Small Business Accountant in Selkirk, Manitoba
EverStone CPA looks after corporate tax, bookkeeping, payroll and sales tax for incorporated and self-employed owners in Selkirk — entirely online, with one Chartered Professional Accountant on the file and a fixed fee agreed before any work starts. Owners in St. Andrews, St. Clements, Lockport and the wider Interlake are served the same way.
Who we help here: trades and contractors, metal and fabrication shops, retailers and service businesses in the city, and home-based owners in the surrounding rural municipalities — people who would rather send an email than lose half a day to an appointment in Winnipeg.
Quick answer: A Selkirk business deals with two sales taxes — the 5% federal GST and Manitoba’s 7% retail sales tax (RST) — on top of the T2 or T1, payroll and CRA instalments. EverStone handles all of it online for Selkirk owners at a fixed fee quoted in writing. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

One accountant for the whole Selkirk file, all year
Selkirk is the regional service centre for a much larger area than the city itself. The City of Selkirk describes itself as the economic hub of the Interlake region, about 20 kilometres north of Winnipeg on Highway 9, and that shows in the businesses here: trades that work across St. Andrews and St. Clements, shops and services drawing customers from the surrounding municipalities, and a steel and metal-working base the city itself calls out as part of its economy. Most of those owners need the same handful of things done properly — the corporate return, clean books, payroll, and GST and RST filed on time.
With EverStone a Selkirk owner deals with one Chartered Professional Accountant who prepares the return, answers the email and keeps the calendar, rather than whoever happens to be free. Everything is online: secure upload, e-signature and video meetings when a conversation is easier than a message. There is no office in Selkirk, and nothing about the work needs one. The full fixed-fee list is on the pricing page before you send anything.

Three Manitoba rules that shape every Selkirk file
The federal returns are the same everywhere. These are the provincial pieces that change the numbers.
A nil small-business rate
Manitoba’s lower corporate rate is nil, so active business income eligible for the small business deduction carries only the 9% federal rate, up to the $500,000 business limit. Income above the limit is taxed at 27% combined. Keeping income on the qualifying side matters more here than almost anywhere.
RST beside GST
Manitoba charges 5% GST plus 7% retail sales tax. RST is administered by Manitoba Finance, not the CRA, with its own registration and returns. GST paid on inputs comes back as input tax credits; RST paid on inputs is generally a cost.
A payroll levy most never reach
The Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy exempts employers with total yearly payroll of $2.5 million or less. Associated companies share that one exemption, which is worth knowing for an owner with more than one corporation.

A regional centre, with industry and trades behind it
The City of Selkirk positions itself as the shopping and service hub for a trading area well beyond its own boundaries, with access to major highways, rail spur lines and the airport. It also points to steady residential growth — new single-family homes, apartments and condos — and expanding business and industrial areas. For an accountant, that mix translates into a few recognisable files: contractors and trades building and servicing homes across the region, metal-working and fabrication shops tied to the city’s steel industry, retailers and personal-service businesses, and a large number of home-based owners in St. Andrews and St. Clements.
Each of those has a different pressure point. Trades need T5018 reporting and instalments that fit a seasonal year. Shops need inventory and equipment handled properly at year-end. Retailers need RST collected on the right items. We set the file up around how your business actually earns money, not around a generic checklist. Contractors in Selkirk and Selkirk manufacturers each have their own page.

RST nobody charged you, and the shareholder account nobody reconciled
Two problems turn up in Selkirk files more than any others, and neither is exotic. The first is Manitoba RST on purchases. When a business brings taxable goods into Manitoba for its own use and the supplier did not charge RST — common when tools, parts or equipment are ordered online or from a supplier in another province — the obligation to self-assess and remit the tax falls on the buyer. Nothing on the invoice says so. Over a few years those purchases build into a liability that usually surfaces in a provincial review rather than in the books.
The second is the shareholder loan account. In an owner-managed corporation, personal spending paid from the business account and business costs paid personally both land there. If the account is not reconciled each year, the owner can end up with a debit balance that the CRA treats as income if it is not repaid within the time allowed. It is easy to prevent with a monthly review and very tedious to unpick after three years.
We build the RST check into how out-of-province purchases are coded, keep the shareholder account reconciled every month, and review the salary-and-dividend mix with you before the corporate year closes, when there is still time to change it. Salary versus dividends sets out how that decision works on real numbers.

Selkirk industries we work with most
The construction and trades side is the largest share of what we see from the Selkirk area. Residential growth in the city and the rural municipalities around it keeps carpenters, electricians, plumbers, excavators and finishing trades busy, and those businesses share a pattern: income concentrated in the building season, subcontractors who need T5018 slips, equipment bought in a good year, and RST that depends on whether the contractor is selling materials or installing them into real property. Those are covered on the contractor accountant in Selkirk page.
Selkirk’s steel industry anchors a second group: fabrication, machining, welding and metal-supply businesses, many of them small corporations with real inventory and expensive equipment. Their year-end turns on work-in-progress valuation, CCA classes and whether a machinery purchase qualifies for an RST exemption. A third group is retail and services in the city itself — the businesses that make Selkirk a shopping and service centre for the region — where the work is mostly monthly bookkeeping, payroll and getting RST right on what is sold.
How working with a Selkirk business actually runs
A Selkirk client never has to drive anywhere. The first conversation is an email or a short video call, records arrive through a secure upload link, and the engagement letter and the T183 authorization are signed electronically. When something comes up during the year — a new hire, a CRA letter, a question about whether to buy a truck before year-end — you send it to the same CPA who prepares your return, and no extra invoice follows a reasonable question. The fee was fixed in writing before any work began.
That matters for owners in Lockport, St. Andrews or St. Clements as much as for those in town. The only thing that changes with distance is how the paper moves, and nothing moves on paper.
What a Selkirk client’s year looks like
A corporate client’s year runs on its fiscal year-end. The books are closed monthly, so GST and RST returns are confirmations rather than reconstructions, and payroll remittances are tied to the payroll records each month. Before the year closes we review income against the business limit, the salary-and-dividend split and any planned equipment purchases. After it closes, the balance owing is due three months later for a Canadian-controlled private corporation claiming the small business deduction, and the T2 itself six months later. Corporate tax instalments explains when the CRA expects payments during the year as well.

Working with a virtual accountant in Selkirk
Manitoba businesses carry a two-tax administrative load: GST federally, and retail sales tax administered by Manitoba Finance separately, with its own registration and filing schedule. Knowing which of your sales and purchases each one touches is most of the compliance work, and it is the part most often set up wrong at the start. The engagement itself runs online — secure document exchange, video meetings and e-signature — so a Selkirk owner deals with the same named CPA all year. Manitoba corporate income tax is collected with the federal return, so the T2 covers both.

Remote accounting
Accounting for Selkirk clients is delivered remotely. There is no Selkirk office and no local team. Meetings are virtual, documents are signed electronically, and you deal with the CPA directly rather than an intake desk. The question you send in March is answered by the same CPA who prepared your return the previous June.
How a remote engagement works in Manitoba
Manitoba keeps its sales tax separate from the federal system, so there are two sales tax accounts to keep current rather than one.
- CRA access by authorization. You grant Represent a Client access in your CRA My Business Account, a short online step. That lets us see filings, balances and notices directly.
- Records travel by secure upload. Bank statements, payroll records and year-end files come through a secure link, and a phone photo of a receipt is fine.
- Nothing to print. The engagement letter and T183 are signed electronically in a browser.
- Meetings by phone or video. Planning sessions and the year-end review run at a time you choose.
- E-filing to the usual places. Federal returns go to the CRA electronically, and Manitoba’s own filings, such as RST, go to the province electronically too.
What is specific to Manitoba
Manitoba levies retail sales tax provincially, administered separately from GST. It also runs the Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy on larger payrolls, and its corporate income tax is collected through the federal T2 rather than filed separately. Corporations also file an Annual Return of Information with the Companies Office, keyed to the month the company was created rather than its fiscal year-end.
Current Manitoba rates and thresholds live on the Manitoba tax facts page, where every number lists its source and the date it was checked.
