A CPA for Brantford manufacturers, logistics firms and trades
Brantford sits on the Grand River and Highway 403, between Hamilton and London. It has deep industrial roots, and its location now draws distribution and warehousing as well. New housing around the city keeps contractors and trades busy.
Most of these businesses are owner-run. One Chartered Professional Accountant knows your numbers year-round. Questions come by email, records by secure upload, and returns are e-signed.

What Ontario adds for a Brantford business
Provincial rules that sit on top of the federal ones.
One sales tax, not two
Ontario charges a single 13% HST: one registration, one return, and input tax credits that recover the tax on materials and equipment. Exporters with zero-rated sales often sit in a refund position.
Corporate tax rate
Ontario taxes active small-business income at 2.2% after 30 June 2026 (3.2% before, prorated), plus the 9% federal rate, on a $500,000 business limit. Profit above it is taxed at the 26.5% combined general rate. See Ontario tax facts.
Employer Health Tax and WSIB
Above the $1,000,000 Ontario payroll exemption, Employer Health Tax applies on top of CPP and EI, and associated employers share one exemption. WSIB is a separate account.

Built for plants, warehouses and job sites
Brantford’s private economy leans on manufacturing: metal and plastics work, food processing and packaging. Highway access brings distribution centres, third-party warehouses and trucking firms. Around them sit the trades and builders working on new homes, renovations and plant maintenance.
A plant lives on inventory and machine time, a carrier on fuel and cost per kilometre, a contractor on job margins and holdbacks. See manufacturer accounting in Hamilton, trucking and logistics accounting and construction and trades accounting.

Inventory, job costing and equipment
For a manufacturer, inventory often moves year-end profit most. Materials, work in progress and finished goods are valued at the lower of cost and net realizable value. The year-end inventory count guide explains the count.
For a contractor, job costing matters more: labour, materials and subcontractors posted to each job, so you can see which ones paid. Machinery, trucks and tools are recovered through capital cost allowance by class, from the date they are available for use.
HST, holdbacks and subcontractors
HST paid on materials, fuel and equipment comes back as input tax credits, as long as each invoice shows the supplier’s registration number. Sales to United States customers are generally zero-rated exports, as HST on exports explains.
Builders face two more items. Holdbacks need tracking as receivables until released. Payments to subcontractors are reported on T5018 slips. We keep both current in the monthly books.
Payroll for shifts, crews and drivers
Plants run shifts, warehouses add peak-season staff, carriers employ drivers, and contractors carry apprentices and crews. Pay runs, remittances, ROEs and T4 slips are included with monthly bookkeeping. See payroll services.
A driver or helper paid as a contractor may be an employee in the CRA’s view, as the contractor or employee guide explains. Owner-operators can start with accounting for truckers.
Year-end and the owner’s pay
The T2 is due six months after year-end, but the balance owing is due two or three months after it. The Ontario Business Registry annual return is due within six months of year-end.
We plan before the year closes: when equipment goes into service, and whether you take salary, dividends or a mix. Where one owner holds several companies, associated corporations share one business limit. The salary vs dividends calculator shows the trade-off.
Lender-ready financial statements come from the same books. If the books are behind, bringing overdue books current comes first. Changing firms is covered on switching accountants.
