A Fixed-Fee CPA Serving Barrie and Simcoe County Businesses
EverStone CPA is a Chartered Professional Accountant firm based in Abbotsford, British Columbia, working with owner-run businesses in Barrie, Innisfil, Orillia, Bradford and the rest of Simcoe County. Corporate tax, bookkeeping, payroll and plain answers, delivered by video, phone and a secure upload link, at a fee fixed in writing before we start.
Who we help here: Builders and trades riding the region’s housing growth, small manufacturers and fabricators, restaurants and tourism operators working around the lake and ski seasons, carriers running the Highway 400 corridor, and independent retailers.
Nearby, EverStone also serves Oshawa.
Quick answer: Barrie businesses file the same federal returns as anyone in Canada, plus an Ontario layer: 13% HST, employer health tax once payroll is large enough, WSIB, and an annual return through the Ontario Business Registry. EverStone handles all of it remotely, with one CPA on the file and a fixed fee agreed before any work begins. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

What a Barrie file actually looks like
Barrie sits on Kempenfelt Bay at the western end of Lake Simcoe, where Highway 400 meets the road north into cottage country. That position shapes the businesses here more than any statistic could. A good share of the local economy is building the houses and roads for people who moved up from the GTA. Another share feeds, houses and entertains visitors who come for the lake in summer and the hills in winter. A third moves freight up and down the 400. Each of those has an accounting rhythm of its own, and the Ontario rules sit on top of all of them.
What they have in common is a shape: income that bunches into a season or a set of jobs, and costs that run all year. The owner is on a site, a floor or a highway rather than at a desk. The accounting has to fit around that, which is why everything here runs remotely and on a calendar set at the start of the year.
The same is true a short drive out. A builder in Innisfil, a marina or restaurant in Orillia, a produce or trucking operation near Bradford: each deals with the same Ontario rules and the same federal deadlines. None of them is better served by an accountant because the accountant is close by. What helps is someone who answers, who knows which filing is next, and who has seen the seasonal pattern before.
The Ontario layer on top of the federal returns
Ontario harmonised its sales tax with the GST, so a Barrie business charges a single 13% HST and files one return with the CRA. The provincial part is recoverable as an input tax credit, the same as the federal part. Ontario corporate income tax is calculated on the federal T2, so there is no separate provincial corporate return to file.
Three things are provincial and separate. Employer health tax applies once total Ontario payroll passes the $1,000,000 exemption. WSIB coverage is compulsory for most construction work and many other industries. And every Ontario corporation files an annual return through the Ontario Business Registry within six months of its year-end. The current figures sit on the Ontario tax facts page, with the source named under each one.
Accounting and tax services for Barrie businesses
Most owners start with one of these and add the rest as the business grows:
- Bookkeeping in Barrie — monthly reconciliation and the HST return, from $300 a month.
- Corporate tax for Barrie corporations — the T2, statements and the registry return, quoted after a free consultation.
- Personal tax in Barrie — T1 returns from $100, with self-employed returns commonly $250–$450.
- Payroll for Barrie employers — source deductions, T4s, WSIB and employer health tax.
A trades corporation that wants bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually lands at $450–$650 a month. Every fee is on the pricing page, and nothing starts until the number is in writing.
Barrie industries we work with most
The five industries below each have a dedicated page, because the accounting that matters differs from one to the next.
- Construction contractors: T5018 slips, the Construction Act 10% holdback, progress billing and WSIB clearances.
- Manufacturers and fabricators: inventory, job costing, capital cost allowance and SR&ED on process work.
- Restaurants and tourism: tips, point-of-sale reconciliation and a year split between summer and ski season.
- Trucking and owner-operators: IFTA, IRP, equipment classes and long-haul meal claims.
- Retailers: counts, shrinkage and the cottage-season peak.
When to incorporate, and what the corporation protects
Many Barrie trades and service owners start as sole proprietors and incorporate once profit outgrows what they spend personally. The reason is the small-business rate on active business income up to the $500,000 business limit: income left in the company is taxed lightly until it is paid out. That only helps if money genuinely stays in the corporation. An owner who draws every dollar out each year gains little and pays for a second set of filings. We run the numbers on your actual year before recommending it, and should I incorporate sets out the questions.
Once incorporated, the traps are practical. Personal spending on the company card becomes a shareholder loan, and a loan not repaid within one year after the corporation’s year-end is generally taxed as your income. How you pay yourself, salary or dividends, changes both returns, so it is decided before the year closes.
Getting started from anywhere in Simcoe County
You book a free consultation, we talk through what the business does and what has been filed, and you get a fixed fee in writing. If you already have an accountant, the switch happens in the background. We are authorised with the CRA so balances and notices are looked up rather than requested, and the next twelve months of deadlines go in the calendar. A one-off problem can go to a 45-minute Advice Call for $200 + GST instead.

Remote accounting from Abbotsford
The firm operates from 32615 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford and serves Barrie remotely. There is no Barrie office and no staff based there. Everything runs by video call, phone and a secure upload link, and you authorise us through your CRA My Business Account rather than signing forms in the mail. HST, the T2 and payroll are all filed electronically to the same place they always were, so nothing about the work depends on being nearby. See working with a CPA outside your province.
