GST/HST filing in Grande Prairie
Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so a Grande Prairie business deals with one tax: 5% GST. The filing is simpler than in most provinces. The risk moves somewhere else — into the documents behind input tax credits, and into work delivered across the British Columbia line. EverStone files GST for Grande Prairie businesses remotely.
Quick answer: Grande Prairie businesses charge 5% GST and no provincial sales tax on sales within Alberta, and recover GST paid on business purchases through input tax credits. The risk is in the records behind those credits and in supplies made into British Columbia or other provinces, where a different rate or a separate PST can apply. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

One tax, and where the risk goes instead
With no provincial sales tax, a Grande Prairie GST return looks short: GST collected on sales, input tax credits on purchases, the difference remitted or refunded. Nothing is wrong with that picture. But because the return is short, the CRA’s attention lands on the two lines that move the result, and in an equipment-heavy region, input tax credits are usually the larger one. A service company that buys a new truck, a trailer and a season’s worth of parts and fuel can show a refund position, and refund returns are the ones most often reviewed.
That is not a reason to avoid claiming. It is a reason to file a return where every credit has the document behind it, so a review is an exchange of PDFs rather than a reassessment. What the CRA checks in a GST review sets out what they ask for.
What an input tax credit actually requires
An input tax credit needs documentation that identifies the supplier, including its GST registration number, the date, the amount paid and the GST charged, with more detail required as the purchase gets larger. A card statement is not an invoice. A fuel receipt with the GST number cut off, a parts order paid in cash with no receipt, or a used-equipment purchase from an individual who is not registered all produce credits that do not survive a review. If the supplier is not a registrant, there is no GST to recover, whatever the invoice says.
Input tax credits do not have to be claimed in the period the purchase was made; there is a window to claim them later. That helps when a large purchase was missed, but it is not a substitute for claiming on time. Our input tax credit guide covers the rules in detail.
The complication arrives at the BC line
Grande Prairie is the commercial hub for a trade area that includes northern British Columbia, and many local businesses do regular work there. GST follows the place of supply, which generally follows the customer or where the service is performed. British Columbia charges GST at the same 5%, but it also has its own provincial sales tax, administered separately from the CRA. A Grande Prairie contractor that delivers taxable goods or certain services into BC, or brings equipment into BC for a job, can pick up a BC PST registration and collection obligation without ever opening a BC location.
The fix is to answer the question before mobilising: which customers and jobs are in BC, what is being supplied, and whether a registration is needed. Sales into HST provinces farther east carry a different rate entirely. Place-of-supply rules explain how the rate is decided.
Filing frequency and the timing of refunds
The CRA assigns a reporting period — monthly, quarterly or annual — based on revenue, and a business can elect a more frequent period. For a Grande Prairie company that regularly claims more input tax credits than it collects, because it is buying equipment or building inventory ahead of a season, monthly filing can bring refunds in sooner. For a business that usually owes, annual filing with instalments may suit cash flow better. It is a choice worth making on purpose. See changing your GST filing frequency.
Registration and the small supplier threshold
A business stays a small supplier, not required to register, until its taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Many Grande Prairie businesses register earlier by choice, because their customers are registrants who want GST on the invoice and because registration lets them recover the GST on start-up equipment. Registering early is a decision worth making deliberately, not by accident.
Farm and forestry supplies
Agriculture and forestry are two of the region’s anchor sectors, and some farm products and equipment are zero-rated rather than taxable at 5%. A zero-rated supply still lets the seller claim input tax credits, which is different from an exempt supply, where no credits are available. Farm and forestry operators who sell a mix of zero-rated and taxable products need their sales coded correctly at the invoice. Zero-rated versus exempt supplies explains the difference.

Who this is for, and who it is not
This fits a Grande Prairie registrant that buys equipment and supplies regularly, works for customers outside Alberta, or simply wants GST filed by the CPA who keeps the books. It does not fit a business still under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold that has not decided whether to register: that is a decision worth making deliberately, and worth an enquiry first.
What happens when you get in touch
An Alberta GST file is onboarded the same way as one next door, and on the same fixed fee.
- A free thirty-minute conversation. What you do, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.
- Access, in the first week. We are authorized with the CRA, so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are switching firms, your file is requested the same week.
- Current, then ahead. Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
