Small business accountant in Cochrane, Alberta

EverStone CPA works with incorporated and self-employed Cochrane owners entirely online — corporate tax, the Alberta AT1, bookkeeping, payroll and GST from one Chartered Professional Accountant, at a fee fixed in writing before any work starts. Owners in Bragg Creek, Bearspaw and the rest of Rocky View County are served the same way.

Who we help here: technology and engineering consultancies run from a home office, downtown retailers and professional practices, trades and contractors working the corridor into Calgary, and acreage and ranch owners with a business on the side. Most are owner-managed, many are one or two people, and nearly all of them want the same thing: a CPA who answers and a bill they can predict.

Quick answer: A Cochrane business deals with 5% GST and no provincial sales tax, but an Alberta corporation files two income tax returns: the federal T2 and the provincial AT1. EverStone prepares both, keeps the books and files GST for Cochrane owners entirely online, at a fixed fee quoted first. For a Cochrane business, published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

Why EverStone

An accountant for a town of owner-run businesses

The Town of Cochrane describes its own economy in terms most accountants would recognize at once: information and communications technology, a large home-based business community of engineers, designers and programmers, and a downtown of retailers and professional services. That is an economy of small, owner-managed companies. Very few of them have a finance department, and most of the owners are doing the bookkeeping at night after the real work is finished.

What those businesses need is not a large firm. It is one CPA who knows the file all year, answers an email the same day where possible, and fixes the fee before starting so there is no reason to hesitate before asking a question. Every Cochrane client works with one Chartered Professional Accountant, by video, phone and secure upload, with no office visits.

Alberta tax for a Cochrane business

Fewer returns than most provinces, but not one fewer than you need

The headline is simple. The details are where Cochrane owners who incorporated elsewhere get caught.

No provincial sales tax

Alberta charges no PST at all, so a Cochrane business selling within the province charges 5% GST and nothing else. One registration, one return, and no provincial tax buried in your input costs. The exception arrives at the border: sell into a province with HST or its own PST and the rate follows the customer.

A low corporate rate, on two returns

Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined in Alberta, 9% federal and 2% provincial, on a $500,000 threshold. Income above it is taxed at 23%. Alberta collects its own share, so a corporation files the AT1 alongside the T2.

No employer health tax

Alberta levies no provincial payroll tax. A Cochrane employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums, which keeps a first hire simpler here than in several other provinces. The general holiday pay calculation is the part that still needs care.

Cochrane’s owner-run economy

Accounting built for home offices, main streets and acreages

Cochrane sits at the junction of Highway 1A and Highway 22, about 35 minutes northwest of downtown Calgary, with the Bow River running through the town and the foothills on the horizon. That position shapes the businesses here. Some serve the town itself: the retailers, restaurants and professional offices of a downtown that still reflects its western heritage. Others serve Calgary and the wider region from a home office or a truck, and a third group sits on the county land around the town.

Each of those groups produces a different kind of file. A home-based software or engineering corporation has few assets, concentrated revenue and a home-office claim to get right. A downtown shop has inventory, card settlements and seasonal staff. A contractor has equipment, subtrades and capital cost allowance to time. We build the bookkeeping, GST filing and corporate tax around whichever one you are, not around an average.

The issue we see most often

The home-based corporation that only ever filed one return

A pattern recurs with Cochrane’s home-based corporations. An engineer, designer or developer incorporates, finds a bookkeeping app, files the federal T2 through software or a previous preparer, and assumes the corporate side is done. Two or three years later a letter arrives from Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration about an AT1 that was never filed. The federal return was accepted every year, so nothing ever suggested a second one was due.

The second recurring issue sits beside it. A corporation with one main client, working from a home office, is the textbook profile for personal services business risk. If the CRA treats the corporation as an incorporated employee, the small business deduction goes and most ordinary deductions with it. The facts that decide it, control, tools, risk and the number of clients, are better reviewed before the return is filed than after an assessment arrives.

The third is the home office itself. A corporation can reimburse or rent space from its owner, or the owner can claim employment expenses with the right forms, and each route has different paperwork. Picking one deliberately, recording it, and keeping the square footage and costs on file is cheaper than reconstructing it during a review. We look at all three on the first call for a Cochrane home-based corporation, because they usually travel together.

How it works

Getting started, on your schedule

Three steps, handled securely online around your schedule.

1

Send an enquiry

Tell us about your Cochrane business by email or on a short call, and we come back with a fixed, no-obligation quote in writing.

2

Send your records securely

Share your books and prior filings by secure upload — we take over GST, bookkeeping, the T2 and the AT1 from there.

3

Stay compliant all year

We file on time with the CRA and Alberta, track instalments, and plan owner pay before the year end rather than after it.

Cochrane industries we work with most

Technology and engineering consultancies come first. The Town of Cochrane’s economic development office singles out information and communications technology and home-based professionals as sectors in their own right, and the accounting profile is consistent: a corporation with one or two owners, modest assets, a laptop and a home office, and revenue from a handful of clients. The questions are owner pay, the home office, the PSB test and whether to hold profit in the corporation at the small-business rate.

Retail and professional services make up the second group. A downtown shop or clinic has card processor settlements, inventory or supplies, part-time staff and a lease, which means real bookkeeping and payroll every month. Trades and contractors make up the third: crews that work across Cochrane, Calgary and the county, with vehicles, equipment, subtrades and T5018 reporting. See trades accounting in Cochrane for that side.

The fourth group is on the land around the town. Rocky View County runs its own agriculture programs, and the acreages, ranches and hay operations around Cochrane, Bearspaw and Bragg Creek bring farm income rules most accountants rarely see. See farm and ranch accounting in Cochrane.

The Cochrane business licence

One local obligation sits outside tax. The Town of Cochrane states that all businesses located or operating in Cochrane must hold a current business licence under its Business Licence Bylaw 22/2018. That includes home-based businesses, which take a Home-Based Business licence of one of two types depending on whether clients visit. Licences run on a calendar year and expire December 31, so renewal is worth putting in the same calendar as the year-end tax dates. Licence fees are a deductible business expense, and the receipt belongs in the books with everything else.

How working with a Cochrane business actually runs

Everything is remote, and deliberately so: you get a CPA who replies, not one who is nearby. A first conversation runs by video or phone. Documents move through a secure upload link rather than a courier or a drop-in, and signatures are electronic. Through the year you can email a question and no bill follows it, because the fee is fixed and agreed before any work begins. That matters most for the decisions that arrive mid-year: buying a vehicle, hiring a first employee, taking a second client.

The same CPA handles your file from start to finish, so the person who prepares your return is the person who answers your email. For a Cochrane owner, that removes the drive into Calgary and the hesitation to ask.

What a Cochrane client’s year looks like

Books stay current monthly. GST is filed on the schedule the CRA assigns. Planning happens before the fiscal year-end closes, then the T2 and AT1 follow it, with the balance owing due earlier than the returns themselves. Owner T4 or T5 slips go out after December, and the personal return comes last. With no provincial sales tax and no provincial payroll tax, the compliance calendar is genuinely lighter than in a two-tax province; the AT1 is the one extra item, and it is the one most often missed.

We work with owner-managed businesses across Alberta. See accounting in Alberta for the provincial picture, or the Calgary accountant page for the city next door.

Common questions

Questions from Cochrane business owners

How much does an accountant cost in Cochrane?+
We charge fixed fees, quoted in writing after we review your enquiry, so there are no hourly surprises. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping; corporate returns and year-end statements are quoted individually. Published fees show where each service starts, and a Cochrane address does not change them.
Do you have an office in Cochrane?+
No. EverStone works fully online and has no office in Cochrane. Meetings are by video or phone, documents move by secure upload, and returns are signed electronically. Nothing about a T2, AT1 or GST filing depends on where the accountant sits. Ask about your case →
Does my Cochrane corporation file an Alberta return?+
Yes, if it has a permanent establishment in Alberta. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so the AT1 is filed with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration alongside the federal T2. We prepare both from the same year-end file.
I run my corporation from home in Cochrane. What should I watch?+
Three things: how the home office is claimed and documented, whether one dominant client creates personal services business risk, and the Town of Cochrane’s requirement that home-based businesses hold a current business licence.
Do I charge PST in Cochrane?+
No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only 5% GST applies to sales within the province. Selling into a province with HST or its own PST can bring that province’s rate or registration into play.
Do you work with businesses outside Cochrane itself?+
Yes. Businesses in Bragg Creek, Bearspaw and elsewhere in Rocky View County are served exactly as Cochrane ones are: video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.

On the year-end side, Cochrane financial statements covers compilations for lenders and owners, and how the statements feed both corporate returns.

How it works remotely

Working with a virtual tax accountant in Cochrane

Alberta simplifies one thing and complicates another. There is no provincial sales tax, so a Cochrane corporation deals with GST alone — genuinely less administration. But Alberta administers its own corporate income tax separately from the CRA, which means a provincial return alongside the federal T2 and its own instalment stream to track.

Working with us online means that coordination is handled rather than handed back to you: secure upload links for records, video meetings around your schedule, e-signature approvals, and a single CPA who knows which filing is due when. For Cochrane’s home-based consultancies, the recurring questions are owner pay and the home office; for its shops and contractors, payroll and equipment.

Two service pages go deeper for Cochrane owners: personal tax (T1) in Cochrane, and fractional CFO support in Cochrane. Both are handled remotely.

Two obligations come up often enough with Cochrane businesses to have pages of their own. If you employ anyone, payroll services in Cochrane covers source deductions, WCB-Alberta and Alberta general holiday pay. If you charge sales tax, GST/HST filing in Cochrane covers GST-only filing and input tax credit records.

Remote accounting

The firm operates virtually and serves Cochrane remotely. There is no Cochrane office and no staff based there. Everything runs by video call, phone and secure document exchange, so nothing about the engagement depends on being nearby. The person who answers your question in March is the one who prepared the return in June, which is the part a larger office structure tends to lose.

How a remote engagement works in Alberta

Alberta is a straightforward province for this, and a remote engagement removes the last reason to choose an accountant by driving distance.

  1. Authorization, not paperwork. You authorize us through your CRA My Business Account, a few clicks on your side, no forms in the mail. That lets us see your filings, balances and notices directly rather than asking you to forward them.
  2. Documents move by secure upload link. Bank statements, payroll records and year-end files are sent by secure upload link, never as email attachments. You can send from a phone.
  3. Signatures are electronic. Your T183 and engagement letter are signed in a browser. Nothing is printed, scanned or couriered.
  4. Meetings are video or phone. Year-end review, planning conversations and first enquiries all run this way, on your schedule rather than around a drive down Highway 1A.
  5. Filing is electronic. The T2 goes to the CRA electronically, and the AT1 goes to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration the same way.

What is specific to Alberta

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so there is no PST registration and no provincial sales-tax return — GST alone. What Alberta does have is a separately administered provincial corporate tax, which means an Alberta corporation files the AT1 in addition to the federal T2, and keeps its standing with the Alberta Corporate Registry through an annual return. Those two provincial items are the ones owners who incorporated elsewhere most often miss.

Current Alberta rates and thresholds live on the Alberta tax facts page. Each figure there carries its source and the date it was checked, kept in one place rather than repeated across the site where it would go stale.

Alberta questions we get

Is there any Alberta sales tax to register for?+

No provincial sales tax exists in Alberta, so GST is the only sales-tax registration in play. If you sell into provinces that do have one, place-of-supply rules can still pull you into their systems.

Does Alberta charge an employer health tax?+

No. A Cochrane employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums, with no provincial payroll levy on top.
