Personal tax returns for Campbell River owners and families
A Campbell River T1 often has more going on than a single T4: dividends from a family company, a share of a fishing season, a guiding or charter sideline, a rental suite, or months spent working at a remote camp or fish farm. EverStone prepares personal returns for Campbell River residents remotely, with personal tax returns from $100.
Quick answer: EverStone prepares T1 returns for Campbell River business owners, the self-employed, fishers, landlords and retirees, by email and secure upload. A simple personal return starts at $100. A self-employed T1 with business schedules is commonly $250–$450. The return is due April 30, or June 15 if you or your spouse are self-employed, with any balance still due April 30.
Personal tax for a Campbell River household is quoted as a fixed fee before work starts, and the fee covers questions through the year. If you own a company, the T1 is prepared alongside the corporate return so owner pay is decided once. Published fees are on the pricing page.
Owners and workers across Campbell River’s main industries
The City of Campbell River names forestry and aquaculture as its industrial base, with fishing, tourism and a growing technology, health and transportation sector around them. Most of our Campbell River T1 work is for people who own or work in one of those trades, and each brings its own personal-tax pattern.
- Fishers and crew: fishing income on the T1, T4F slips for crew shares, and EI fishing benefits on a T4E.
- Contractors: sole proprietors with T5018 income to reconcile, or incorporated owners paid by salary and dividend.
- Tradespeople: a T2125 with a work van, tools and the vehicle log behind them.
- Log truck and freight drivers: owner-operators on a T2125 with fuel, CCA on the truck and meal claims.
- Restaurant owners and staff: tips, seasonal income and the owner’s draw.
When your company pays you
An incorporated owner’s T1 depends on decisions made in the company. Salary arrives on a T4, builds RRSP room and carries CPP. Dividends arrive on a T5, with a gross-up and a dividend tax credit that make the taxable amount larger than the cash. The right blend depends on the year’s profit, your other income and what you want to put into an RRSP. We prepare both returns, so the choice is made with the whole picture. The salary vs dividends calculator shows the trade-off.
If the company paid personal costs during the year, the shareholder loan account needs clearing before year-end. A balance left too long can end up taxed as your income, which is the most avoidable surprise on an owner’s return.
Family members are part of the same picture. A spouse or adult child who genuinely works in the business can be paid a reasonable salary for that work. Dividends to family members who do not work in it can fall under the tax on split income. We look at each person’s return together, so the household result is what gets planned.
Self-employed, and the T2125
A sole proprietor reports business income on form T2125 inside the T1. That covers a fishing guide, a small charter operator, a carpenter working on renovations in Willow Point or a consultant working from home. Every deductible cost needs a record: fuel and vehicle costs split by a log, tools, phone, home office and supplies. Equipment and boats are claimed through CCA rather than expensed. Self-employed Campbell River residents also pay both halves of CPP on their net earnings, which surprises people in their first year.
Once net tax owing passes $3,000 in the current year and either of the two previous years, the CRA expects instalments on March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. The tax instalment calculator estimates them. Our self-employed tax return page sets out what we need.
GST is the other first-year trap. A sole proprietor must register once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters, and the GST return then runs on its own calendar. A sole proprietor with a December year-end files the annual GST return by June 15 but pays by April 30, the same split as the T1. Registering a little early can make sense when you buy a boat or equipment, because input tax credits then recover the GST you paid.
Fishing income and EI fishing benefits
A self-employed fisher reports fishing income on the T1 and can use the cash method, so income counts when received and expenses when paid. Crew paid on shares receive a T4F slip rather than a T4. In the off-season, many fishers claim EI fishing benefits, which are taxable and arrive on a T4E. Tax withheld from those benefits often does not cover the full amount, so a balance can appear on April 30. Planning for it in the autumn, when settlements arrive, avoids a scramble in spring. The fishing accountant page covers the business side.
A charter or guiding business is different. Taking paying guests out to fish is a service business rather than a fishing business, so the cash method and the fishing slips generally do not apply, and the income goes on a T2125 like any other self-employment.
Working away from home
Plenty of Campbell River residents work at logging camps, remote fish-farm sites or job sites up the coast, or drive long distances for work. Employees generally cannot deduct their travel unless the employer requires it and signs a T2200 confirming the conditions. Board and lodging provided at a remote work site can be a non-taxable benefit in some situations, which shows on the T4 rather than as a deduction. Tradespeople who move temporarily for work may qualify for the labour mobility deduction. Each depends on facts we confirm before claiming.
Rental suites and second properties
A basement suite in town, a rental house in Willow Point or a cabin on Quadra Island is reported on form T776. Rent is income. Mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, repairs and utilities you pay are generally deductible against it. Improvements that last are capital and go through CCA, which also needs care because claiming it can produce recapture when you sell. Current versus capital expenses explains the line. A principal residence with a rented suite raises its own questions when the house is sold, and a short-term rental used by visitors in the summer may also bring GST questions once it is run like a business.
Retirees in Campbell River
Retirement returns are where small elections matter. Eligible pension income can be split with a spouse, which can lower the combined tax and protect OAS. RRIF withdrawals, the timing of CPP and OAS, and medical expenses claimed in the right twelve-month window all change the result. Pension income splitting and OAS clawback planning cover the main moves.
