Personal tax accountant for Prince George owners and families
Personal returns in Prince George rarely look like a single T4 and a few receipts. There is camp work with travel, a side business on a T2125, a rental suite, a corporation paying salary and dividends, or a hay field out past Vanderhoof. EverStone prepares T1 returns for Prince George households remotely, at a fee fixed before work starts.
Quick answer: Personal tax returns in Prince George are due April 30, or June 15 if you or your spouse are self-employed, with any balance still due April 30. EverStone prepares T1 returns remotely, including T2125 business income, T776 rentals and owner salary and dividends. Personal tax returns start from $100.
Personal tax returns (T1) start from $100. A self-employed T1 with business schedules is commonly $250 to $450, depending on the records. The fee is fixed in writing before the work starts, and the published fees are on the pricing page.
Camp work, travel and what an employee can deduct
Many Prince George workers are paid on a T4 but spend weeks at a mine, mill shutdown or pipeline camp. Employees cannot deduct ordinary commuting. They can deduct some employment expenses when the employer requires them to pay those costs and signs a T2200. Tradespeople who travel to a temporary work location far from home may also qualify for the labour mobility deduction, which covers travel, meals and lodging in defined cases.
The rules are narrow, so the paperwork matters. A signed T2200, a log of trips and the receipts are what support the claim. We check eligibility before claiming, rather than claiming and hoping. The labour mobility deduction explains who qualifies.
Self-employed income and the June 15 date
A sole proprietor reports business income on form T2125, attached to the T1. That covers a hauler with one truck, a carpenter working alone, a hunting or fishing guide, or someone selling firewood from a lot near Salmon Valley. The return is due June 15 when you or your spouse are self-employed. Any balance owing is still due April 30, and interest runs from then.
Self-employment also means paying both halves of CPP on net income. GST registration becomes mandatory once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters. A sole proprietor with a December 31 year-end files the GST return by June 15 and pays by April 30. The self-employed tax return covers the schedules.
A rental suite or a second property
Basement suites and duplexes are common across Prince George, from the Crescents to College Heights. Rental income goes on form T776. Current expenses such as repairs, insurance, utilities and mortgage interest are deducted in the year. Improvements that last, such as a new roof or a full renovation, are capital and claimed through CCA.
Claiming CCA on a rental cannot create or increase a rental loss. It can also affect what happens when the property is sold. When a suite is in your home, the split between personal and rental use matters for the principal residence exemption. The rental income tax return sets out the calculation.
Farm income around Vanderhoof and the Nechako
Hay, cattle and mixed farms in the Nechako Valley file differently from other businesses. Farming income can use the cash method, so income is reported when received and expenses when paid. That gives some control over the year a large sale lands. Qualified farm property can also qualify for the lifetime capital gains exemption and for intergenerational rollovers when the land passes to the next generation.
Those benefits depend on records kept over many years. We keep the farm schedules consistent and flag succession questions early. Farm succession and the rollover covers the transfer rules.
Owners of a corporation
If you own a Prince George corporation, your personal return depends on what the company paid you. Salary arrives on a T4 and creates RRSP room and CPP pensionable earnings. Dividends arrive on a T5, are grossed up on the return and earn a dividend tax credit. Neither is right in every year. We prepare the T1 with the corporate file, so the split is chosen once and the slips match. Corporate tax in Prince George covers the company side, and RRSP versus dividends covers the trade-off.
Medical travel and the credits northern families miss
Specialist care is not always available close to home in northern BC. Families from Prince George, Quesnel and Mackenzie often travel south for treatment. When equivalent care is not available nearby, the cost of that travel can count toward the medical expense tax credit. In some cases meals and lodging count too, alongside the medical bills themselves.
The claim is often missed because the receipts are scattered across fuel, hotel and parking. Keep the dates, the destination and the reason for each trip. Medical expenses can be claimed for any twelve-month period ending in the tax year, and on either spouse’s return. Choosing the period and the spouse well can raise the credit. The medical expense tax credit explains what qualifies.
RRSP room when income rises and falls
Camp work, overtime and seasonal contracts make income uneven. A big year at a mine site followed by a quiet one is common. RRSP contributions are deductible against income, and the deduction does not have to be taken in the year you contribute. Holding a deduction for a higher-income year can be worth more than using it right away. We look at the next year as well as this one before recommending how much to claim. The current RRSP limit sets the ceiling.
Instalments, notices and the 90-day window
When net tax owing exceeds $3,000 in the current year and in either of the two previous years, the CRA expects personal instalments. They are due March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. Self-employed people and owners paid by dividend meet this quickly, because nothing is withheld at source.
After filing, the notice of assessment is worth reading. If you disagree with it, a notice of objection is due within 90 days. Records should be kept six years. We read your notices through My Business Account authorization and deal with review letters as part of the file. The instalment calculator shows what the CRA will expect.
Remote, and there is no Prince George office
EverStone is a one-CPA firm based in Abbotsford, working with Prince George households remotely. Slips, receipts and statements come in through a secure upload link, which works from a phone at camp. Questions go by email, and a video call is arranged when it helps. The return is approved by e-signature and filed electronically. If you are away on rotation in April, the work does not wait for you to get home.
