Payroll services in Red Deer

Alberta charges no provincial payroll tax, which makes a Red Deer payroll structurally simpler than the same payroll in Vancouver or Winnipeg. What it does not make simpler is general holiday pay, which uses a formula Alberta shares with nobody, or the records of employment that follow every seasonal layoff. EverStone runs payroll for Red Deer businesses remotely.

Quick answer: Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax, so a Red Deer employer’s statutory costs are CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. Alberta general holiday pay is at least 4.2% of wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. Payroll is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Payroll for Red Deer employers is part of our monthly package, which starts from $300 a month with the bookkeeping and GST filings included.

Who employs people in Red Deer

The City of Red Deer lists health care and social assistance, retail trade, construction, oil and gas, accommodation and food services, manufacturing and educational services among its key industries by labour force. For payroll, those fall into three patterns. Clinics, pharmacies, dental offices and care providers run steady salaried and hourly staff with regular vacation and holiday entitlements. Retailers, restaurants and hotels run part-time and shift staff whose hours change every week, often with tips. And construction, fabrication and oilfield service companies run crews that expand and contract with the work, which means hiring in bursts and issuing records of employment when a job ends.

Each pattern breaks a payroll in a different place, and a payroll set up for one usually mishandles the others. We set the payroll up for the pattern you actually have.

What Alberta does not charge, and what that is worth

Alberta levies no employer payroll health tax. For a Red Deer employer, the statutory cost of employing someone is federal — CPP and EI on both the employee and employer side — plus workers’ compensation premiums. Nothing provincial is layered on top of the wage bill.

That absence is worth quantifying rather than filing away as a general advantage. A British Columbia employer with $2,000,000 of remuneration pays employer health tax at 1.95% on the entire amount. The identical payroll in Red Deer attracts no equivalent provincial charge at all. For a company deciding where to place a growing team, or one that already employs people on both sides of the Rockies, that is a recurring line item rather than a rounding difference. The figures are tabled on the Alberta tax facts page.

General holiday pay: Alberta’s 4.2% formula

Where Alberta is not simpler is the holiday calculation. Alberta recognizes nine general holidays, with four further optional days an employer may choose to treat as general holidays. General holiday pay for a general employee is at least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the holiday. The base is not just wages: it includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, so a holiday falling soon after another is calculated on a slightly larger base.

That is a different mechanism from the average day’s pay used in British Columbia or the divide-by-twenty formula used in Ontario, and it is one of the places a national payroll template quietly produces the wrong number. It matters most for Red Deer employers with variable hours: a restaurant whose server worked double shifts in the run-up to a long weekend, or a crew that worked overtime on a shutdown. The optional holidays should be a written policy, decided in advance rather than in the week the day falls. Statutory holiday pay for employers compares the provincial rules.

Remittances on the schedule the CRA assigns

Income tax, CPP and EI withheld from each pay are remitted to the CRA on the schedule assigned to your payroll program account, and the employer’s own CPP and EI go with them. A new employer usually starts on a monthly schedule; larger employers remit more often. Late remittances carry penalties that apply even when the amounts are eventually paid in full, and they are among the easiest penalties to avoid. Payroll remittances and the RP account explains how the schedules work.

WCB-Alberta and the seasonal payroll

Workers’ compensation in Alberta is administered by WCB-Alberta, with premiums set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings. Registration and reporting are separate from your CRA accounts. A Red Deer company that does both fabrication and field installation, or both retail and delivery, needs its classification checked against what the workers actually do.

The other feature worth planning for is volatility. Construction and oilfield service crews in central Alberta grow and shrink with projects, weather and access. Each contraction produces a batch of records of employment, each needing insurable hours and earnings by pay period. Employers with clean pay-period records produce them in an afternoon; employers without them spend a week reconstructing hours while also managing the layoff. Bonuses and retroactive increases add to it, because they have their own withholding method rather than following the ordinary tables.

Tips, benefits and owner pay

Restaurants and salons have tips to deal with, and the treatment depends on whether the employer controls their distribution. Health practices often provide benefits, some of which are taxable and have to run through payroll. And incorporated owners who pay themselves a salary are employees of their own corporation, with source deductions, remittances and a T4 like anyone else. Each is a small rule that a payroll gets wrong for a whole year if it is set up wrongly once. Taxable and non-taxable benefits covers the common cases.

What the engagement covers

  • Pay runs with Alberta tax tables applied to Alberta employees
  • Income tax, CPP and EI withheld and remitted on your assigned CRA schedule
  • General holiday pay calculated on the Alberta 4.2% basis, including an optional-holiday policy
  • Vacation pay accrued and tracked as a liability
  • WCB-Alberta registration support and assessable earnings reporting
  • Records of employment from pay-period records, including layoff batches
  • T4 and T4A slips and summaries filed by the last day of February

Remote, with no Red Deer office

EverStone is a fully virtual, sole practitioner CPA firm. There is no Red Deer office and no office visits. Red Deer employers are served by email, secure document exchange and e-signature, with video calls when they help. Payroll travels well online, because the inputs are hours and rates and the outputs are pay stubs, remittances and slips. One accountant holds the file from the first remittance to the February T4s. The deduction calculator is there if you want to check a single cheque yourself.

Who this suits, and who it does not

This is for a Red Deer employer with a core staff of a few people to a few dozen: a clinic, a shop, a restaurant, a trades company or a fabrication business whose crew changes with the work. You want holiday pay worked on Alberta’s formula, remittances on time, ROEs produced quickly and T4s that match the ledger. A large unionized workforce on shift-scheduling software needs a dedicated payroll platform instead, and we will say so in our first reply.

Project payrolls swing with contract timing, so the remittances belong in a forecast of the cash they need.

Common questions

Red Deer payroll questions

Does Alberta charge an employer health tax?+
No. A Red Deer employer’s statutory employment costs are CPP and EI on both sides plus WCB-Alberta premiums, with nothing provincial charged on the wage bill itself. Ask about your case → See the published fees.
How is general holiday pay calculated in Alberta?+
At least 4.2% of the wages, vacation pay and general holiday pay earned in the four weeks immediately before the general holiday. The base includes vacation pay and earlier general holiday pay, not just regular wages.
How many general holidays does Alberta have?+
Nine, with four additional optional days an employer may choose to recognize. Because the optional days are elective, they should be set out in a written policy so employees and payroll both know in advance which list applies.
We lay off a crew at the end of each project. Can you handle the ROEs?+
Yes. Records of employment are produced from the pay-period records we already keep, so a layoff batch is a matter of confirming last days worked and reasons, not reconstructing hours. The cleaner the pay records, the faster this goes.
Who administers workers’ compensation in Alberta?+
WCB-Alberta. Premiums are set by industry classification and charged on assessable earnings, and registration is separate from your CRA payroll account. The reporting draws on the same wage data but goes to a different body.
Does EverStone have a Red Deer office?+
No. The firm is fully virtual and serves Red Deer employers by email, secure file exchange and e-signature. Nothing in a payroll engagement requires an office visit.
Do you work with employers outside Red Deer itself?+
Yes. Employers in Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Innisfail, Penhold and Red Deer County are set up the same way, on the same Alberta rules and the same fixed monthly fee.
