mixes farmland and acreages with the industrial development of Alberta's Industrial Heartland. Contractors and service companies from St. Albert work those sites, and their books look different from a shop on the main road: equipment that needs a capital cost allowance plan, crews whose numbers change with the project list, and receivables concentrated in a few large customers.

One return filed, the other forgotten
The most common problem in a new St. Albert file is not a complicated one. A corporation has filed its federal T2 every year, on time, and never filed the Alberta AT1. Sometimes the owner incorporated federally or in another province and moved; sometimes a bookkeeper filed the T2 through software and assumed that was the whole job. Nothing about completing the federal return prompts the provincial one, and the gap usually surfaces as correspondence from Alberta long after the T2 was accepted.
The fix is mechanical once it is found. We confirm which years are outstanding, prepare the AT1s from the same trial balances used for the federal returns, and line up the provincial balances and instalments with the federal ones so the two accounts agree going forward. The cost of leaving it is interest that accrues on the provincial side whether or not anyone is looking.
The second most common problem is instalments. A corporation that had a strong year keeps paying instalments at that level into a weaker one, or a growing company does not pay them at all until the interest notice arrives. Because Alberta runs its own instalment stream, a shortfall can exist on one side and not the other. We set both against the year you are actually having.

St. Albert businesses we work with most
Trades and construction. Renovation and residential trades serving St. Albert's neighbourhoods, and commercial and industrial contractors working the business parks and the Heartland. Their files turn on job costing, T5018 subcontractor reporting, holdbacks and Alberta's prompt payment timelines. See trades accounting in St. Albert.
Manufacturing, distribution and logistics. Businesses in Campbell, Riel and South Riel with inventory, equipment and freight. The questions are inventory cut-off at the year end, CCA classes for equipment, and GST on goods shipped to customers in other provinces.
Health and professional practices. Physicians, dentists, physiotherapists, engineers and consultants who have incorporated, where the recurring questions are salary versus dividends and what to do with retained earnings. See professional corporations in St. Albert.
Retail and services. Shops, restaurants, studios and personal services, often with a handful of part-time staff. Payroll, point-of-sale reconciliation and GST are the core of the work.
A local detail worth knowing: the city business licence
The City of St. Albert requires anyone who carries on business in the city to hold a valid business licence, and its licensing pages say that applies whether or not the business is incorporated, and even where a business is not physically located in St. Albert but provides products or services to residents or businesses there. The city states that all licences expire on December 31 and must be renewed for the following year. For a contractor based in Morinville or Legal who takes work in St. Albert, that is worth checking before the first invoice. The licence fee is an ordinary business expense, and we include it in the year-end checklist so it is not missed.
What a St. Albert client's year looks like
Books are kept current monthly. GST is filed on the schedule the CRA assigned, monthly, quarterly or annually. Payroll remittances go on the dates set by your remitter type. Before the fiscal year end we review the year's results, settle the owner's salary and dividend mix and decide on any bonus or equipment purchase while the timing still matters. After the year end, the balance owing is paid within three months for a Canadian-controlled private corporation claiming the small business deduction, and the T2 and AT1 are filed within six. With no provincial sales tax to file, the compliance calendar is genuinely lighter than the same business would have in BC or Ontario.

Working with a virtual accountant in St. Albert
Remote work suits an Alberta file well, because almost everything in it is electronic already. The CRA side runs through Represent a Client and My Business Account. Alberta corporate tax correspondence moved to online mail through TRACS as the default from 1 April 2026, so provincial notices arrive electronically too. Bank and card feeds come into the ledger automatically, and the T2, AT1 and GST returns are all filed electronically.
What you get in place of a nearby office is a CPA who replies. Questions go by email and are answered, usually the same business day. When a conversation is easier, it happens on a video call at a time that suits you rather than during a drive.
