Payroll services in Lethbridge

Alberta charges no provincial payroll tax, which makes a Lethbridge payroll structurally simpler than the same payroll in Vancouver or Toronto. What it does not simplify is a workforce that grows for the season and shrinks after it, or a general holiday formula Alberta shares with nobody. EverStone runs payroll for Lethbridge businesses remotely.

Quick answer: Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax, so a Lethbridge employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. Seasonal hiring adds records of employment to the job. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Payroll for Lethbridge employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filings included.

Alberta general holiday pay for a general employee is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday, so the base includes vacation pay and earlier holiday pay rather than wages alone
Alberta’s holiday base includes more than wages.

What a Lethbridge payroll looks like

Lethbridge payrolls come in a few recognizable shapes. Food processors and the businesses that supply them add staff when product arrives and release them when the intake is done. Contractors, landscapers and many trades firms run their biggest crews between spring and fall. Greenhouses, feedlots and farm operations in Lethbridge County hire around their own calendar. Clinics, dental and physiotherapy practices and other health-care employers, in the sector that employs more Lethbridge residents than any other, run steady payrolls with many part-time staff. And in a city with two large post-secondary institutions, retailers and restaurants often rely on students who work part-time through the term and more in summer.

Each shape has its own payroll problem. Seasonal employers produce batches of records of employment. Part-time-heavy employers spend more time on vacation pay and general holiday eligibility. Employers with students handle a constant turnover of TD1 forms, start dates and final pays. A payroll set up once and left alone handles none of these well.

What Alberta does not charge, and what that is worth

Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax of the kind other provinces impose. For a Lethbridge employer, the statutory cost of employing someone is CPP and EI, employee and employer sides, plus WCB-Alberta premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill.

That absence is worth quantifying. A British Columbia employer with $2,000,000 of remuneration pays employer health tax at 1.95% on the entire amount. The same payroll in Lethbridge attracts no equivalent provincial charge at all. For a processor or manufacturer weighing where to add a shift, that is a recurring line item, not a rounding difference. The figures are tabled on the Alberta tax facts page.

General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula

Alberta recognizes nine general holidays, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately preceding the general holiday. The base is not simply wages: it includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, so a holiday falling soon after another is calculated on a slightly larger base.

That is a genuinely different mechanism from the average day’s pay used in British Columbia or the divide-by-twenty formula used in Ontario, and a national payroll template can silently produce the wrong number. It matters most for exactly the employers common in Lethbridge: part-time staff whose hours vary week to week, and seasonal crews whose four-week base changes sharply at the start and end of the season. The optional holidays have to be a written policy, not a decision made in the week the day falls.

Seasonal hiring and records of employment

Every seasonal layoff produces records of employment, with insurable hours and earnings reported by pay period. Employers who keep clean pay-period records produce a batch of ROEs in an afternoon; employers who do not spend days reconstructing them at the same moment they are winding down the season. Vacation pay owed on termination has to be paid out with the final cheque, and it is one of the most common items missed when a crew leaves in a hurry. Vacation pay rules for employers covers the basics.

Seasonal payroll also moves the CRA remittance schedule. An employer’s remitter type is set from past withholdings, so a business that grows sharply can be moved to a more frequent schedule, and missed or late remittances carry penalties of their own. Bonuses paid at the end of a good season have their own withholding method rather than following the ordinary periodic tables.

WCB-Alberta

Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by WCB-Alberta, with premiums set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings. Registration and reporting are separate from your CRA payroll account entirely, but they draw on the same wage data. Where a business has employees in different kinds of work, such as plant workers and office staff, the classification is worth checking, because it sets the rate. Year-end earnings reporting is simplest when the payroll records already separate earnings the way WCB-Alberta needs them.

What the engagement covers

  • Pay runs with Alberta tax tables applied to Alberta employees
  • Income tax, CPP and EI withheld and remitted on your assigned CRA schedule
  • General holiday pay on the Alberta 4.2% basis, including an optional-holiday policy
  • Vacation pay accrued, tracked as a liability and paid out on termination
  • WCB-Alberta registration support and assessable earnings reporting
  • Records of employment for seasonal layoffs, produced from pay-period records
  • T4 and T4A slips and summaries filed by the last day of February

Remote, and there is no Lethbridge office

EverStone is a sole-practitioner CPA firm that works online. There is no Lethbridge office to visit. Lethbridge employers are served entirely online, through email, video calls, secure document exchange and e-signature. Payroll travels well remotely because the inputs are data and the outputs are documents. One accountant holds the file from the first remittance through to the February slips. The deduction calculator is there if you want to check a single cheque first.

Who this suits, and who it does not

This is for a Lethbridge employer with a core staff that grows and shrinks with the season or the order book: a processor, a fabricator, a contractor, a greenhouse, a clinic with a large part-time roster. You want holiday pay worked on Alberta’s formula, ROEs produced quickly and T4s that match the ledger. A large unionized workforce on shift-scheduling software needs a dedicated payroll platform instead, and we will say so in the first reply.

Seasonal payrolls swing with intake and contract timing, so the remittances belong in forecasting the cash it needs.

Common questions

Lethbridge payroll questions

Does Alberta charge an employer health tax?+
No. A Lethbridge employer’s statutory employment costs are CPP and EI on both sides plus WCB-Alberta premiums, with nothing provincial charged on the wage bill itself. Ask about your case → See the published fees.
How is general holiday pay calculated in Alberta?+
At least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the general holiday. The base includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, not just regular wages, which is what distinguishes it from the formulas used in other provinces.
How many general holidays does Alberta have?+
Nine, with four additional optional days an employer may choose to recognize. Because the optional days are elective, they should be set out as a written policy so employees and payroll both know in advance which list applies.
What do I need to do when a seasonal crew is laid off?+
Issue a record of employment for each employee, pay out vacation pay owed with the final cheque, and make sure the last remittance includes the final pays. Clean pay-period records make the ROEs quick; reconstructed ones make them slow and error-prone.
Who administers workers’ compensation in Alberta?+
WCB-Alberta. Premiums are set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings, and registration is separate from your CRA payroll account. The reporting draws on the same wage data but goes to a different body on a different schedule.
Does EverStone have a Lethbridge office?+
No. The firm serves Lethbridge employers remotely by email, video call, secure file exchange and e-signature. Nothing in a payroll engagement requires a physical meeting.
Do you run payroll for employers outside Lethbridge itself?+
Yes. Employers in Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Raymond, Taber and Lethbridge County are served exactly as Lethbridge ones are, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

What happens when you get in touch

Alberta payroll has no provincial tax layer, which makes the first month simpler than most.

  1. A free thirty-minute conversation. What you do, how many people you employ through the year, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.
  2. Access, in the first week. We are authorized with the CRA, so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are switching firms, your file is requested the same week.
  3. Current, then ahead. Payroll set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest first, and the season’s hiring and layoff dates planned before they arrive.
