Payroll services in Langford
Langford employers tend to hire in one of three shapes: a construction crew that grows with the building season, a kitchen full of part-time staff earning tips, or a shop that adds students before the holidays. Each one strains a different part of the payroll. EverStone runs payroll for Langford businesses remotely, on a written scope.
Quick answer: A Langford employer withholds CPP, EI premiums and income tax from every pay and remits them on the schedule the CRA assigns. It also registers with WorkSafeBC, follows BC employment standards on vacation and holiday pay, and files T4 slips by the last day of February. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.
Payroll covers the source deductions for CPP, EI premiums and income tax, the remittances to the CRA, the year-end T4 and T4A slips, and access through My Business Account.

Crews, kitchens and shop floors
A Westshore construction company might run two people through the winter and eight by summer, as framing and finishing work picks up on the new subdivisions. Hours vary week to week, overtime is common, and the payroll has to keep up with people starting and leaving. Employees and subcontractors also sit side by side on the same site, which makes classification a live question. Contractor accounting in Langford covers the subcontractor side.
Restaurants run the opposite pattern: many part-time staff, irregular shifts and tips. Tips the employer controls, by pooling them or deciding the split, generally go through payroll with deductions; see restaurant accounting in Langford. Retailers add short-term staff for the holiday season and lose them in January, which means more records of employment than headcount suggests. See retail accounting in Langford.
Source deductions and remittances
Every pay run withholds income tax, CPP contributions and EI premiums, and the employer adds its own CPP and EI share on top. Those amounts are held in trust for the CRA and remitted on the schedule assigned to your payroll account, which for most small employers is monthly. Penalties attach to late or short remittances themselves, not just to the return, so a remittance missed in a tight month costs more than the interest.
We calculate each pay, reconcile the payroll liability accounts to the CRA statement monthly, and keep the PD7A remittance voucher amounts matched to the books. The payroll remittance calendar shows the dates by schedule.
Paying yourself through the payroll
Many Langford owners are also the company’s first employee. A salary to the owner goes through the same payroll, with income tax and CPP withheld and a T4 at year end, and it creates RRSP room that dividends do not. An owner who controls the corporation is generally not in insurable employment, so EI premiums are usually not deducted from that salary. Getting that setting wrong at the start means a year of premiums to recover later. The salary-versus-dividends calculator compares the two ways of paying yourself.
BC employment standards that catch new employers
British Columbia sets the rules for pay a Langford employer owes beyond wages. Vacation pay is at least 4% of total wages, rising to 6% after five consecutive years with the same employer. A statutory holiday is paid as an average day’s pay to staff who qualify, with a premium if they work it. When employment ends, final pay is due within 48 hours if the employer ends it.
New employers most often miss the holiday pay calculation for part-time staff and the 48-hour final pay rule. Our BC stat holiday pay calculator does the sums, and the guide to vacation pay rules sets out the accrual.
WorkSafeBC and the employer health tax
An employer in BC registers with WorkSafeBC and reports assessable payroll, at a premium rate set by the classification unit for the work actually done. A builder doing both new construction and renovation should check that each kind of work is reported in the right unit. When you pay subcontractors, a clearance letter confirms their coverage is in place, so their premiums do not fall back on you. See WorkSafeBC registration.
The BC employer health tax applies once annual BC remuneration exceeds $1,000,000, and associated employers share the exemption. Most Langford employers are well below it, but a contractor group with several companies should add their payrolls together before deciding. The rates are on the BC tax facts page.
Year-end slips and records of employment
T4 slips report each employee’s pay and deductions for the calendar year and are due by the last day of February, along with T4A slips for certain other payments. A record of employment is issued when an employee has an interruption of earnings, such as a layoff at the end of the building season or a student leaving in January. Seasonal employers issue a lot of them, and each one has to agree with the payroll. The payroll year-end checklist lists what to reconcile before the slips go out.

Who this is for, and who it is not
This suits a Langford employer with a handful of staff up to a few dozen: a crew, a kitchen or a shop. You want each pay right, the remittances on time and T4s that agree with the books. A large unionized shift workforce needs a dedicated payroll platform instead, and we will point you to one. For anything short of that, the fee is agreed before work starts.

Remote payroll from Abbotsford
The practice is based in Abbotsford, on the mainland side of the Strait of Georgia, and Langford payrolls run online. There is no Langford office and no local staff. Timesheets, TD1 forms and approvals move through a secure upload link and e-signature, and pay runs on the same Pacific-time schedule your staff already expect.
When a new hire starts on a Monday, the forms can be signed on a phone that morning. When someone leaves on a Friday, the final pay and the record of employment are prepared from the same file, so the 48-hour rule is met without anyone driving anywhere.
The year end this all feeds into is the corporate tax return in Langford, and the employee side of a household return is covered under personal tax in Langford.
