Personal tax accountant in Lethbridge
A Lethbridge T1 is rarely just a T4. Owners draw salary or dividends from a corporation, farm families report farming income on their own schedule, and plenty of salaried people run a business on the side. EverStone prepares those returns remotely, alongside the corporate file where there is one. See personal tax services and the Lethbridge CPA page.
Quick answer: For a Lethbridge owner, the personal return is where the corporation’s decisions land: salary versus dividends, eligible versus non-eligible dividends, CPP, RRSP room and instalments. AlbertaAlberta’s provincial structure is not the same as BC’s or Ontario’s, so a plan built elsewhere needs re-running. EverStone models the decision and prepares the T1 with the corporate returns, entirely remotely. A basic T1 starts at $100.
Three kinds of Lethbridge return
Personal returns in this region tend to fall into three groups, and each needs something different. The first is the incorporated owner: a processor, contractor, trucker, clinic owner or consultant who pays themselves from a corporation and whose T1 carries T4 or T5 slips from their own company. The second is the farm family, where farming income is reported on form T2042, often by more than one family member, and where land, quota and equipment decisions run across generations. The third is the employee with something on the side: a university or polytechnic staff member who consults, a health-care worker with a small practice, a tradesperson who takes evening jobs, all reporting business income on form T2125 next to their T4.
The rules underneath are federal, with an Alberta layer on top, but the planning is different for each group. That is why a return is priced from what it contains rather than from a flat rate.
The salary-versus-dividend crossover is a combined-rate question
Salary is deductible to the corporation and taxed personally as employment income. A dividend is paid from income already taxed in the corporation, grossed up on the personal return and reduced by a dividend tax credit. The system is designed so the two routes produce broadly similar total tax — the theory of integration — but the alignment is never exact. The direction and size of the gap depend on the owner’s province and on which corporate rate the underlying income bore.
Alberta’s provincial layer applies fewer rate steps across a wide range of income than several other provinces, and it adds no surtax computed on provincial tax. In practice that means the combined marginal rate rises less sharply through the middle range of income. For a Lethbridge owner, the argument for holding personal income down and leaving profit in the corporation purely to save tax is weaker than in some provinces, and the decision turns more on the non-tax factors.
The non-tax factors usually decide it
Salary creates RRSP contribution room and requires CPP contributions, which is a cost to an owner near retirement and a benefit to a younger one building a pension. Salary is verifiable income for a lender, which matters to anyone financing a house, an acreage or more land. Dividends avoid payroll remittance obligations and can be declared after the year is over. None of those are tax arguments, and any of them can outweigh a modest tax difference. See CPP for incorporated owners.
Which dividend matters too
A dividend paid from income taxed at the small business rate is non-eligible, with a smaller gross-up and credit. A dividend paid from income taxed at the general rate can be eligible, with a larger gross-up and credit. Owners often treat “dividend” as one thing, but the personal result differs meaningfully, and which kind is available depends on the corporation’s tax history rather than on preference. A Lethbridge corporation that has grown past the $500,000 business limit may have eligible-dividend capacity the owner has never used. See eligible versus non-eligible dividends.
Farm families and the personal return
Farming income on a T1 follows its own rules. It can be reported on the cash method, which lets a family manage when grain or cattle sales land. A loss year can trigger a mandatory inventory adjustment, and an optional one can smooth income between years. Where farming is not the family’s chief source of income, losses may be restricted. And when land or quota is sold or passed to a child, the lifetime capital gains exemption for qualified farm property and the intergenerational rollover can change the result by a very large amount. Those decisions are made years in advance, not in April. The farm accounting page for Lethbridge covers them in detail.
Side businesses and the T2125
For an employee with a consulting practice or a small trade business on the side, the questions are usually practical: which expenses are deductible, what share of a vehicle or home office can be claimed, and whether the business should register for GST once it passes the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. Records made at the time decide most of them. A mileage log kept weekly, receipts captured when they are paid and a separate bank account make the T2125 a short job rather than an argument.
The decision has a deadline
Salary requires withholding through the year and T4 slips after it, so it is a decision made before the fact. A dividend has more flexibility after year-end but is limited by retained earnings and by split-income rules where it is paid to a family member. Neither is a filing-season decision, and treating it as one removes most of the options before anyone looks at the numbers. Where the CRA expects personal instalments, the amount should follow the year the owner is actually having, not last year’s.
The moment there are employees, payroll in Lethbridge becomes the recurring obligation.

Who this is for, and who it is not
This is aimed at a Lethbridge owner or family whose return carries real decisions: salary and dividends from a corporation, farming or self-employed income, rental or investment income, or a year with a move, a land sale or a handover. A single T4 with nothing else belongs in free software, and we will point you there rather than send a quote. Everything else is priced from the published fixed fees.
What happens when you get in touch
Lethbridge files move through three steps, all remote, with the fee fixed at the first.
- An email enquiry. We look at how you were paid, what changed during the year, and what the CRA already shows. The fee follows in writing.
- No chasing paper. Our CRA authorization lets us retrieve the T4 and T5 slips filed under your SIN. You provide only what the CRA does not receive.
- A review, then filing. You see the return before it is sent, with a short explanation of the balance and of any change to next year’s salary and dividend mix.
