GST/HST filing in Brampton
Ontario folded its provincial sales tax into the federal one, so a Brampton business files a single 13% return and recovers the tax it pays on inputs. For a business buying materials, fuel and equipment, the work is in claiming every credit and charging the right rate on goods that leave the province. EverStone files HST for Brampton businesses remotely. See the Brampton accounting page.
Quick answer: Brampton businesses charge Ontario’s single 13% harmonized sales tax, made up of a 5% federal component and an 8% provincial component, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. There is no separate Ontario registration and no non-recoverable provincial layer, so tax paid on business inputs is fully claimable. For a Brampton business, GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.
The work covers the GST/HST return (the GST34), input tax credits, the filing frequency, instalments where they apply and the notice of assessment that follows.
One tax, one registration, one return
The 13% HST is a single tax comprising a 5% federal component and an 8% provincial component, collected and administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. There is no separate Ontario registration, no separate provincial return, and no provincial audit body to satisfy alongside the federal one. A Brampton business registers once, receives one business number account for GST/HST, and files one return per reporting period.
The more important consequence is on the purchasing side. In a harmonized province the entire 13% paid on business inputs is recoverable through input tax credits, not just the federal 5%. A Brampton manufacturer buying raw materials, a food processor buying packaging and refrigeration, or a carrier buying fuel, tires and repairs carries no embedded provincial sales tax in its cost base. That is genuinely different from operating in a province that runs a separate retail sales tax, where the provincial layer sticks to many inputs and quietly compresses margin. The rate and its composition are tabled with the source on the Ontario tax facts page.
Why HST matters more for businesses that move goods
Invest Brampton, the city’s economic development office, names advanced manufacturing as Brampton’s largest employment sector, lists food and beverage processing and logistics among its key sectors, and points to the CN intermodal terminal and the city’s closeness to Pearson airport. Businesses in those sectors share an HST profile: high volumes of taxable purchases, large equipment buys, and customers spread well beyond Peel. That makes two things matter more than they would for a local service business.
The first is the size of the input tax credit side. When a business spends heavily on materials and equipment, the credits on a single return can be larger than the tax collected, and a refund return is more likely to draw a CRA review. Every credit needs a supplier invoice showing the supplier’s GST/HST registration number, and a refund claim is only as safe as the invoices behind it. Input tax credits sets out what documentation the CRA expects.
The second is where the goods go. HST follows the place of supply, not the seller’s address. Goods delivered to a customer in another province carry that province’s rate — 5% GST alone in a province without HST, or a different harmonized rate in another HST province — and goods exported outside Canada are generally zero-rated, with the export documentation to prove it. A Brampton distributor that charges 13% on everything is overcharging some customers and, sometimes, under-collecting on others.
Filing frequency and the refund timeline
The CRA assigns a reporting period — monthly, quarterly or annual — based mainly on annual taxable sales, and a business can usually elect a shorter period than the one assigned. For a Brampton business that regularly claims more input tax credits than it collects, monthly filing brings refunds in sooner and keeps working capital out of the CRA’s hands. For a business that usually owes, a longer period holds the cash longer but makes it easier to spend the HST before it is due. The right answer depends on which way your returns usually go, and it is worth revisiting when the business changes.
Registration itself becomes mandatory once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters. New businesses often register earlier on purpose, because a registrant can claim credits on start-up purchases such as equipment and fit-out that a non-registrant simply absorbs.
The Quick Method arithmetic looks different at 13%
The Quick Method lets an eligible registrant remit a flat percentage of tax-included sales instead of tracking input tax credits on day-to-day operating purchases. You continue to charge customers the normal rate; what changes is how the remittance is calculated. Whether it pays turns on a single question: how much tax do you actually pay on operating inputs? A service business with few purchases typically remits less under the Quick Method. A manufacturer, distributor or carrier with heavy operating purchases usually does worse, because the credits it gives up are large. Significant capital purchases are generally still claimable separately. The Quick Method guide works through the arithmetic, and the comparison calculator runs it on your numbers.
Related companies, and the election that stops tax circulating
Family-owned Brampton businesses often run as more than one company: an operating company, a company that owns the building or the trucks and charges rent to the operator, sometimes a separate company for a second location. Each intercompany charge normally carries HST, which the recipient then claims back. The tax nets to nothing across the group and yet moves real cash between entities and across reporting periods.
Where the conditions are met, closely related corporations can elect to treat certain supplies between them as made for no consideration, which removes the tax from those intercompany charges entirely. It is a filing with real eligibility requirements rather than a default, and it does not apply to every transaction between related parties. For a group making regular intercompany charges, it is worth a look.
