Personal tax accountant in Selkirk, Manitoba
For a Selkirk business owner the personal return is where the corporate decisions land: the salary or dividends you took, the business income on a T2125, a rental, an RRSP contribution. EverStone prepares T1 returns online and keeps them consistent with the business file. See personal tax services and the Selkirk CPA page.
Quick answer: A Selkirk resident files a federal T1 with a Manitoba provincial schedule that carries its own rates and credits. Owners who draw from a corporation, the self-employed and anyone with rental or investment income benefit most from a CPA who sees the whole picture. EverStone prepares the return online. A basic T1 starts at $100.
Personal tax returns for Selkirk residents start from $100 per return; a self-employed return is commonly $250 to $450. A personal return covers the T1 with slips such as the T4 and T5, RRSP and TFSA room, rental income on the T776 and business income on the T2125.
Whose return this page is about
Plenty of Selkirk households have one T4 and nothing else, and free software handles that well — we will tell you so. This page is for the other returns. The owner of an incorporated contractor or shop who takes a mix of salary and dividends. A self-employed tradesperson or home-based business owner in St. Andrews or St. Clements reporting business income on form T2125. A couple with a rental suite, a farm property or investments. Someone who commutes to a job in Winnipeg and runs a side business in the evenings. Each of those returns depends on records the CRA does not have, and each has choices that change the result.
The provincial schedule is its own calculation
Every resident computes federal tax under one set of rules and provincial tax under another. Manitoba maintains its own list of non-refundable credits and its own rates, applied to a taxable income figure that is largely federally determined. A claim can be worth a different amount provincially than federally, and some amounts exist in one calculation but not the other. Copying the federal figures across and assuming the provincial side follows is how genuine entitlements go unclaimed. We work the Manitoba schedule as a separate document, every year.
Credits tied to housing, not just income
Manitoba is distinctive in offering personal credits connected to residential property costs, available to homeowners and to tenants under defined conditions. Because they attach to housing rather than to income alone, they can reach a household whose income figure suggests nothing is available, and they are frequently missed for that reason. With much of the recent growth in Selkirk coming as new homes, apartments and condos, it is worth confirming each year which of these apply to your household. They also interact with a home-based business: where part of a home’s costs is claimed against business income, the claims have to be consistent rather than both taking the full amount.
Self-employed: the T2125 and what it needs
A sole proprietor reports business income and expenses on form T2125 inside the T1. The figures should come from books that reconcile to the bank, not from a year-end tally. The questions that matter most are usually vehicle use (a log that supports the business percentage), the home office (the share of the home genuinely used for the business), equipment (claimed through CCA rather than expensed) and GST: once taxable sales pass the small-supplier threshold you need a GST registration, and in Manitoba an RST registration may be needed as well. Self-employed individuals file by June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30, so interest runs from the earlier date.
Owners who draw from a corporation
An incorporated owner has a lever employees do not: the amount and form of personal income. Salary arrives on a T4, builds RRSP room and attracts CPP. Dividends arrive on a T5 and are grossed up and credited on the T1. Where a household’s provincial entitlements include income-tested or refundable amounts, drawing more can reduce them, and drawing less can preserve them at the cost of leaving income inside the company. Neither answer is right every year. What does not work is setting the draw in December and discovering the personal consequences in April. We prepare the personal and corporate returns on the same file so the two are decided together. Salary versus dividends sets out the comparison.
Instalments, RRSPs and the next year
Where your net tax owing passes the CRA threshold in the current year and either of the two previous years, the CRA will expect instalments. Self-employed people and owners paid by dividends meet that test far more often than employees, because nothing is withheld at source. We tell you whether instalments apply, what the CRA reminders will ask for, and whether a lower amount based on this year’s actual income is safer. RRSP room, TFSA room and any carry-forwards are recorded on the file so next year starts from the right place.
The rest of the return is national
Everything outside the provincial schedule — how a dividend is grossed up, how a capital gain is included, how a shareholder loan is treated, how rental income is reported on the T776 — is federal legislation, identical for a Selkirk resident and anyone else in Canada. That is why a CPA who is not in Selkirk can prepare a Selkirk return properly: the national part does not vary, and the Manitoba part is a defined schedule worked through on its own terms. See accounting for Manitoba businesses and the Manitoba tax facts page.

Who this is for, and who it is not
This suits a Selkirk resident whose return involves more than wages: a corporation, self-employment, a home-based business, rental or investment income, or a year with a move or a sale. One T4 and nothing else is well served by free software, and we will recommend that. Other returns are priced from the published fixed fees.
What happens when you get in touch
Selkirk returns are prepared online in three steps, with the fee agreed before any work.
- An email enquiry. Tell us about your income, your household and anything the CRA has written to you about. The fee is then set out in writing.
- Slips pulled from the CRA. Our authorization with the CRA lets us collect the slips reported under your SIN. You upload property tax, rent and business records, which the CRA does not receive.
- Explained, then filed. We review the return with you before filing and note what could be done differently next year.
