Accountant for Selkirk manufacturers and fabricators
Selkirk’s steel industry is part of the city’s economy, and alongside it are fabrication, machining, welding and metal-supply businesses, along with other small manufacturers in the city’s industrial areas. Shops that make things share accounting problems a service business never sees — stock in three stages at once, jobs that need costing, and machinery that drives the tax bill.
EverStone is a CPA firm serving Selkirk businesses online, at fixed fees agreed before work begins.
Quick answer: A Selkirk manufacturer’s year-end turns on inventory valued properly across raw materials, work in progress and finished goods, machinery claimed in the right CCA class at the right time, RST exemptions documented on qualifying equipment, and SR&ED claimed where process work qualifies. For a Selkirk shop, published fees start at $300 a month for bookkeeping and $100 for a personal return.
For a one-owner Selkirk manufacturer, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements usually cost from $450 to $650 a month all-in. The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.
Fabricators that also do installation work share questions with Selkirk contractors.
What Selkirk shops have in common
The City of Selkirk highlights its access to major highways, rail spur lines and the airport, and its expanding industrial areas; its own statements about the local economy single out the steel industry and the people who work in it. The manufacturers we see from the area are mostly small and owner-managed: a fabrication shop doing custom work, a machine shop supplying parts, a welding business that also does field repairs, a small plant producing a product line. They differ in scale, but the year-end questions are the same: what is the stock worth, which jobs made money, and how should the equipment be claimed.
Inventory in three stages at once
At any year-end a shop holds raw materials, partly finished jobs and finished goods waiting to ship. Each has to be counted and valued, and work in progress is where most of the judgement lies: materials already issued, labour already spent, and a fair share of overhead. Absorbing fixed overhead on normal capacity, rather than on an unusually slow or busy year, keeps unit cost stable. Get the valuation wrong and profit moves between years, which moves tax with it. We set up a costing method you can repeat every month and a count procedure the floor supervisor can run without stopping production for long. The year-end inventory count guide explains what the count must support.
Job costing that shows which work pays
Many Selkirk shops quote custom work, and a quote is only as good as the last job’s actual cost. That needs labour hours booked to jobs, materials issued to jobs, and machine time charged at a rate that reflects what the equipment really costs to run. Without it, the busiest customer can quietly be the least profitable. Once the data exists, a monthly report shows margin by job, by customer and by product line. That is the report owners use to reprice, and the one a banker asks about when you apply for an operating line.
Machinery, CCA and the timing of a purchase
Production machinery is recovered through capital cost allowance, and manufacturing and processing equipment has its own accelerated class. The claim starts when the machine is available for use, not when it is ordered or paid for, so a line installed after year-end waits a year. Selling a replaced machine can bring earlier claims back as recapture. Buildings used for manufacturing have their own rules; see the update on manufacturing buildings. CCA classes in Canada lists the classes.
RST on machinery, and Manitoba’s own credit
Manitoba adds two provincial layers to an equipment purchase. Qualifying machinery used in manufacturing can be exempt from the 7% RST when the conditions are met, and Manitoba offers its own manufacturing investment credit on eligible equipment. Both depend on documentation at the time of purchase, so talk to us before the order, not after installation. The other RST trap is the reverse: shop supplies, tooling and parts ordered from out of province without RST need self-assessing, and nothing on the invoice says so.
Where product goes
Goods shipped to customers in other provinces carry GST or HST by destination rather than Manitoba RST, and goods exported outside Canada are generally zero-rated, provided you keep proof of export. A Selkirk shop that sells across the Prairies or into the United States needs its billing set up by destination, with proof of delivery kept for every out-of-province shipment. GST/HST on exports and non-residents covers the rules.
SR&ED on the shop floor
SR&ED is not only for software. A shop that tries to solve a real technical problem — a new welding process for a difficult material, a fixture that had to be redesigned and tested several times before it worked — may have qualifying work. The claim goes on Form T661 with the T2, and a Canadian-controlled private corporation can earn an enhanced refundable credit. Manitoba has its own research and development credit on top. Government grants and assistance for the same project reduce the eligible base, and routine trouble-shooting or quality control does not qualify. The records that win the claim are engineering notes and trial results kept at the time, tied to the hours of the staff involved.
Payroll, the levy and WCB Manitoba
A growing shop floor brings shift premiums, overtime and a steady flow of hires and departures. Source deductions are remitted on the CRA’s schedule, T4s are due by the last day of February, and WCB Manitoba premiums are based on assessable payroll. Manitoba general holiday pay is 5% of the previous four weeks’ earnings, with premium pay added where the holiday is worked. The Health and Post Secondary Education Tax Levy applies only once total yearly payroll passes $2.5 million, and associated companies share that exemption. Payroll services in Selkirk covers the mechanics.
