Small business accountant in Brandon for Westman owners
EverStone CPA helps incorporated businesses in Brandon and across the Westman region with corporate tax, bookkeeping, payroll and sales tax — delivered entirely online by one CPA, at a fixed fee agreed in writing. Owners in Virden, Souris, Carberry and around Shilo are served the same way.
Who we help here: Metal fabricators and processors, agriculture service and supply businesses, trucking and logistics operators, trades contractors, and the professional and health-care practices that serve southwest Manitoba — owners who want one accountant across the T2, the books and Manitoba RST.
Quick answer: A Brandon business deals with two sales taxes — the 5% federal GST and Manitoba’s 7% retail sales tax — on separate registrations, plus a corporate rate of nil provincially on income eligible for the small business deduction. EverStone handles the T2, the GST and RST filings, bookkeeping, payroll and the salary-versus-dividend decision for Brandon owners entirely online, at a fixed fee. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

One accountant for a regional business centre
Brandon is Manitoba’s second-largest city and a service centre for southwest Manitoba and southeast Saskatchewan, so many of the businesses here sell well beyond the city limits. A parts supplier ships to farms across Westman, a fabricator sells into the United States, and a contractor follows the work to Virden or Carberry. We prepare your federal T2 and GST alongside Manitoba’s RST and keep the filings consistent with where the business actually operates. Brandon owners comparing accountants can read the full fixed-fee list on the pricing page before sending a single email.
You work with one Chartered Professional Accountant who stays on your file all year, not only in the weeks before a deadline. Everything runs online by video, phone and secure upload, and every fee is fixed and agreed in writing before work begins.

What is different about a Manitoba business
A nil provincial small-business rate, a separate retail sales tax, and a payroll levy most Brandon employers never reach.
A separate provincial sales tax
Manitoba charges 5% GST plus 7% retail sales tax (RST) as two distinct systems. RST is administered by Manitoba Finance, not the CRA, with its own registration and returns, and RST paid on business inputs is generally a cost rather than a recoverable credit.
Corporate tax rate
Manitoba’s lower corporate rate is nil on income eligible for the small business deduction, up to the $500,000 business limit, so qualifying income carries only the 9% federal rate. General income is taxed at 27% combined.
Payroll levy
The Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy exempts employers with total yearly payroll of $2.5 million or less. Associated companies share that one exemption, which matters for owners who run more than one corporation.
Accounting & tax services for Brandon businesses
Everything an incorporated Brandon business needs, under one roof — delivered online.
Corporate Tax (T2)
T2 returns and year-end statements for Brandon manufacturers, trades and service companies, with the small business deduction protected and CRA correspondence handled as part of the file.
Personal Tax (T1)
Personal and self-employed T1 returns for Brandon owners and their families, with dividends, T4 slips, rental income and Manitoba credits worked through properly.
Bookkeeping & Payroll
Monthly bookkeeping and payroll for Brandon operators, with GST and RST coded apart, remittances on schedule and T4s that agree with the year.
GST / RST Filing
GST and Manitoba’s 7% RST registered, filed and reconciled to your books each period, including the self-assessment that applies to taxable goods bought outside the province.
Year-end Statements
Compiled financial statements for Brandon corporations, prepared from the same closed books as the T2, with the notes a lender or bonding company reads first.
Fractional CFO
Part-time CFO support for growing Brandon firms that need a cash forecast, product or job margins and lender-ready reporting without a full-time hire.
Built around manufacturing, agriculture and the routes that connect them
Brandon’s economic development office names a short list of key sectors: chemical processing, which it describes as the city’s largest industry by employment, metal manufacturing, agriculture and food, transportation, and health care through Prairie Mountain Health’s regional referral centre. The city sits where the Trans-Canada Highway meets Highway 10, with two Class 1 railways and an industrial truck route, and CFB Shilo lies a short drive to the east.
For an accountant that mix means equipment-heavy balance sheets, inventory that has to be counted and valued, freight and fuel costs, seasonal swings tied to the farm year, and sales that cross the Saskatchewan border. We track where the business actually sells and buys so that the RST, GST, payroll and T2 filings reflect it, and growth into a new market does not open a compliance gap.

RST that nobody charged: equipment and supplies bought outside Manitoba
The Manitoba item that most often goes wrong for a Brandon business is not the tax it charges customers. It is the retail sales tax it should have paid itself. Where taxable goods are brought into Manitoba for use in the business and the supplier did not charge RST — common when buying from a Saskatchewan or Alberta dealer, from the United States, or online — the obligation to self-assess and remit falls on the purchaser. Nothing on the invoice flags it.
For a fabricator buying tooling, a contractor picking up a trailer across the border, or a farm-service business ordering parts from an out-of-province supplier, that unrecorded liability can build for years and usually surfaces in a provincial review rather than in the books. GST works differently: it follows the federal rules wherever the purchase is made, and a registrant recovers it as an input tax credit.
The second common problem is treating the two taxes the same way in the ledger. GST paid on inputs comes back as a credit and never reaches the income statement. RST paid on inputs is generally a real cost that belongs inside the expense or the asset. A Brandon business that codes both to one sales-tax account overstates what is coming back and understates what its equipment actually cost, which flows straight into the CCA schedule on the T2.
None of this is unusual; it is the normal cost of buying from the next province over. The risk is the penalty and interest that come with tax that should have been remitted. We review out-of-province purchases each month, code GST and RST separately, and keep both returns reconciled to what actually moved through the business.

Brandon industries we work with most
The Brandon owners we work with span manufacturing and processing, agriculture service and supply, trades and construction, transport, and professional and health-care practices. The practical consequence is that a Brandon file usually carries GST and RST on different frequencies, payroll with its own remittance schedule, and a year-end that depends on equipment and inventory being recorded properly. Getting those cycles aligned is most of what keeps a Manitoba compliance calendar manageable. For builders and trades, see contractor accounting in Brandon; for grain and livestock operations, see farm accounting in Brandon.
The wider region shapes the work too. The federal Prairies economic development agency describes Westman as a diversified area that includes education, agriculture, food processing, manufacturing and petroleum. Virden sits beside the Virden oil field in Manitoba’s southwest oil-producing area, so service and trucking businesses there have equipment and fuel costs that look nothing like a retail store’s. Souris and Carberry are farming communities whose businesses follow the crop year. Shilo households include military and civilian staff, many of whom live in Brandon and commute. All of it is handled remotely.
How working with a Brandon business actually runs
A Brandon client never has to visit anyone. We begin with a phone or video call, your documents come in through a secure upload link rather than a courier, and approvals are signed electronically. When something comes up during the year, such as an RST question or a new hire, you can email and no invoice follows for a quick answer. The fee was fixed in writing before any work, which leaves you free to ask before you decide.
A single CPA carries your file from beginning to end, and the person who prepares your return is the person who answers your emails. For an owner whose day is split between a shop floor, a job site and a farmyard, that removes both the drive and the worry about asking.
What a Brandon client’s year looks like
A Brandon client’s year runs on their fiscal year-end, with GST, RST and payroll filings threaded through it on their own frequencies. We keep the bookkeeping current so those filings are a confirmation rather than a reconstruction, review the salary-and-dividend split each year against actual income, and hold the year-end planning conversation before the year closes. The corporate return is due six months after the year-end; the balance owing is due earlier, which is the deadline most owners are surprised by. Instalments for the year ahead are set from the same numbers.
Owner-managed businesses throughout Manitoba are served the same way. See accounting in Manitoba for the province, or the Winnipeg accountant page for the capital-region version of this service.

Working with a virtual accountant in Brandon
Manitoba businesses carry a two-tax administrative load: GST federally, and the provincial retail sales tax administered by Manitoba Finance, with its own registration and filing schedule. Knowing which of your sales and purchases each one touches is most of the compliance work, and it is the part most often set up wrong at the start. The engagement itself runs entirely online — secure document exchange, video meetings and e-signature — so a Brandon owner deals with the same named CPA all year rather than whoever is free. Manitoba corporate income tax is administered together with the federal return, so the T2 covers both.
Manitoba-specific material, including the retail sales tax layer, sits on the Manitoba business page, and the dated rates are on Manitoba tax facts.

Remote accounting
Accounting for Brandon clients is delivered remotely. There is no Brandon office and no local team. Meetings are virtual, documents are signed electronically, and you deal with the CPA directly rather than an intake desk. Your March question is answered by the same CPA who prepared your June return, which is what a larger office tends to lose.
How a remote engagement works in Manitoba
Manitoba keeps its sales tax separate from the federal system, so the provincial layer here is worth getting right from the start.
- CRA access by authorization. You grant us Represent a Client access in your CRA My Business Account, a short online step with no mail. That lets us read your filings, balances and notices directly instead of relying on forwarded copies.
- Records travel by secure upload. Bank statements, payroll records and year-end files are uploaded through a secure link rather than emailed, and a phone upload is fine.
- Nothing to print. Your engagement letter and T183 are signed electronically in a browser, with no scanning or courier.
- Meetings by phone or video. Planning sessions and the year-end review run at a time you choose, with no trip into town from the farm or the job site.
- E-filing to the usual places. Federal returns reach the CRA electronically, and Manitoba’s own filings, such as RST, go to Manitoba Finance electronically too.
What is specific to Manitoba
Manitoba levies retail sales tax provincially, administered separately from GST with its own registration, returns and rules about what is taxable. That is two sales-tax systems to keep current rather than one. Manitoba also runs a payroll levy on larger employers, and its corporate income tax is collected through the federal T2 rather than filed separately. Corporations also file an Annual Return of Information with the Companies Office, keyed to the month the company was created rather than its fiscal year-end.
Current Manitoba rates and thresholds live on the Manitoba tax facts page. There, every number lists its source and the date it was checked, and holding it in one place keeps the rest of the site from going out of date.
Manitoba questions we get
Do I need to register for RST as well as GST?+
If you sell taxable goods or certain services in Manitoba, yes — RST is a separate provincial registration with its own filing calendar, and it is the one most commonly missed by owners who assume GST covers everything.
Does a remote CPA complicate the provincial filings?+
No. RST returns are filed online with Manitoba Finance, and the process is identical wherever the filer sits.
