Personal tax accountant in Airdrie

Airdrie returns are rarely just a T4. A commuter household often carries an employment slip from Calgary, a side business run from home, a corporation paying the owner, or a rental suite. EverStone prepares T1 returns for Airdrie owners and families fully online. See personal tax services and the Airdrie CPA page.

Quick answer: An Airdrie T1 is filed by April 30, or June 15 if you or your spouse are self-employed, but any balance is due April 30 either way. For an incorporated owner, the salary-versus-dividend decision turns on Alberta’s provincial layer and has to be made before the year ends. EverStone prepares the personal return alongside the corporate one, remotely. A basic T1 starts at $100.

The returns Airdrie households actually file

The City of Airdrie notes that most of its residents commute south, and that shapes the personal returns we see. A typical file has a T4 from a Calgary employer and something else besides: a T2125 for a consulting or trades business run evenings and weekends, rental income from a basement suite, investment slips, or dividends from a family corporation. Each piece is simple on its own. Together they create the questions worth paying an accountant for — which expenses belong to which income, how the business loss or profit interacts with the employment income, and whether the household is now paying enough tax during the year to avoid instalment reminders.

Because we hold CRA authorization, the T4, T5 and other slips filed under your SIN are retrieved directly. You send only what the CRA does not already have: business records, rental figures, donation and medical receipts, and childcare costs.

Sole proprietors and the T2125

A self-employed Airdrie resident reports business income on form T2125 inside the T1. The filing deadline moves to June 15, but the payment deadline does not; interest on an unpaid balance starts after April 30 regardless. The deductions that matter most for small operators are the ones that need records kept at the time: the business share of a vehicle, supported by a log; the business-use portion of the home, based on the space genuinely used; and tools and equipment, which are claimed through capital cost allowance rather than written off in full. A sole proprietor whose taxable supplies pass $30,000 in four consecutive quarters also has to register for GST, which is one of the triggers that prompts the incorporation conversation.

The City of Airdrie requires a business licence for businesses carried on in the city, and a home business with storage, deliveries, visitors or employees usually needs a development permit as well. We do not file those, but they are worth having in order, because the same facts that decide the permit — how much of the house the business uses, and for what — decide the home-office claim on the T2125.

Salary or dividends: a combined-rate question

For an owner paid by an Airdrie corporation, salary is deductible to the corporation and taxed personally as employment income. A dividend is paid from income already taxed in the company, grossed up on the personal return and reduced by a dividend tax credit. The system aims for the two routes to produce broadly similar total tax, but the alignment is never exact, and the size of the gap depends on the owner’s province and on which corporate rate the income bore.

Alberta applies fewer provincial rate steps across a wide range of income than several other provinces, and adds no surtax computed on provincial tax. The combined marginal rate therefore rises less sharply through the middle range, which narrows the pure tax difference between the routes and makes the non-tax factors decisive. Salary creates RRSP room and CPP entitlement, and it is verifiable income for a mortgage lender — a real consideration in a city where many owners are buying or refinancing a home. Dividends avoid payroll remittances and can be declared after the year is over. See CPP for incorporated owners.

Eligible and non-eligible dividends

A dividend paid out of income taxed at the small business rate is non-eligible, with a smaller gross-up and credit. A dividend paid out of income taxed at the general corporate rate can be eligible, with a larger gross-up and credit. Which one a corporation can pay depends on its own tax history rather than on preference, so the T5 slip and the T1 have to match what the corporate return shows. See eligible versus non-eligible dividends.

The decision has a deadline

A salary requires withholding during the year and a T4 after it, so it is decided before the fact. A dividend has more flexibility after year end but is limited by retained earnings and by split-income rules if it is paid to a spouse or adult child. Neither is a filing-season decision. The useful moment is a few weeks before the corporation’s fiscal year end, which is when we model the mix on the owner’s actual numbers.

Basement suites and rental income

A legal or informal rental suite is common in Airdrie’s newer neighbourhoods, and it changes the return more than owners expect. Rent is reported on a rental statement, with the suite’s share of mortgage interest, property tax, insurance and utilities deducted on a reasonable basis — usually floor area. Repairs are deductible; improvements are capital. Claiming capital cost allowance on the house itself is usually a poor idea, because it can affect the principal residence exemption when the home is sold. The cleanest records are a separate list of suite expenses kept through the year and a note of how the space was divided.

Instalment reminders

When too little tax is withheld at source — typical once a side business, rental or dividend income grows — the CRA starts sending instalment reminders. Paying them avoids interest; ignoring them is expensive. We look at whether the reminders make sense for your expected year and set a schedule you can actually meet.

What it costs

The fee is the same in Airdrie as anywhere else EverStone works. A basic T1 starts from $100, and a self-employed return with schedules usually costs $250 to $450. The fee is written down before any work, from the published fixed fees.

How it works

Three steps, all remote

1

An email enquiry

We look at how you were paid, what changed during the year and what the CRA already shows. The fee follows in writing.

2

No chasing paper

Slips come straight from the CRA. You upload only the records it does not receive, from a phone if that is easier.

3

Review, then filing

You see the return before it is sent, with a short note on the balance and on next year’s salary, dividend or instalment plan.

Common questions

Airdrie personal tax FAQ

What does a personal tax return cost in Airdrie?+
A basic T1 costs from $100, and a self-employed return with schedules usually costs $250 to $450. The fee is fixed in writing before any work starts. See the published fees. Ask about your case →
I work in Calgary and run a side business from home in Airdrie. What do I file?+
One T1 that reports the T4 employment income and the business on form T2125. Because you are self-employed, the filing deadline is June 15, but any balance is still due April 30. Keep the business’s bank account, receipts and vehicle log separate from the start.
Is salary or dividends better for an Alberta owner?+
There is no universal answer. The comparison depends on combined federal and provincial rates and on which corporate rate the income bore. Alberta’s flatter provincial layer narrows the tax gap, so RRSP room, CPP and mortgage qualification often decide it.
Why am I getting instalment reminders?+
Because too little tax was withheld at source in recent years, usually once business, rental or dividend income grows. Paying the reminders avoids interest; we check whether the amounts suit your expected year.
Do you have an Airdrie office?+
No. EverStone is fully virtual. Airdrie returns are prepared remotely, reviewed by email or a short video call, and e-signed.
Do you prepare returns for people outside Airdrie itself?+
Yes. Households in Crossfield, Balzac, Carstairs, Irricana and across Rocky View County work with us exactly as Airdrie clients do, at the same fixed fees.

Who this is for, and who it is not

This is aimed at an Airdrie household whose return carries real decisions: salary and dividends from a corporation, self-employment, rental or investment income, or a year with a move or a sale. A single T4 with nothing else belongs in free software, and we will say so rather than send a quote.
